Book excerpt: The book is the culmination of a research effort which spanned all continents and involved a large number of research teams from both the industrialised and developing countries. The book addresses a number of key issues related to technology transfer by small and medium-sized enterprises most especially whether such companies are more effective transferors than larger transnational corporations. A key aspect of the research was the fact that firms in source and host countries were matched to assure a degree of consistency in the firm coverage and their responses.

Book excerpt: The growth of the multinational enterprise (MNE) has led to an increasing interest in international business strategy from scholars, professionals, and policy makers alike. MNEs must contend with challenges in both their home and host international markets, and increasingly uncertain conditions in the international business environment demand superior firm-level capabilities for multinational firms to achieve and maintain competitive advantages in the long-run. This Handbook explores the progress made in international business strategy theory and practice in the last few decades. Written by an international team of leading experts, it captures the differences in motivations and decision-making processes between smaller and larger firms, private, family, and state owned firms, and emerging or developed market multinationals. It elaborates on the links between international strategy and the social responsibilities of the firm in its various host market contexts, including the deployment of effective and ethical human resource practices in international markets. Most importantly, it lays out how the classic principles of international competitive strategy are transformed in today's markets, in great part due to digitalization, and provides suggestions on how MNEs can develop international business strategies to respond to these transformations. The implications of these discussions for strategy and practice are becoming ever more profound. This Handbook will prove a valuable resource for both international business scholars and practitioners.

Book excerpt: The objective of this research is to address the need for empirical evidence on how and why British and Indian SMEs engage in and sustain mutual business relationships, and to contribute to theory development. It focuses on their internationalization strategies, and the potential relevance of psychic distance, social capital and learning. A mixed qualitative and quantitative methodology is employed to study the internationalization of British companies to India and vice-versa. The views of both British and Indian SME entrepreneurs were obtained for this purpose. The empirical investigation proceeded through two stages. The first stage consisted of qualitative exploratory research among the managers of 30 British companies and their partners in India. The second stage of the study involved a survey of 100 British SMEs and 100 Indian SMEs. The findings show that SMEs entrepreneurs tend to rely heavily on network support. However, despite their personal networks and use of advanced communication technologies, some entrepreneurs could not cope with the complex institutional features of foreign markets. We also observed that national differences are of considerable relevance for SME internationalization. We conclude that a distinct theory of SME internationalization is required and offer some suggestions to that end based on the research findings.

Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2022 in the subject Business economics - Investment and Finance, grade: A, University of Leicester (Business Management), course: Internationalisation, language: English, abstract: This report explores the motivations, barriers, and modes of entry of SMEs internationalisation within a specific country context, with a focus on the Indian market. The report adopts three theories of internationalisation, namely the UPPSALA Model, the Eclectic (OLI) Model, and the Network Models, to demonstrate the various aspects of SMEs internationalisation. SMEs often lack the resources and capabilities of larger firms, which makes internationalisation a challenging process. Nevertheless, internationalisation offers significant benefits such as access to new customers and suppliers, increased market share, and opportunities for growth and innovation. The case study of the Indian market is employed to explore the various modes of entry, barriers, and motivations that SMEs encounter in this developing economy. By studying these factors, researchers and practitioners can develop strategies to support SMEs in their internationalisation efforts and promote sustainable economic development. SMEs can leverage their resources and capabilities, such as innovative product offerings, cost-efficient production processes, and unique marketing and distribution channels, to gain a competitive advantage and succeed in international markets. Overall, exploring the motivations, barriers, and modes of entry of SMEs within a specific country context is essential for understanding the unique challenges and opportunities that businesses face in different markets and promoting their sustainable growth.

Book excerpt: This book studies the organization and effects of linkages between transnational corporations - mainly Danish - and local firms in developing countries. It is based on a number of case studies of linkage collaborations and a survey of about ninety Danish firms and their relations to partners in developing countries. The analyzed host countries are Ghana, India, Malaysia, South Africa, and Vietnam. The book is a contribution to the emerging literature on firm strategy in developing countries, offering new empirical evidence of the multi-faceted and complex nature of cross-border inter-firm linkages. It documents how even small firms in both developed and developing countries engage in - and can benefit from - cross-border linkages.
