Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A quarter of a century has elapsed since Nils Lundberg published his thesis "Continuous Recording and Control of Ventricular Fluid Pressure In Neurosurgical Practice". This publication, more than any other, propelled continuous monitoring of intracranial pressure from the status of a research tool to become an integral part of neurosurgical intensive care, with wide application in the management of patients with head injuries, intracranial haemorrhage, brain tumours and disorders of the CSF circulation. At the same time, experimental studies by Langfitt and others stimulated investigations of the relationships between intracranial pressure and cerebral blood flow, intracranial pressure volume relationships and studies of the formation and absorption of CSF. By 1972, Mario Brock had realised the extent of the interest in intracranial pressure research and organised the First International Symposium on Intracranial Pressure in Hanover in that year. This was the start of a series of highly successful meetings, subsequently held in Lund (1974), Groningen (1976), Williamsburg (1979) and Tokyo (1982), the proceed ings of which have been published as a uniform series of books. In each of these volumes the up to date status of research and clinical application of intracranial pressure measurement has been presented in a concise yet comprehensive way. The present volume contains the proceedings of the Sixth International Intracranial Pressure Symposium that was held in Glasgow, Scottland, from June 9th to 13th, 1985.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) remains a significant source of death and permanent disability, contributing to nearly one-third of all injury related deaths in the United States and exacting a profound personal and economic toll. Despite the increased resources that have recently been brought to bear to improve our understanding of TBI, the development of new diagnostic and therapeutic approaches has been disappointingly slow. Translational Research in Traumatic Brain Injury attempts to integrate expertise from across specialties to address knowledge gaps in the field of TBI. Its chapters cover a wide scope of TBI research in five broad areas: Epidemiology Pathophysiology Diagnosis Current treatment strategies and sequelae Future therapies Specific topics discussed include the societal impact of TBI in both the civilian and military populations, neurobiology and molecular mechanisms of axonal and neuronal injury, biomarkers of traumatic brain injury and their relationship to pathology, neuroplasticity after TBI, neuroprotective and neurorestorative therapy, advanced neuroimaging of mild TBI, neurocognitive and psychiatric symptoms following mild TBI, sports-related TBI, epilepsy and PTSD following TBI, and more. The book integrates the perspectives of experts across disciplines to assist in the translation of new ideas to clinical practice and ultimately to improve the care of the brain injured patient.

Book excerpt: This volume contains the papers presented at the First International .ijm posium on Intracranial Pressure, held at the Neurosurgical Clinic of the Medizi nische Hochschule Hannover (Hannover Medical School), July 27 to 29, 1972. The texts submitted have been included in their original form whenever possible. The editors have made only minor corrections and rearrangements, since rapid publication was considered to be more important than homoge neity in style. The sessions of this book correspond to the sessions of the sym posium. At the end of each session the reader will find a summary of the topics presented and discussed, especially prepared by the chairman and co-chairman concerned. Three main aspects ofICP were dealt with at the Symposium: Methodology (Sessions 1 and 2), Pathophysiology (Sessions 3 to 6), and Clinical Aspects (Ses sions 7 to 10). Following the symposium a special round table was held on the major topics covered by the meeting. The participants of this round table discussed drafts prepared by T. W. LANGFITT, B. JENNETT and N. LUNDBERG. These contributions have also been included as special chapters at the end of this book, and are believed to reflect the current attitudes as to the topics discussed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The pioneering work by Pierre Janny and Nils Lundberg added a new tool to the investigative armamentarium of the neurosurgeon: continuous monitor ing of intracranial pressure (ICP). A small group of basic and clinical sci entists recognized the importance of this method and in 1972 an International Symposium was organized by Mario Brock in Hannover, Germany. The workers "of the first hour" had high expectations and thought that the problem of intracranial hypertension could finally be dealt with. The Symposium con tinued to grow during subsequent meetings in Lund (1974), Groningen (1976) and Williamsburg (1979). However, the advent of the modern imaging tech niques of CT and MRI have dramatically changed the scene in clinical neurology and neurosurgery. These new methods as well as other monitoring techniques have put ICP in its proper place as just one of the many aspects, albeit an important one, in the management of patients with intracranial space-occupying lesions. The symposia in Tokyo (1982), Glasgow (1985) and Ann Arbor (1988) confirmed the steady interest in ICP recording, both as a research tool and as a clinical method. and yielded many new developments in the field of ICP. This book comprises the proceedings of the Eighth International Symposium on Intracranial Pressure that was held in Rotterdam, The Netherlands, from June 16th to 20th, 1991.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the early days of neurosurgery the management of patients with intracranial hypertension has formed part of the day-to-day routine of the neurosurgeon. The introduction of modem techniques for the clinical monitoring of the intracranial pressure (ICP) meant a firmer basis for the diagnosis and treatment of these patients but it also started a new research boom in the pathophysiology of ICP, and its integration with the intracranial dynamics and metabolism of the brain. This development was clearly demonstrated at the first ICP symposium which was most successfully arranged in 1972 by Hermann Dietz and Mario Brock at the Medizinische Hochschule of Hannover. The widespread interest in ICP problems which was so obviously demonstrated during this meeting evoked the idea that further ICP symposia might be warranted. At a final conference the organizers and members of the advisory board agreed that a second ICP symposium should be arranged two years later, and suggested that it should be held in Lund. This volume contains the papers presented at the Second ICP Symposium held in Lund on June 17-19, 1974. A total of 132 papers were submitted. 102 were accepted and included in the abstract volume which was issued to all participants beforehand. The selection was made by the organizing committee in co-operation with the advisory board and the chairmen.

This book was released on 2016-08-22 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When the brain suffers an injury, the effects can be delayed and unpredictable. Cerebrospinal fluid can slowly build up, causing dangerously high levels of intracranial pressure (ICP), and the brain tissue can be displaced into adjacent compartments, resulting in cerebral herniation syndrome (CHS). Within the burgeoning field of neurocritical care, experts are just beginning to understand the nuanced, sometimes counterintuitive relationship between ICP and CHS. Written by leading researchers who also have extensive first-hand clinical experience treating brain injury patients, Cerebral Herniation Syndromes and Intracranial Hypertension provides an up-to-date guide to this complex aspect of neurocritical care. Drawing from expertise gained working in high-volume medical centers, the book’s contributors reveal that there is no universal metric for gauging acceptable levels of intracranial pressure. Instead, they demonstrate the best practices for offering patients individualized care, based on their specific conditions and manifest symptoms. Bringing together internationally-renowned neurocritical care experts from a variety of neurology, critical care, surgery, and neurosurgery disciplines, this volume takes a comprehensive look at a complicated issue. A concise, practical, and timely review, Cerebral Herniation Syndromes and Intracranial Hypertension offers vital information for all medical personnel concerned with improving neurocritical patient care.

The Symposium has continued to grow since it began in 1972, and this year it was comprised 121 oral and 46 poster presentations. This considerable number was chosen from the more than 216 abstracts that were received, which made the selection process very difficult. We would like to thank the Program Committee for their efforts. One hundred and fifty-one of the manuscripts are printed here. The classic papers, short communications, and the presentations for the poster sessions here appear together under their appropriate topic heading. There were eleven sessions which spanned the most basic scientific descriptions of ICP dynamics to the most recent clinical advances and debate. Also included are the seven special seminars given by the invited speakers. These spe cial seminars were an innovation at this symposium as a means of reviewing the major aspects and history and of projecting the future directions of this expanding field. The organizers wish to thank the Advisory Committee for their guidance and focus, and to express their appreciation to everyone who contributed to the success of this meeting - to the Chairmen and Co-chairmen, to all of the members and participants, and not least of all to our executive staff who worked behind the scenes. We also wish to acknowledge our gratitude to Springer-Verlag for their technical aid and for their prompt publication of this volume.

Book excerpt: There is no question that the topic of this meeting in Seeheim, Germany, on intracranial and intralabyrinthine fluids is pertinent. This was the first international meeting at which these two closely-related topics were addressed together. Combining the clinical and research aspects of fluid and pressure regulation in the intracranial and the intralabyrint hine compartments as well as discussions on the clinical implications of abnormal fluid pressure was an excellent idea. The presentations and discussions of both the clinicians and basic scientists who participated proved that the concept of having such a combined focused gathering was both original and relevant. The two topics of the meeting in Seeheim have much in common. Maintaining both the intracranial pressure (lCP) and the intralabyrinthine pressure within normal limits is important for the normal functions of both the central nervous system and the ear. The intracranial space and the intralabyrinthine space are closed compartments that communicate with each other in an intricate manner. Deviations from normal intracranial pressure result in specific symptoms and signs. Medical problems related to elevated intracranial pressure vary from subtle to severe. Accumulated knowledge indicates that there are adverse effects from even relatively small elevations in ICP. Elevations in ICP may cause injuries to the brain and the ear. Abnormal pressure in the ear may cause abnormal function and injury. Maintaining the intracranial pressure within normal limits depends on a normally functioning pressure regulation.
