Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This up-to-the-minute reference explores the pharmacodynamics of antimicrobials as well as the absorption, distribution, metabolism, and elimination of the major classes of antimicrobials-covering new agents such as ketolide antibiotics and highlighting the pharmacodynamic relationship between drug concentration and antimicrobial activity, as well as the relationship of pharmacodynamics to bacterial resistance. Contains specific examples and practical applications for the design of effective dosing regimens! Written by recognized experts in the field, Antimicrobial Pharmacodynamics in Theory and Clinical Practice describes the pharmacodynamic properties of all major classes of antibiotics parameters for microbiological activity of antimicrobial agents such as minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimal bactericidal concentration (MBC) serum/tissue protein binding and penetration rates differences between in vivo and in vitro postantibiotic effects (PAE) and more! With nearly 1000 references, tables, drawings, and illustrations, Antimicrobial Pharmacodynamics in Theory and Clinical Practice is a state-of-the-art reference for infectious disease specialists, pulmonologists, pharmacists, pharmacologists, microbiologists, biological chemists, epidemiologists, internists, and students in these disciplines.

Download or read book Advances in Molecular Biology and Targeted Treatment for AIDS written by Ajit Kumar and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the discovery of HIV-l as the etiologic agent of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) in the early 1980s, remarkable progress has been made in both the basic understanding of the biological processes leading to AIDS and an accelerated effort in finding new treatments. As is often the case in rapidly advancing fields, most of the scientific discussions are best handled in specialized groups. The effort to organize a meeting on advances in molecular biology and targeted treatment for AIDS was an experiment of sorts to gather experts in selected areas of overlapping interests where advances in basic biology and its application in the development of new drugs could be discussed. Of necessity, the scope of the meeting had to be limited to maintain a certain focus. Important areas of rapid development in AIDS research, such as the vaccine development, epidemiology, animal models, etc. , had to be left out for more specialized meetings. The result, from all accounts, appeared to be quite a successful gathering, which provided a forum for informal discussions among scientists from industry and academic institutions. A remarkable feature of the AIDS virus is its genetic complexity and how some of its seemingly "extra genes" manage to regulate the normal functions of the host and most importantly its immune system.

Book excerpt: Medicinal chemistry is both science and art. The science of medicinal chemistry offers mankind one of its best hopes for improving the quality of life. The art of medicinal chemistry continues to challenge its practitioners with the need for both intuition and experience to discover new drugs. Hence sharing the experience of drug research is uniquely beneficial to the field of medicinal chemistry. Drug research requires interdisciplinary team-work at the interface between chemistry, biology and medicine. Therefore, the topic-related series Topics in Medicinal Chemistry covers all relevant aspects of drug research, e.g. pathobiochemistry of diseases, identification and validation of (emerging) drug targets, structural biology, drugability of targets, drug design approaches, chemogenomics, synthetic chemistry including combinatorial methods, bioorganic chemistry, natural compounds, high-throughput screening, pharmacological in vitro and in vivo investigations, drug-receptor interactions on the molecular level, structure-activity relationships, drug absorption, distribution, metabolism, elimination, toxicology and pharmacogenomics. In general, special volumes are edited by well known guest editors

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Internists, surgeons, critical care physicians and nephrologists all treat critically ill patients with renal failure and the multiple system organ dysfunction syndrome. A comprehensive review of the state of the art of this topic is definitely needed both in academic and clinical medicine, and Critical Care Nephrology fulfils this need. It is a useful reference tool for both nephrologists and intensive care specialists and it is therefore no coincidence that the editors of the book are themselves specialists in these particular fields. The book addresses the following: definitions of critical illness, epidemiology, monitoring and diagnostic procedures, pathophysiology of organ systems in relation to kidney function, concepts of renal physiologic and pathologic responses to various derangements, oxygen transport and cardiovascular adaptations, hemodynamic parameters, respiratory parameters, mechanical ventilation and cardiac support, and severity score parameters. The book is also devoted to all forms of acute renal failure with specific reference to intensive care patients. The nature of the multiple organ dysfunction syndrome is discussed with special emphasis on the impact of different organs dysfunction and kidney failure. Kidney function and acute renal failure in patients with kidney, liver and heart transplants is also considered, as well as acute illness occurring in chronic hemodialysis patients. Special emphasis is placed on therapeutic interventions and treatment procedures. Different forms of organ support are discussed including liver, lung and cardiac therapy.
