Book excerpt: In the Asia-Pacific region, international trade has proven to be an engine of growth which underscores the need for policies on environment and trade to be mutually supportive. This project considers such countries as Bangladesh, China, India, Pakistan, Republic of Korea and Vietnam. It provides a regional overview on trade and environmental issues which could have restrictive effects on inter-regional trade, and environmental problems arising from export products of the region and measures required for their mitigation. The project indicates that economies in the Asia and Pacific region are heavily dependent on the utilization of their ecosystems to provide their economic resource base. Development requires open international market for regional exports drown from these resources. It is recommended that co-operation and co-ordination among the countries of the Asian and Pacific region should be promoted to build their capacity in the formulation of environmental policies to sustain both welfare increases and the natural environmental resource base.
