Book excerpt: "Post-fire restoration of degraded sagebrush ecosystems over large areas of the Great Basin is challenging, in part due to unpredictable outcomes. Low rates of restoration success are attributed to increasing frequencies of wildfires, biological invasions, and climate variability. Quantifying restoration outcomes by accounting for sources of biotic and abiotic variability will improve restoration as a predictive science. One source of biotic variability is neighbor interactions, which can regulate demographic parameters of coexisting species and are an important determinant of community structure, ecosystem functions, and population dynamics. Our objective was to quantify how intraspecific variability in big sagebrush, Artemisia tridentata, including three subspecies and two ploidy levels, is related to subspecies' reaction to conspecific neighbor presence. Neighbor interactions can alter population growth rate via competition or facilitation depending on specific environmental conditions. Using a long-term common garden experiment, we developed spatially-explicit hierarchical models to quantify the effects of size-structured crowding on plant growth and survival. We found that neighbor interactions can vary significantly over time and space, and tend to be more pronounced under wetter and cooler climate conditions. We further tested if water availability, one of the major limiting factors in arid ecosystems, can underlie competitive interactions in a common garden, including density dependence. We used a deuterium-tracer experiment to quantify belowground zone of influence and crowding effect on plant water uptake. The results suggest that intraspecific variability in lateral root extent may be linked to subspecies identity and ploidy level. We did not find strong evidence that neighbor presence and size can alter water uptake from a shallow soil horizon, potentially suggesting size-independent partitioning of water resources between neighboring plants. We further hypothesize that variability in root architecture may reflect an axis for ecohydrological niche segregation contributing to the process of plant coexistence and evolution in heterogeneous landscapes. Our study complements previous knowledge of belowground processes in big sagebrush populations, including patterns of resource acquisition, and indicates promising avenues for further research of the ecology and evolution of this species. The results highlight how local plant-plant interactions can be a source of variation in common garden experiments, which are used to evaluate adaptive capacity and seed transfer zone development for A. tridentata populations. The steppe provides critical habitat and forage for wildlife and is economically important to recreation and livestock industries. However, the ecosystem is threatened primarily due to several negative effects associated with expansion of the exotic annual grass Bromus tectorum (cheatgrass). Because of these changes rehabilitation of the habitat is extremely difficult and energy intensive. Restoration of one of the foundation species, Artemisia tridentata (big sagebrush), is a function of seed availability, seed germination, seedling establishment and mature plant survival. Many studies have addressed various aspects of A. tridentata seed germination and mature plant ecophysiology, but gaps in our knowledge include seed bank dynamics and biotic interactions that may hinder seedling survival. The prevalence of large fires in B. tectorum-invaded habitat limits availability of dispersed seeds in the interior of burned areas, leaving pre-existing viable seeds in the soil seed bank as the primary natural seed source. I investigated seed longevity of two A. tridentata subspecies over a 2-year period by retrieving seed bags that were placed at varying depths and sampling soil and litter fractions of the existing seed bank across six locations in the Great Basin. Artemisia tridentata ssp. wyomingensis and A. t. ssp. vaseyana exhibited patterns of a steadily decreasing abundance of viable seeds on the surface and beneath litter, with 100% loss of surface seed viability in 24 months. However, 29-36% (A. t. ssp. wyomingensis) and 30-40% (A. t. ssp. vaseyana) of buried seeds remained viable throughout the duration of the experiment. Abundance of naturally occurring seeds varied considerably among locations and between years across the Great Basin for both subspecies. Loss of viable seeds from the existing seed bank between post-dispersal and pre-dispersal the following season was higher in magnitude for A. t. ssp. wyomingensis soil fractions compared to litter fractions, and higher overall than for A. t. ssp. vaseyana. Access to resources is critical during early spring when resources are plentiful, and this access affects the probability of survival through the summer drought period. Artemisia tridentata resource acquisition may be adversely affected during this time via root interaction mechanisms that are not mediated through resources (interference competition). I examined whether and how root interactions affected growth of A. t. ssp. wyomingensis by forcing its roots to interact with roots of conspecifics, B. tectorum, Elymus wawawaiensis (Snake River wheatgrass), and Agropyron xhybrid (cultivar 'Hycrest'). Activated carbon was used to counteract any potentially negative effects of root exudates. Book excerpt: "The loss of big sagebrush (Artemisia tridentata) throughout the Great Basin Desert has motivated efforts to restore it because of fire and other disturbance effects on sagebrush-dependent wildlife and ecosystem function. Initial establishment is the first challenge to restoration, and appropriateness of seeds, climate, and weather variability are factors that may explain success or difficulties in big sagebrush restoration efforts. This project provided several ways of assessing climate responses of big sagebrush seedlings during the critical establishment phase post-fire. We evaluated eleven different seed sources of big sagebrush from all three subspecies, dissimilar climates-of-origin, and different ploidy levels to assess how subspecies, cytotype, and climate-of-origin affect initial establishment of sagebrush in a common garden study. We assessed ecophysiological-climate adaptation as it relates to seedling performance using a suite of dependent variables, including: survival, growth, water balance, photosynthesis, and threshold freezing responses. Results indicate the importance of minimum temperatures to seedling establishment, and reveal a gradient of physiological responses to freezing that inform big sagebrush adaptation and functional diversity. We then used in-situ experimental warming to isolate minimum temperatures, and test the effects of warming on seedling physiological performance for the three dominant subspecies of big sagebrush: A.t. tridentata, A.t. vaseyana, and A.t. wyomingensis. Experimental warming further supported our minimum temperature hypothesis, indicating that warming may alter seedling freezing response thereby affect growth and survival. In a third experiment, we evaluated how initial establishment of big sagebrush is influenced by management treatments on the herb layer, as post-fire rehabilitation frequently involves alterations of the plant community and soil. Results suggest that drill seeding combined with land management treatments that cause disturbance of the herb layer and soil surface may negatively affect sagebrush during the establishment phase. Also, seedlings from local seed or faster-growing populations had greater survival than seedlings from climates that differed from the experimental site. In summary, we provide experimental evidence for the importance of minimum temperatures and seed sources to big sagebrush ecology and management of sagebrush systems. As the climate warms, selection for population-specific freezing resistance mechanisms may alter subspecies distributions. Our data indicated that warming could increase relative abundance of A.t. tridentata compared to A.t. wyomingensis at our Birds of Prey National Conservation Areas study site on the lower Snake River plain. The underlying mechanism for this is greater stress overcome by changes in resource allocation from freezing protection to growth, as well as an extraction of deeper soil water resources in A.t. tridentata. Mortality of A.t. vaseyana appeared to relate to drought stress and greater vulnerability to minimum temperature exposure. Understanding differences in big sagebrush populations' ability to compete with different types and abundances of herbs as well as variation in freezing resistance mechanisms will contribute to appropriate seed selection for particular restoration sites. Book excerpt: In the growing season of 2003, patterns of establishment of Artemisia tridentata ssp. vaseyana were observed after fire in a sagebrush steppe ecosystem in southeastern Idaho. It was examined how A. t. vaseyana seedling establishment was affected by neighboring vegetation and how these effects were modulated by 1) identity (functional group) and proximity of neighboring vegetation, 2) time since burning, and 3) water availability. Manipulative experiments were conducted to further isolate how identity and water affect competitive interactions between seedlings and neighbors and so that the causal relationships between herbs and seedlings could be better substantiated. Patterns of establishment for A. t. vaseyana were detected in addition to interactions between A. t. vaseyana and neighboring herbs that appeared to be modulated by water. Therefore, in the growing season of 2004, it was observed how neighboring herbs and seasonal soil drying affected carbon assimilation and competitive responses of A. t. vaseyana seedlings. This research contributes to land management decisions in sagebrush steppe ecosystems.

Book excerpt: Big sagebrush (Artemisia tridentata Nutt.) plant communities are found in western North America and comprise a mix of shrubs, forbs, and grasses. Climate, topography, and soil water availability are important factors that shape big sagebrush stand structure and plant community composition; however, most studies have focused on understanding these relationships at sites in a small portion of the big sagebrush region. Our goal was to characterize detailed stand structure and plant composition patterns and identify environmental variables related to those patterns by sampling 15 sites distributed across the western United States. In each site, we characterized stand structure at the individual shrub level and at the site level. We quantified size distributions and assessed relationships among canopy volume, age, and height. We also characterized functional type cover and species composition and related those to climatic, topographic, and edaphic variables. Mean big sagebrush age ranged from 21 (±8) to 57 (±22) yr at individual sites, mean height ranged from 0.23 (±0.12) to 0.67 (±0.23) m, and mean canopy volume ranged from 0.03 (±0.04) to 0.62 (±0.51) m3. Bare ground and litter contributed the most cover (mean = 64%), followed by big sagebrush (mean = 39% of vascular plant cover). There was a negative relationship between big sagebrush cover and grass and forb cover. Species composition was related to both climate and elevation, likely because these variables influence water availability. Although our study was limited to 15 field sites, our detailed descriptions of widely distributed sites provide insight into the magnitude of variability in big sagebrush plant community structure.
