Book excerpt: This publication describes the characteristics of the electrical grid system that are required for the connection and successful operation of a nuclear power plant, as well as the characteristics of a nuclear power plant that are significant for the design and operation of the electrical grid system. It addresses the issues to be considered when a nuclear power plant is being planned and describes the information exchange necessary between the developer of a nuclear power plant and the organization responsible for the electrical grid. The particular issue of a large nuclear unit connected with a small system is also discussed. A new topic introduced in this publication is the need for cyber security of the grid system near the nuclear power plant. Several case studies of Member States experience in developing new nuclear units and about grid events during operation are included.

Book excerpt: Electricity, supplied reliably and affordably, is foundational to the U.S. economy and is utterly indispensable to modern society. However, emissions resulting from many forms of electricity generation create environmental risks that could have significant negative economic, security, and human health consequences. Large-scale installation of cleaner power generation has been generally hampered because greener technologies are more expensive than the technologies that currently produce most of our power. Rather than trade affordability and reliability for low emissions, is there a way to balance all three? The Power of Change: Innovation for Development and Deployment of Increasingly Clean Energy Technologies considers how to speed up innovations that would dramatically improve the performance and lower the cost of currently available technologies while also developing new advanced cleaner energy technologies. According to this report, there is an opportunity for the United States to continue to lead in the pursuit of increasingly clean, more efficient electricity through innovation in advanced technologies. The Power of Change: Innovation for Development and Deployment of Increasingly Clean Energy Technologies makes the case that America's advantagesâ€"world-class universities and national laboratories, a vibrant private sector, and innovative states, cities, and regions that are free to experiment with a variety of public policy approachesâ€"position the United States to create and lead a new clean energy revolution. This study focuses on five paths to accelerate the market adoption of increasing clean energy and efficiency technologies: (1) expanding the portfolio of cleaner energy technology options; (2) leveraging the advantages of energy efficiency; (3) facilitating the development of increasing clean technologies, including renewables, nuclear, and cleaner fossil; (4) improving the existing technologies, systems, and infrastructure; and (5) leveling the playing field for cleaner energy technologies. The Power of Change: Innovation for Development and Deployment of Increasingly Clean Energy Technologies is a call for leadership to transform the United States energy sector in order to both mitigate the risks of greenhouse gas and other pollutants and to spur future economic growth. This study's focus on science, technology, and economic policy makes it a valuable resource to guide support that produces innovation to meet energy challenges now and for the future.

Book excerpt: This open access book discusses the eroding economics of nuclear power for electricity generation as well as technical, legal, and political acceptance issues. The use of nuclear power for electricity generation is still a heavily disputed issue. Aside from technical risks, safety issues, and the unsolved problem of nuclear waste disposal, the economic performance is currently a major barrier. In recent years, the costs have skyrocketed especially in the European countries and North America. At the same time, the costs of alternatives such as photovoltaics and wind power have significantly decreased.

It effectively exposes the students to the basics of power generation involved in several energy conversion systems so that they gain comprehensive knowledge of the operation of various types of power plants in use today. After a brief introduction to energy fundamentals including the environmental impacts of power generation, the book acquaints the students with the working principles, design and operation of five conventional power plant systems, namely thermal, nuclear, hydroelectric, diesel and gas turbine. The economic factors of power generation with regard to estimation and prediction of load, plant design, plant operation, tariffs and so on, are discussed and illustrated with the help of several solved numerical problems. The generation of electric power using renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, biomass, geothermal, tidal, fuel cells, magneto hydrodynamic, thermoelectric and thermionic systems, is discussed elaborately. The book is interspersed with solved problems for a sound understanding of the various aspects of power plant engineering. The chapter-end questions are intended to provide the students with a thorough reinforcement of the concepts discussed.

Book excerpt: This report addresses the increasingly important interactions of variable renewables and dispatchable energy technologies, such as nuclear power, in terms of their effects on electricity systems. These effects add costs to the production of electricity, which are not usually transparent. The report recommends that decision-makers should take into account such system costs and internalise them according to a "generator pays" principle, which is currently not the case. Analysing data from six OECD/NEA countries, the study finds that including the system costs of variable renewables at the level of the electricity grid increases the total costs of electricity supply by up to one-third, depending on technology, country and penetration levels. In addition, it concludes that, unless the current market subsidies for renewables are altered, dispatchable technologies will increasingly not be replaced as they reach their end of life and consequently security of supply will suffer. This implies that significant changes in management and cost allocation will be needed to generate the flexibility required for an economically viable coexistence of nuclear energy and renewables in increasingly decarbonised electricity systems.
