Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to describe the phenomenological experience of men who identify ethnically as Mexican American. In the research literature, group identification, microaggressions, cultural complexes, and archetypes were shown to influence the quality of the experience for individuals of this ethnic group. To identify these processes in individuals this qualitative study gathered data through a 4-month research study that included a dream group, the submission of dreams, and narrative interviews with four Mexican American males in midlife. The data was analyzed in four parts: (a) a depth hermeneutic interview analysis, (b) a thematic review of discussion items in the dream groups, (c) a structural dream analysis, and (d) archetypal amplification. The results showed that microaggressions and an American bi-ethnic cultural complex aggravate Mexican American males. The results also showed that dreams respond to the identity constructions and capture evidence of the psyche’s connection to the cultural historical dimension of the collective unconscious (i.e. Aztec and American cultures). The participant’s unconscious attitudes showed an identification with their bi-ethnic identity on the one hand, and on the other hand a response from the unconscious to this attitude through dreams revealing Aztec mythology and Nahuatl language, disclosing a connection to the collective unconscious, and potentiating the healing of the cultural complexes. Although there were limitations to the study, including a limited sample size, the study has implications for clinical, depth, and acculturation psychology.

The research is based on recent theoretical developments which suggest that a cultural identity need not be exclusive. Instead, a person may develop in such a way as to make possible identification with more than one culture and in the process acquire a wide range of competencies and sensitivites. If so, biculturalism could prove a highly significant asset with regard to development to the levels of intra- and interpersonal sophistication required of persons who staff settings characterized by ethnic diversity, complex team work, and recurrent problems of a human relations nature. The bicultural person may be a superior candidate for a variety of organizational and social roles. Confirmation of this possibility awaits development and validation of a comprehensive instrument for measuring biculturalism and, more specifically, particular personality, life history, and behavioral correlates of biculturalism that predict career and leadership potential in different settings, personal and social adjustment in those settings, and satisfaction in living. Initial efforts at developing an instrument suited to this purpose are summarized in this report. A selection instrument for identifying bicultural persons was developed from intensive interviews of a small sample of bicultural adults. Revisions and refinements, combined with field testing, yielded a three part instrument suited to identifying individual's exposure to, or involvement in, primary institutions (family, religion, politics, education) of Chicano and Anglo cultures.

Book excerpt: Although the Mexican population continues to be the largest Hispanic group in the United States, educational attainment is not increasing at a proportionate rate. First generation, Mexican-American students continue to have low enrollment in higher education institutions and high levels of attrition. Socioeconomic variables and ethnicity have correlated highly with these outcomes for thirty years, and programs have proliferated to address them, without much impact. Perhaps we need new approaches. This study investigates the lived experience of students attempting a university education. The goal of this research was to take the topic of educational achievement one step further by exploring identity development factors for first generation, Mexican-American college students via personal narratives. Researchers have long observed that people come to make sense of life via stories (Bruner, 1990; McAdams, 1985; Sarbin, 1986). Personal stories help to make sense of the past as well as foresee the future while helping to define current identity via recalling and/or retelling stories, particularly for emerging adults. Identity creation and negation was explored via McAdams' life story model of identity: identity is an ever changing life story that strives for psychosocial unity and seeks purpose in relation to the world. The data collected from sixteen first generation, Mexican-American students at one university revealed that factors such as familial connections, cultural capital, generational immigration status, and self-discovery opportunities contribute to the ongoing creation and negotiation of identity. The outcome was the development of an identity soundboard which provides a visual representation of identity factors, each with its own control button, which is constantly adjusted according to individual experiences and narratives. The significance of these results is two-fold. One, it provides students and educators with a new perspective on identity development which can translate into new ways to address academic retention, attrition, and success. And two, it provides identity researchers with a new, customizable model with which to explore a variety of identity development processes, adaptable to specific research interests. The Hispanic community is a key player to the nation's economic future, making efforts to foster a well-educated workforce a priority. Colleges and universities stand to benefit from a tailored approach to outreach and retention of students. It is by obtaining a glimpse of students' reality that we can, as faculty, staff, and administrators, make changes that can positively affect their educational experience and outcome.

Book excerpt: Social and personal identities were examined for samples of college graduate students in three culturally different groups: Anglo-American, Mexican-American, and Mexican National. Four identities were explored in terms of salience, frequency, and valence: religious, family, gender, and peer. No differences were found between the groups on religious and gender identities. As predicted, both the Mexican National and Mexican-American groups scored family higher than did members of the Anglo- American group. Peer responses were not analyzed because there was insufficient data. Three incidental questions were also explored; the salience of consensual versus subconsensual identities; sex difference regarding family and gender identities; and declared religious faith and family and gender identities. For all three cultural groups, and for both sexes, family emerged as the most prominent identity. Gender is the second most important identity, followed by religious and peer identities respectively. Of the incidental questions, the most important finding was that whereas most of the previous research using the same instrument found consensual identities predominant, subconsensual responses were predominant in this study. There were no male-female differences either within or across groups. Such findings raised a question about whether previous cross-cultural studies of sex role could, in fact, comment meaningfully on cultural differences. This was an exploratory study using a small number of subjects (seven men and women in each group) which were not randomly selected. Therefore, the findings were severly qualified.
