Book excerpt: Climate change is expected to increase the frequency and intensity of droughts and heatwaves in Europe, leading to effects on forest growth. This study aims at increasing the understanding on species-specific effects of climate factors on radial growth, which is necessary to assess the responses of tree radial growth to anticipated climate changes. We monitored radial growth response to climate fluctuation of four mature coniferous species ( Larix decidua and Abies alba) located at altitudes from 290 m a.s.l. to 377 m a.s.l., Zvolen valley, Central Slovakia. Based on continuous monitoring of stem radial variation of coniferous species using dendrometers within the growing season, daily changes in stem radial variation (u2206R) and extracted water deficit (u2206W), maximum daily shrinkage (MDS) and radial growth were extracted. Diurnal cycles were divided into the three phases of contraction, expansion and stem radius increment. We used Morlet wavelet analysis to assess the differences in cyclic radial stem variations between coniferous species. Stem radial variation and extracted variables (u2206W) were compared among coniferous species and the influences of environmental variables were evaluated by applying correlation analysis and moving correlation analysis (MCA). L. decidua showed more pronounced variability in seasonal course of stem radius variations than A. alba.

The reasons are: (1) financial pressures to obtain rapid returns on the forestry investment made possible by an earlier harvest; (2) enforced harvest of young plantations to maintain a continuing supply of cellulose for mills where wood shortages are experienced; (3) thinning young plantations, both because they were planted too densely initially and because thinning is done where long rotation quality trees are the forestry goal; (4) more intensive utilization is being done using tops and small diameter trees; and (5) there is interest in using young (juvenile) wood for special products because of its unique characteristics and the development of new technologies. The largest present-day source of conifer juvenile wood is from thinnings of plantations where millions of hectares of pine were planted too densely. Because of the better growth rate resulting from improved silviculture and good genetic stock, plantations will need to be thinned heavily. As a result of this trend, young wood makes up an increasingly larger proportion of the total conifer wood supply each year. Large amounts of juvenile wood from hard woods are also currently available, especially in the tropics and subtropics, because of the fast growth rate of the species used, which results in shorter rotations and ess~ntially all juvenile wood.

Billings' own studies provided the model for subsequent work in this field. Physiological techniques. normally confined to the laboratory. were brought into the field to examine processes under natural environmental conditions. These field studies were accompanied by experiments under controlled conditions where the relative impact of various factors could be assessed and further where genetic as opposed to environmental influences could be separated. This blending of field and laboratory approaches promoted the design of experiments which were of direct relevance to understanding the distribution and abundance of plants in nature. Physiological mechanisms were studied and assessed in the context of the functioning of plants under natural conditions rather than as an end in itself.

For large-scale in vitro plant production the important attributes are the quality, cost effectiveness, maintenance of genetic fidelity, and long-term storage. The need for appropriate in vitro plant regeneration methods for woody plants, including both forest and fruit trees, is still overwhelming in order to overcome problems facing micropropagation such as somaclonal variation, recalcitrant rooting, hyperhydricity, polyphenols, loss of material during hardening and quality of plant material. Moreover, micropropagation may be utilized, in basic research, in production of virus-free planting material, cryopreservation of endangered and elite woody species, applications in tree breeding and reforestation.
