Book excerpt: The Tenth International Conference on Intracellular Protein Catabolism was held in Tokyo Japan, October 30-November 3, 1994. under the auspices of the International Committee on Proteolysis (lCOP). ICOP meetings have been held biennially in the USA, Europe, and Japan in turn. The previous three ICOP meetings (7th to 9th) were held in Shimoda, Japan, in 1988. in WildbadKreuth, Germany, in 1990, and in Williamsburg. Virginia, in 1992. Previous meetings were held in resort areas, this was the first meeting held in a large city. Attendance has grown every year so that nearly 400 participants from 19 different countries attended the Tokyo meeting. At the meeting, novel and updated results on the structure-function. physiology, biology, and pathology of proteases and inhibitors were discussed, together with cellular aspects of proteolysis and protein turnover. Thirty-nine invited papers and eight selected posters were presented orally and 171 poster presentations were discussed. This book documents almost all of the lectures and some selected posters. Since the world of proteolysis and protein turnover is expanding very rapidly. far beyond our expectations, it is impossible to cover all the new aspects of this field. However, this book will give an idea of the current status, trends. and directions of the field, and information necessary to understand what is and will be important in this field. Further. the editors hope that the novel ideas, approaches. methodologies, and important findings described in this book will stimulate further study on proteolysis and protein turnover.

Until the genetic role of DNA was firmly established, many researchers suspected that proteins, rather than nucleic acids, could be carriers of heritable information. However, these models were completely forgotten with the triumphal march of the double helix and the development of a central dogma postulating that information flow occurs strictly from DNA, through RNA, to protein, making it seemingly impossible for the proteins to possess a coding potential. Proteins were downgraded to the role of simple perpetuators and executors of DNA orders. Taken together, data included in this book prove beyond a reasonable doubt that proteins and multiprotein complexes are able to control heritable traits, and that, at least in some examples, this control occurs in a template-like fashion, so that new structures strictly reproduce patterns of pre-existing structures that were not specifically coded in DNA. Thus, protein-based inheritance has left the area of speculation and has emerged as a new topic amenable to high-quality experimental analysis.

The first half of the conference was held on the campus of the University of Alberta, Edmonton, and the second half at the Overlander Lodge, Hinton. Two other conferences had the greatest impact upon the planning for this ASI. One was a NATO ASI held in Tomar, Portugal in September of 1979, entitled "Metal Ions in Biology". Among the organizers for that conference were Allen Hill and Antonio Xavier; we are happy to acknowledge their beneficial influence on our subsequent conference. The other most influential conference was one organized by Ralph Wilkins and Dennis Darnell entitled "Methods for Determining Metal Ion Environments in Proteins" which was held in Las Cruces, New Mexico, U.S.A., January 10-12, 1979.
