Book Synopsis Encyclopedia of Hydrology and Water Resources by : Reginald W. Herschy
Download or read book Encyclopedia of Hydrology and Water Resources written by Reginald W. Herschy and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1998-07-31 with total page 793 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fresh water supplies of the Earth are finite and as the world's population continues to grow humanity's thirst for this water seems unquenchable. Intense pressure is being exerted upon freshwater resources and a lack of adequate clean water is seen as one of the most serious global problems for the 21st century. Indeed it has been said that the next war will be fought over water, not oil. Human health and the health of supporting ecosystems increasingly depends upon our ability to find, control, manage and understand water. In a single volume, The Encyclopedia of Hydrology and Water Resources provides the reader with a comprehensive overview and understanding of the diverse field of hydrology. The intimate inclusion of material on water resources emphasizes the practical applications of this field, applications which are indispensable in any modern approach to the subject. This volume is a vital reference for all hydrologists, hydrogeologists and water engineers worldwide, whether they are concerned with the exploitation of new sources of water, the protection and management of existing reserves, or the science of surface water and groundwater flow. 114 eminent scientists from 17 countries worldwide have contributed to this authoritative volume. Superbly illustrated throughout, it includes almost 300 entries on a range of key topics, including arid and semi-arid zones, climates and climate change, floods and droughts, desertification, entropy, flow measurement, groundwater, hydrological cycle, hydrological models, infiltration, karst hydrology, paleohydrology, precipitation, remote sensing, river pollution prevention, rivers, lakes and seas, satellite hydrology, soil erosion, water treatment, water use, weather radar, and world water balance.
Book Synopsis Biogeochemistry in Mineral Exploration by : Colin E. Dunn
Download or read book Biogeochemistry in Mineral Exploration written by Colin E. Dunn and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2011-08-30 with total page 481 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Significant refinements of biogeochemical methods applied to mineral exploration have been made during more than twenty years since the last major publication on this technique. This innovative, practical and comprehensive text is designed as a field handbook and an office reference volume. It outlines the historical development of biogeochemical methods applied to mineral exploration, and provides details of what, how, why and when to collect samples from all major climatic environments with examples from around the world. Recent commercialization of sophisticated analytical technology permits immensely more insight into the multi-element composition of plants. In particular, precise determination of ultra-trace levels of 'pathfinder' elements in dry tissues and recognition of element distribution patterns with respect to concealed mineralization. Data handling and interpretation are discussed in context of a wealth of previously unpublished information, including a section on plant mineralogy, much of which has been classified as confidential until recently. Data are provided on the biogeochemistry of more than 60 elements and, by case history examples, their roles discussed in assisting in the discovery of concealed mineral deposits. A look to the future includes the potential role of bacteria to provide new focus for mineral exploration. - Describes the practical aspects of plant selection and collection in different environments around the world, and how to process and analyze them - Discusses more than 60 elements in plants, with data interpretation and case history results that include exploration for Au, PGEs, U, base metals and kimberlites

Book Synopsis Noble Metals and Biological Systems by : Robert R. Brooks
Download or read book Noble Metals and Biological Systems written by Robert R. Brooks and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1992-04-06 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Noble Metals and Biological Systems examines the relationship between noble metals (gold, silver, and platinum group metals) and biological systems. The book is divided into three parts. Part 1 is concerned with the analytical chemistry of noble metals and includes a description of the latest methods of analysis. Part 2 describes such topics as ecology and environmental science of noble metals as they pertain to biogeochemical exploration, noble metals in hair, the environmental geochemistry of palladium, microorganisms and noble metals, animals and noble metals, and a general survey of noble metals in the environment. Coverage is comprehensive and includes information regarding the use of dogs and termites as field assistants in mineral prospecting, as well as the fascinating story of the "gold bug", a microorganism that plates itself with gold. Part 3 is devoted entirely to noble metals in the treatment of disease and includes chapters describing the use of osmium and gold for arthritis treatment, silver as a bactericide, and platinum and ruthenium as anticancer agents. Noble Metals and Biological Systems will provide fascinating reading for applied geochemists, environmentalists, public health specialists, ecologists, microbiologists, clinical biochemists, oncologists, and specialists in rheumatic diseases.
Book Synopsis Base Metal Sulfide Deposits in Sedimentary and Volcanic Environments by : Guenther Friedrich
Download or read book Base Metal Sulfide Deposits in Sedimentary and Volcanic Environments written by Guenther Friedrich and published by Springer. This book was released on 2012-11-21 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research on base metal sulfide deposits is among the oldest and best-documented subjects of economic geologists worldwide, c- sidering that copper was first mined about 3000 years ago on the island of Cyprus. During the past 10 years, after the exciting discovery of active sulfide formation on the modem ocean floor, a considerable flow of new ideas has stimulated and influenced the discussion of o- forming processes for copper-zinc-Iead sulfides in sedimentary and volcanic environments. The development of new genetic concepts consequently led to reinterpretation of some apparently well-est- lished formation models. This Proceedings Volume contains a collection of carefully selected papers on current research on the geology and metallogeny of base metal sulfide deposits presented as oral or poster contri- tions at the DMG (Deutsche Mineralogische Gesellschaft) - GDMB (Gesellschaft Deutscher Metallhiitten- und Bergleute - Fachsektion Lagerstiittenforschung) - SGA (Society of Geology Applied to Mineral Deposits) Joint Meeting on Ore Deposits in Aachen, Federal Republic of Germany, September 16-19, 1985. Base metal sulfide deposits with different ore compositions occur in a wide variety of geological and lithological settings of almost any age. This has been taken into account in organizing this volume along the lines of classical host-rock classification. The first group of contributions focuses on sediment-hosted base metal sulfide deposits including examples of Kupferschiefer and Copperbelt-type, as well as lead-zinc mineralization in car- nate host rocks.
