Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes the transformation of telecommunications from national network monopolies to a new system, the "network of networks," and the glue that holds it together, interconnection. By their very nature, monopoly-owned networks provided a small number of standardized, nationwide services. Over the past two decades, however, new forces in the world economy began to unravel this traditional system. The driving force behind the change was the shift toward an information-based economy. Especially for large organizations, the price, control, security, and reliability of telecommunications became variables requiring organized attention. Thus, monopoly began to give way to the "network of networks," the foundation of today's telecommunications and Internet infrastructure. Taking a broad, multidisciplinary perspective Eli Noam discusses the importance and history of interconnection policy, as well as recent policy reforms both within the United States and around the globe. Other important topics he discusses include interconnection prices, the unbundling of interconnection, and the technology of interconnection. He concludes with an examination of social and policy issues, including the free flow of content, universal service and privacy protection, and the future of telecommunications.

Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2010 in the subject Business economics - Business Management, Corporate Governance, grade: 1,0, University of Applied Sciences Stuttgart (-), language: English, abstract: The Importance of the Internet - One of the most important trends over the last years was undisputedly the swift development from an industrial to the so called information society1, with the World Wide Web leading the way. According to a study of the EITO2 in 2008, 1.23 billion people worldwide used the internet in this year, 2010 it will likely be about 1.5 billion people (fig.1), not including the numerous cell phone users going online by mobile telephony connection.3 Approximately 60% of the German population work with the internet habitually, tending upwards 2% to 3% yearly. Furthermore, computers and laptops with an internet termination are available in 75% of German households, The social reorganisation launches changes that not only individuals but above all companies should take into consideration, being responsive to it. This requires an adoption of every corporate division to the increasing virtualization. Strategic Changes The economic system is strongly shaped by prearranged framework conditions, especially by the markets. Companies have to adapt in the extent external factors e.g. the internet are modifying markets, to remain competitive. Characteristics of the internet changing markets are: - Velocity of information transfer; - Synchronicity or interactivity; - Small operating costs. To be or remain successful in such an internet economy it is not sufficient to react to superficial changes, but trends have to be identified early and incorporated actively in the company's strategy as well as in the resulting division strategy. litical, and cultural activity.

It is accelerating the dynamics of innovation in the digital economy, affecting the nature and intensity of competition, and enabling private companies, governments, and the non-profit sector to develop new business models. In this new ecosystem many of the theoretical assumptions and historical observations upon which economics rests are altered and need critical reassessment.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Computation and communication technologies underpin work and development in many different areas. Among them, Computer-Aided Design of electronic systems and eLearning technologies are two areas which, though different, in fact share many concerns. The design of CAD and eLearning systems already touches on a number of parallels, such as system interoperability, user interfaces, standardisation, XML-based formats, reusability aspects, etc. Furthermore, the teaching of Design Automation tools and methods is particularly amenable to a distant or blended learning setting, and implies the interconnection of typical CAD tools, such as simulators or synthesis tools, with eLearning tools. There are many other aspects in which synergy can be found when using eLearning technology for teaching and learning technology. EduTech: Computer-Aided Design Meets Computer-Aided Learning contains the proceedings of the EduTech2004 workshop, which was held in August 2004 in conjunction with the 18th IFIP World Computer Congress in Toulouse, France, and sponsored by the International Federation for Information Processing (IFIP). Organized by IFIP WG 10.5 (Design and Engineering of Electronic Systems) in cooperation with IFIP WG 3.6 (Distance Education), the workshop proceedings explore the interrelationship between these two subjects, where computer-aided design meets computer-aided learning. The book includes papers related to eLearning in the area of electronic CAD, but also includes contributions tackling general issues of eLearning that are applicable to this and many other areas such as reusability, standards, open source tools or mobility. This book will be of value to those interested in the latest developments in eLearning in general, and also to those coming from the electronic design field who want to know how to apply these developments in their area.

Book excerpt: Digital technology has enabled connectivity on an unimagined scale. Human beings are social animals and economic activity promotes this socialization. Market transactions are based on optimism about the future, faith that the world is good and trust that growth is organic or coming from within the system. Individuals therefore invest in the future by having children, by extending credit and accepting risk, and by building connections with others in the sincere expectation of this connectivity being reciprocated. This book explores the unintended consequences of ubiquitous connectivity. The first effect is captured by the sharing model. Technology offers multiple avenues for sharing experiences and personal information, so active engagement with this increased content uses mental effort. Connection inevitably leads to comparisons with other groups and individuals, so despite the benefits of affirmation and group inclusion, these links corrode social networks, leading to depression and mental apathy. The second effect--the result of the commercialization of sharing--is encapsulated in the attention deficit model. Loss of self-worth, driven by the first effect, encourages further connectivity and sharing as buyers seek more comfort and reassurance via social media, paying with time and personal information. The product is digital content and the payment is with time and data. Correspondingly, social media fulfills this demand with exuberance, both via user-generated content and commercially curated content. We are overwhelmed with even more information, paying with increasingly scarce time and attention. Finally, the third and most consequential effect is diminished risk taking. Attention scarcity, as a consequence of the content tsunami, throttles cognitive effort, impairing judgment and decision-making. So the safe bet may be to do nothing . . . take no risks and no gambles. Weaving together the latest research on economics, psychology, and neuroscience, this book fills a void for readers wanting a smart, clear analysis of communications markets and the commercialization of Internet-inspired connectivity.
