Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A journey through the otherworldly science behind Christopher Nolan’s award-winning film, Interstellar, from executive producer and Nobel Prize-winning physicist Kip Thorne. Interstellar, from acclaimed filmmaker Christopher Nolan, takes us on a fantastic voyage far beyond our solar system. Yet in The Science of Interstellar, Kip Thorne, the Nobel prize-winning physicist who assisted Nolan on the scientific aspects of Interstellar, shows us that the movie’s jaw-dropping events and stunning, never-before-attempted visuals are grounded in real science. Thorne shares his experiences working as the science adviser on the film and then moves on to the science itself. In chapters on wormholes, black holes, interstellar travel, and much more, Thorne’s scientific insights—many of them triggered during the actual scripting and shooting of Interstellar—describe the physical laws that govern our universe and the truly astounding phenomena that those laws make possible. Book excerpt: Synopsis: There are different approaches to writing about the future. Most books focus on technology and discovery, and complications resulting from these changes. These stories are put on a spectrum of scientific accuracy, the bridge between the worlds of fantasy and speculation. The Cosmic Dragon exists between the two poles. Certainly, technological events influence humanity and massive developments do occur throughout the book, but they don't drive the narrative. Instead, they serve as a backdrop as the story focuses on the micro-levels of reality, of personality, sexuality, community, fear, and love. With each new discovery, we debate the benefits it brings, and what is usurped from a previously natural state. The Cosmic Dragon poses questions for the characters to traverse: How do we decide what is beneficial? Are there any natural states of order? With each part and chapter, years pass. This is reflected in the chapter structure. As with life, characters disappear, reappear, are born and die. It is how The Cosmic Dragon lives, by showing glimpses, certain bright points in the interstellar life-cycle. It speaks of what is possible in our future, as humans leave Earth for Mars, the moon, and the belt. We will spread, it is in our nature. When that happens, our species will know true strangers, those humans stuck on the other side of time and space. This book shows who they are and how they will fare. It is important to remember this book is not hard sci-fi. There will be no descriptions of propulsion mechanics. Nor is it soft sci-fi. There will be no orphans fighting with laser swords. It is the semi-rigid, semi-flaccid genre of science fiction. Medium-hard science fiction. Simply, this book swells.

Book excerpt: How science consultants make movie science plausible, in films ranging from 2001: A Space Odyssey to Finding Nemo. Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey, released in 1968, is perhaps the most scientifically accurate film ever produced. The film presented such a plausible, realistic vision of space flight that many moon hoax proponents believe that Kubrick staged the 1969 moon landing using the same studios and techniques. Kubrick's scientific verisimilitude in 2001 came courtesy of his science consultants—including two former NASA scientists—and the more than sixty-five companies, research organizations, and government agencies that offered technical advice. Although most filmmakers don't consult experts as extensively as Kubrick did, films ranging from A Beautiful Mind and Contact to Finding Nemo and The Hulk have achieved some degree of scientific credibility because of science consultants. In Lab Coats in Hollywood, David Kirby examines the interaction of science and cinema: how science consultants make movie science plausible, how filmmakers negotiate scientific accuracy within production constraints, and how movies affect popular perceptions of science. Drawing on interviews and archival material, Kirby examines such science consulting tasks as fact checking and shaping visual iconography. Kirby finds that cinema can influence science as well: Depictions of science in popular films can promote research agendas, stimulate technological development, and even stir citizens into political action.

Book excerpt: In the distant future, corporations have become sustainable communities with their own militaries, and corporate goals have essentially replaced political ideology. On a youthful, rebellious impulse, Lawrence joined the military of a corporation that he now recognizes to be ruthless and exploitative. His only hope for escape is to earn enough money to buy his place in a better corporation. When his platoon is sent to a distant colony to quell a local resistance effort, it seems like a stroke of amazing fortune, and Lawrence plans to rob the colony of their fabled gemstone, the Fallen Dragon, to get the money he needs. However, he soon discovers that the Fallen Dragon is not a gemstone at all, but an alien life form that the local colonists have been protecting since it crashed in their area. Now, Lawrence has to decide if he will steal the alien to exploit the use of its inherent biotechnical processes -- which far exceed anything humans are capable of -- or if he will help the Resistance get the alien home.

Book excerpt: Brutal, broken, and beyond redemption, Ghostaniaz Dragos, son of the most merciless and depraved dragon lord, has nothing left to lose. He lost his childhood—if not his soul—a long time ago, exchanging hope for defiance and love for wrath. And now that he is trapped in the Lower Realm, all bets are off. Beautiful, bold, and beholden to Ghostaniaz for survival, Bethany Reid is in wicked dire straits of her own. She was abducted from a haunted house on All Hallows’ Eve, dragged before a garish, red velvet throne, and offered, like a lamb to the slaughter, to the immortal Pagan King of the underworld. What neither Ghost nor Beth realize is that the Seven have manipulated everything. Beth is Ghost’s preordained dragyra. His fated. His female. The only human woman in many lifetimes of suffering who might stand a chance of reaching his calcified, barren heart. She is his only hope for deliverance, even as he is hers. Two unwitting pawns in a deadly game of chance, power, and dominion, Beth and Ghost must face their inner demons and overcome shadow-walkers, sin eaters, and mortal enemies alike, in order to find their way back to the Temple of Seven. But time is not on their side.
