Book excerpt: In this book input-output analysis is applied to the regional economy of The Netherlands. The re~ults are based on a publication of The Netherlands Central Bureau of Statistics: Regional Accounts 1960, The Hague, Staatsuitgeverij, 1968. Dr. Schilderinck and Mr. Sinner call special attention to the structure which are concealed in the cumulated primary costs of the final demand categories. Part I of the book deals particularly with a survey of this feature of input-output analysis. Part II starts with comparing the production structure of each industry in the eleven provinces of The Netherlands by means of semi-regional tables. Next, authors analyse the structure of the induced income resulting from a surplus or deficit of each industry on current final transactions per province. Thanks to its methodical elaboration the book is a valuable guide to those confronted with the problems of regional economic analysis. J. J. J. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This textbook helps students to understand the social, economic, and environmental importance of the mutual relations between industries in the same and in different regions and nations and demonstrates how to model these relations using regional, interregional, and international input-output (IO) models. It enables readers to extend these basic IO models with endogenous household expenditures, to employ supply-use tables (SUTs) that explicitly distinguish the products used and sold by industry, and to use social accounting matrices (SAMs) that detail the generation, redistribution and spending of income. In addition to the standard demand-driven IO quantity model and its accompanying cost-push IO price model, the book also discusses the economic assumptions and usefulness of the supply-driven IO quantity model and its accompanying revenue-pull IO price model. The final chapters highlight three main applications of the IO model: (1) economic impact analysis of negative supply shocks as caused by, for example, natural disasters, (2) linkages, key sector, and cluster analysis, (3) structural decomposition analysis, especially of regional, interregional, and international growth, and demonstrate the strengths and weaknesses of these IO applications. Written for graduate students of regional and spatial science as well as for economists and planners, this book provides a better understanding of the foundations, the power, the applicability and the limitations of input-output analysis. The second, completely revised edition expands on updating IO tables, modelling the disaster reconstruction phase, and includes an appendix on the necessary matrix algebra.

Book excerpt: This monograph is about the multi regional input-output model used in long-run simulation. The input-output technique was originally developed for spaceless, short-term analysis of a national economy. However, its high potential as an analytical tool has resulted in an expansion of its application in various directions. Thus, we now have the inter- and mul tiregional input-output model, in which a nation is broken down into a number of interacting regions, and some applications dealing with long-range projections of input-output systems. This study attempts to integrate those two directions within the framework of interregional simulation modeling. A major problem with the multiregional input-output model for long-run simulation is how to update the technical and trade coefficients in the model. This study focuses on the trade coefficient updating problem, and a solution is presented in which a trade coefficient model is coupled with the price model built into the input-output system. When I began this project, the main problem facing me was not purely theoretical but a very practical one: how to design an interregional model for Indonesia. Indonesia is a country characterized by its quite uneven population distribution over the archipelago. My interest was in the formation of its settlement policy, and the use of modeling to assist in this process. This original intention may be evident in various parts of the text.

Book excerpt: This essential reference for students and scholars in the input-output research and applications community has been fully revised and updated to reflect important developments in the field. Expanded coverage includes construction and application of multiregional and interregional models, including international models and their application to global economic issues such as climate change and international trade; structural decomposition and path analysis; linkages and key sector identification and hypothetical extraction analysis; the connection of national income and product accounts to input-output accounts; supply and use tables for commodity-by-industry accounting and models; social accounting matrices; non-survey estimation techniques; and energy and environmental applications. Input-Output Analysis is an ideal introduction to the subject for advanced undergraduate and graduate students in many scholarly fields, including economics, regional science, regional economics, city, regional and urban planning, environmental planning, public policy analysis and public management.

Hewings develops an analytic framework and constructs regional input-output models. He then expands the model to consider interaction between regions. He links the model to linear programming and demographic models to provide a more sophisticated representation of reality.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Impact analysis of economic policy is a subject which is gaining in creasing interest in both theoretical and applied economic research. Two main reasons for the growing interest can be distinguished. First, the situation of the government's finances is making it more than ever necessary to assess critically the effects of the instruments used to pursue public policy goals. Secondly, because of the economic stagnation government will be increasingly appealed to for support. Impact analysis, however, is hampered by three major problems: methodological deficiencies, lack of econometric approaches which have been adapted to the specific conditions of this kind of analysis and data availability. The present book deals with these problems in the context of regional economic policy. However, the main findings are broadly applicable in various other fields. This book is primarily oriented towards those who have a practical interest. Therefore, attention is mostly paid to the practical aspects of the methodology and the measurements methods. Furthermore, the methodologi cal and econometric parts are supplemented by two extensive case studies. ~- Three people have contributed constructive criticisms and suggestions on some chapters of the book: Peter Nijkamp, Theo Dijkstra and Manfred Fischer. I am very grateful for their support. They, of course, share no blame for any deficiences in the present form of the book. I also gratefully acknowledge the assistance of Harry Barkema and Marja Schuring with the computations.

Not only do academics find it a powerful tool in understanding how large scale economies--especially national economies--work, but many governments maintain computer input-output models to study their own economies. This important volume of work contains the latest research using the I-O model, focusing primarily on technology, planning, and development. The book derives from a conference held in Sapporo, Japan, in July, 1986.

Book excerpt: In 1976, volume 116 of the Lecture Notes in Economics and Mathematical Systems appeared in the library of the University of Illinois. The title of the book, Input-Output Analysis and the Structure of Income Distribution was sufficiently intriguing to one of the present editors (Hewings) to command attention. Some years later, during the First World Congress of the Regional Science Association in Cambridge Massachusetts in 1980, Madden and Batey presented some of their work using their now familiar demographic-economic modeling system. Discussion ensued about the relationship between this system, Miyazawa's formulation and the social accounting matrices most closely associated with the work of Stone. During a year's residence at the University of Illinois, Batey was able to produce a valuable typology of multipliers that began the process of integrating these several modeling systems into a coherent package. Thereafter, a number of regional scientists have exploited the ideas and insights proposed by Miyazawa, especially the notion of the interrelational income multiplier and the ideas of internal and external multipliers.
