Download or read book Laser Science and Technology written by A.N. Chester and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 449 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The conference "Laser Science and Technology" was held May 11-19, 1987 in Erice, Sicily. This was the 12th conference organized by the Internatio nal School of Quantum Electronics, under the auspices of the "Ettore Majorana" Center for Scientific Culture. This volume contains both the in vited and contributed papers presented at the conference, covering current research work in two areas: new laser sources, and laser applications. The operation of the first laser by Dr. Theodore Maiman in 1960 initia ted a decade of scientific exploration of new laser sources. This was fol lowed by the decade of the 1970s, which was characterized by "technology push" in which the discoveries of the 1960s were seeking practical applica tion. In the 1980s we are instead seeking "applications pull," in which the success and rapid maturing of laser applications provides both inspiration and financial resources to stimulate additional work both on laser sources and applications. The papers presented in these Proceedings attest to the great vitali ty of research in both these areas: New Laser Sources. The papers describe current developments in ultra violet excimer lasers, X-ray lasers, and free electron lasers. These new lasers share several characteristics: each is a potentially important coher ent source; each is at a relatively short wavelength (below 1 micrometer); and each is receiving significant development attention today.

This book was released on 2013-03-12 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is based on lectures and contributed papers presented at the Eighth Course of the International School of Materials Science and Tech nology that was held in Erice, Sicily, Italy at the Ettore Majorana Centre for Scientific Culture during the period 1-13 July 1985. The subject of the course was "Electromagnetic Surface Excitations". Forty lectures were given by eleven distinguished scientists and engineers from France, Italy, the United Kingdom, and the United States. In addition to the lectur ers, approximately fifty participants representing eleven different countries throughout the world t. ook part in the course. Short contributed papers were presented by seventeen participants on the results of their own re search. The subject of the Course is of great importance for both pure science and for practical applications such as telecommunications. A technolog ical revolution is occurring in which the transmission of information by means of electrical currents travelling in copper wires is being replaced by transmission by means of light travelling in objects known as optical wave guides. The manipulation and processing of the light signals prior and subsequent to transmission through the wave guide has resulted in a technology often referred to as integrated optics. Important to the opera tion of integrated optics devices is the behavior of electromagnetic waves near surfaces and interfaces. One of the goals of the course was to further the dialogue between engineers and physicists in common areas of interest related to the propagation of electromagnetic waves along surfaces.

Book Synopsis Photonic Signal Processing by : Le Nguyen Binh
Download or read book Photonic Signal Processing written by Le Nguyen Binh and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2018-10-03 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The potential of photonic signal processing (PSP) to overcome electronic limits for processing ultra-wideband signals, provide signal conditioning that can be integrated in line with fiber optic systems, and improve signal quality makes this technology extremely attractive for improvement in receiver sensitivity performance. Spanning the current transitional period, Photonic Signal Processing: Techniques and Applications addresses the merging techniques of processing and manipulating signals propagating in the optical domain. The book begins with a historical perspective of PSP and introduces photonic components essential for photonic processing systems, such as optical amplification devices, optical fibers, and optical modulators. The author demonstrates the representation of photonic circuits via a signal flow graph technique adapted for photonic domain. He describes photonic signal processors, such as differentiators and integrators, and their applications for the generation of solitons, and then covers the application of these solitons in optically amplified fiber transmission systems. The book illustrates the compensation dispersion using a photonic processor, the design of optical filters using photonic processor techniques, and the filtering of microwave signals in the optical domain. Exploring methods for the processing of signals in the optical domain, the book includes solutions to photonic circuits that use signal flow techniques and significant applications in short pulse generation, the filtering of signals, differentiation, and the integration of signals. It delineates fundamental techniques on the processing of signals in the optical domain as well as their applications that lead to advanced aspects of performing generation of short pulses, integration, differentiation, and filtering for optical communications systems and networks and processing of ultra-high speed signals.

Book Synopsis Novel Silicon Based Technologies by : R.A. Levy
Download or read book Novel Silicon Based Technologies written by R.A. Levy and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Silicon, as an electronic substrate, has sparked a technological revolution that has allowed the realization of very large scale integration (VLSI) of circuits on a chip. These 6 fingernail-sized chips currently carry more than 10 components, consume low power, cost a few dollars, and are capable of performing data processing, numerical computations, and signal conditioning tasks at gigabit-per-second rates. Silicon, as a mechanical substrate, promises to spark another technological revolution that will allow computer chips to come with the eyes, ears, and even hands needed for closed-loop control systems. The silicon VLSI process technology which has been perfected over three decades can now be extended towards the production of novel structures such as epitaxially grown optoelectronic GaAs devices, buried layers for three dimensional integration, micromechanical mechanisms, integrated photonic circuits, and artificial neural networks. This book begins by addressing the processing of electronic and optoelectronic devices produced by using lattice mismatched epitaxial GaAs films on Si. Two viable technologies are considered. In one, silicon is used as a passive substrate in order to take advantage of its favorable properties over bulk GaAs; in the other, GaAs and Si are combined on the same chip in order to develop IC configurations with improved performance and increased levels of integration. The relationships between device operation and substrate quality are discussed in light of potential electronic and optoelectronic applications.
