Book excerpt: As engineering materials and structures often contain a metal or metallic alloy bonded to a ceramic, the resultant interface must be able to sustain mechanical forces without failure. They also play an important role in oxidation or reduction of materials. The workshop on 'Bonding, Structure and Mechanical Properties of Metal/Ceramic Interfaces' was held in January 1989 within the Acta/Scripta Metallurgica conference series. It drew together an international collection of 70 scientists who discussed a wide range of issues related to metal-ceramic interfaces. The sessions were divided into 7 categories: structure and bonding, chemistry at interfaces, formation of interfaces, structure of interfaces, thermodynamics/atomistics of interface fracture, mechanics of interface cracks, and fracture resistance of bimaterial interfaces. Within these headings attention was paid to grain boundaries, the influence of chemical processes on the behaviour of interfaces, diffusion bonding, characterization of fracture, and crack propagation by fatigue and by stress corrosion. The book presents a useful reference source for materials scientists, physicists, chemists, and mechanical engineers who are concerned with the roles and properties of interfaces.

Book excerpt: A new double cantilever beam specimen with a chevron notch (short bar) has been developed to measure the fracture toughness, (or resistance), GIc, of ceramicmetal interfaces. The analysis of the specimen is based on previously developed compliance calibrations for homogeneous materials. Toughness measurements on a zinc-silicate glass ceramic-molybdenum system demonstrated that the bond at this interface is as tough (13 J/m2) as the glass ceramic alone. Measurements on a lithium silicate glass ceramic-Hastelloy 276 metal system showed that the toughness of the interface depends on the degree of bonding ranging from 19 J/m2 for weak bonding to 54 J/m2 for strong bonding. This specimen is being suggested for use in the study of the effect of heat treatment and bonding chemistry on fracture of metal-ceramic interfaces.

Book excerpt: The 17th University Conference on Ceramics, which also was the 7th LBL/MMRD International Materials Symposium, was held on the campus of the University of California at Berkeley from July 28 to August 1, 1980. It was devoted to the subject of surfaces and interfaces in ceramic and ceramic-metal systems. The program was timely and of great interest, as indicated by the large number of contributed papers, which included contributions from ten foreign countries. These proceedings are divided into the following categories dealing with the chemistry and physics of interfaces: calculations of interface/surface states, characterization of surfaces and inter faces, thermodynamics of interfaces, influence of surface and inter faces on selected ceramic processes, grain boundary structures, effects of grain boundaries on deformation and fracture, interfacial phenomena, formation of interfaces, development of adhesion, and reactions at interfaces. A number of papers deal specifically with the Si-Si02 interface, which probably has received more attention than any other because of its importance in the electronics industry. This coverage fulfills the principal objective of the symposium which was to explore and assess the current fundamental understand ing of interfaces and surfaces. A parallel objective of the symposium was fulfilled by a group of papers dealing with the correlation of interfacial characteris tics with mechanical behavior. This group includes papers dealing with the adherence of dissimilar materials at interfaces.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interface fracture resistance measurements have been conducted on metal/ceramic interfaces with and without reaction products. Both ductile and brittle interface fracture have been documented. Some effects of residual stress have also been investigated. The influence of thermal expansion misfit on the mechanical behavior of metal/ceramic bonded systems has been shown to be strongly governed by the sign of the misfit strain, its magnitude, the yield strength of the metal and to be subject to substantial geometric effects. In some cases, the misfit causes interface failure, while in other, cracking occurs in the ceramic. Generally, misfit has detrimental effects on bond strength, but in special cases, the bond strength can actually be improved. Reaction products exhibit a wide variety of fracture behaviors. In some cases, the reaction products are brittle and subject to residual stress, leading to low fracture energy interfaces governed by the fracture resistance of the reaction product. In other cases ductile reaction products occur, resulting in good bond properties and fracture energies that increase as the reaction product layer thickness increases. Stress corrosion has been found to occur at oxide/metal interfaces, leading to substantial reductions in the fracture resistance. The phenomenon is governed by water vapor and is similar to, but more pronounced than, that found in oxides.

Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and disseminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS)* at Purdue University in 1957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dis semination phases of the activity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the though that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all concerned if the printing and distribution of the volumes were handled by an international publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemi nation. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Corporation of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 37 (thesis year 1992) a total of 12,549 thesis titles from 25 Canadian and 153 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for these titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this impor tant annual reference work. While Volume 37 reports theses submitted in 1992, on occasion, certain uni versities do report theses submitted in previous years but not reported at the time.

Book excerpt: Fracture toughness tests of several ceramic materials were carried out according to the various test methods, that is the Bridge indentation(BI, SEPB), Fatigue precrack(FP), Controlled surface flaw(CSF), Chevron notch(CN) and Indentation fracture(IF) methods. Mutual comparison of the test results was made to discuss the validity and applicability of the each test method. Significance of the apparent fracture toughness with stable crack growth was discussed. The intrinsic fracture toughness can be obtained by the CSF method, in which a small surface crack is used. At high temperatures, since nonlinear deformation due to softening of glass phase and stable crack growth occur, nonlinear fracture mechanics approach should be applied. JIC-value is successfully evaluated according to the R-curve method.

Book excerpt: This report describes new and significant results that can be applied in the microstructure design for optimum mechanical performance of metal-ceramic composites and laminates. There are three elements to these recommendations: (1) the design of the atomic structure of metal-ceramic interfaces, (2) identification of the critical length scale in the two phase microstructure, and (3) prediction of the microstructural conditions under which the thermal conductivity of the composite becomes significantly influenced by the thermal boundary resistance of interfaces. In the first topic we show that the beneficial effect of titanium interlayers at a copper/alumina interface is accomplished with only about one monolayer; with further increase in the titanium interlayer thickness having an insignificant effect on the interfacial strength. In the second topic we show that the metal ligament size is the key microstructural parameter in controlling the flow stress, the fracture stress and the fracture toughness of metal-ceramic composites. The metal ligament size is important because dislocation activity in the metal, which produces pile ups against the interface, is the critical event in flow and fracture of composites. In the third area we show that the interfacial thermal boundary resistance plays a dominant role in the overall thermal conductivity of the composite when the microstructural scale becomes smaller than about 1um.

Book excerpt: Composite properties are closely related to the strength of the interface between the matrix and reinforcement. There is need for a fundamental level of understanding of the strength characteristics and the origin of failure of the interface since it is the means by which load is transferred from the matrix to reinforcement. Extended from our previous phase of this study of the interface between ductile and brittle phases under mode II loading, 4 an offset shear geometry was chosen to investigate the strength and fracture behavior of a copper/alumina sandwich. This particular geometry has advantages since it is simple to fabricate and can provide mixed mode information about strength. In this phase of the study, an attempt has been made to characterize the shear debond strength of metal-ceramic interface by use of the offset shear specimen. Specimens with interface precrack geometries as well as those without precracks were tested to examine crack propagation and initiation effects. The goal is to characterize mechanisms of damage initiation at the interface prior to crack propagation using copper-alumina laminates loaded in compression. During each test, crack initiation information was obtained from critical stress to initiate fracture, and propagation information was determined from the energy requirement for subsequent crack propagation.
