Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The combined power of genetic analysis and recombinant DNA technology to analyse entire genomes has moved biomedical research into a new and revolutionary phase. The complete sequencing and mapping of the human genome, as well as the genomes of other model organisms, will be the basis for our future understanding of human disease, and will allow us to answer fundamental questions about development and evolution. T The new ICRF Handbook of Genome Analysis is the essential guide to the enormous range of techniques available to the researcher for both the genetic and physical mapping of the genome, as well as the sequencing and analysis of DNA. It is both a protocol manual and a comprehensive information resource. Written by international experts, each chapter presents a state-of-the-art review of a methodology. Methods are fully described and evaluated; their advantages and disadvantages discussed; and their suitability for different investigations considered. Step-by-step protocols, including computer analyses, are given for 123 essential experimental procedures. 'Troubleshooting' sections discuss possible reasons for failure and offer remedies. The primary focus is on human genetics and the benefits of an understanding of the genome for the diagnosis and treatment of human disease. The book also considers the current state of progress in the analysis of genomes of many model organisms, including plants. A major part of the work provides detail on Internet resources as well as basic data on human and other genomes, including mapped disease genes and mouse knockouts. Covers not only the human genome in relation to cancers and other human diseases, but also the genomes of all important model organisms Contains 123 easy-to-follow protocols for essential experimental procedures Reviews a vast range of other information resources, including journals and the Internet * provides an invaluable listing of suppliers of laboratory materials Has been written by international experts from their own practical experience Is mandated by the Imperial Cancer Research Fund - a leader in research in this field Has a sturdy spiral binding within a hardback case for ease of use in the lab

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Molecular Methods of Plant Analysis Concept of the Series The powerful recombinant DNA technology and related developments have had an enormous impact on molecular biology. Any treatment of plant analy sis must make use of these new methods. Developments have been so fast and the methods so powerful that the editors of Modern Methods of Plant Analy sis have now decided to rename the series Molecular Methods of Plant Analy sis. This will not change the general aims of the series, but best describes the thrust and content of the series as we go forward into the new millennium. This does not me an that all chapters apriori deal only with the methods of molecular biology, but rather that these methods are to be found in many chapters together with the more traditional methods of analysis which have seen re cent advances. The numbering of the volumes of the series therefore continues on from 20, which is the most recently published volume under the title Modern Methods of Plant Analysis.

It covers virtually all aspects of biotechnology – traditional and modern – in a concise and well-illustrated manner. Most aspects of plant, animal, and microbial biotechnology have been dealt with adequately. Recent developments in the field have also been included in the book. Chapters on developing countries and regulatory issues have been added to the book to reflect the growing interest and concern of the general public as well as enforcement agencies with intellectual property rights, patenting, and trade-related matters. Special treatment is given to agricultural biotechnology, e.g., transgenic plants and animals and their use for human welfare. The book includes a glossary of useful terms, some sample questions and answers, and a short list of recent literature for supplementary reading.

Book excerpt: The Annual Beltsville Symposium provides a forum for interaction among scientists involved in research that has vital impact on agriculture and on the agricultural sciences. The 10th Symposium in the series, Biotechnology for Solving Agricultural Problems, focuses on the use of a revolutionary new set of tools, biotechnology, and attempts to define the set in terms of its applications in agriculture. Biotechnology has already contributed to the genetic improvement of agricultural products. Procedures that were impossible to test or to implement in the past because of technological limitations are now routinely used by many scientists. Four areas that have benefitted from advances in biotechnology are covered in the symposium proceedings. These areas include genetic manipulation, nutrition, health and disease, and natural resource management. The 31 invited speakers have identified programs of basic and applied research on plants, animals, and insects that fall within these broad areas. Their research strategies included such techniques as germline modification, gene mapping, monoclonal antibody production, and gene transposition. These strategies have tapped new well springs of information and technologies ranging from the regulation of gene expression (and with it, the regulation of development, growth, disease resistance, and nutrient metabolism) to degradation of pesticides and toxic wastes. The applications of biotechnology to agricultural research have opened virgin vistas with enormous potential. The new biotechnological techniques and those that will evolve with their use will contribute markedly to the capacity of the agricultural sciences to advance the well-being of the human race.
