Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Eleventh International Latin American Symposium is an important mile stone reflecting the rapid development of basic biochemistry in Latin America. The topic "Gene Expression and Its Regulation" was received enthusiastically, and, thanks to the vision of our Argentine colleagues, the program developed rapidly under the leadership of Dr. Gabriel Favelukes as General Secretary of the Symposium. It is interesting to note the tremendous progress that has been made in basic and applied sciences in Latin America over the past few years. The increasing initiative and leadership being demonstrated by our Latin American colleagues in organizing these symposia is a most satisfying development that speaks well for the future of science in Latin America. The early publication of this symposium has been made possible through the efforts of an editorial board consisting of Dr. F. T. Kenney (Oak Ridge National Laboratory), Dr. Gabriel Favelukes (University of La Plata), Dr. Barbara Ham kalo (Oak Ridge National Laboratory), and Dr. J. T. August (Albert Einstein College of Medicine). As in previous symposia, excellent support has come from the Ford Founda tion through a grant to the National Academy of Sciences, the United States Atomic Energy Commission, the National Science Foundation, OAS, and other groups. Through the cooperation of the authorities at the University of La Plata, the Albert Einstein College of Medicine (the United States cosponsoring university), and other schools, this very successful symposium was made possible.

Book Synopsis Some Aspects of Chromosome Structure and Function by : R.C. Sobti

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It was at the end of the 19th century that a Swiss biologist, Karl Nageli first proposed the existence of hereditary organelles that carried information from parent to offspring. Ensuing decades experienced vigorous studies that led to the development of discovery that chromosomes are indeed the carriers of genetic information. Subsequent studies, especially by Morgan and Bridges, established unequivocally the chromosome theory of inheritance. Today, the structure of chromosome is well established. At the physical level, eukaryotic chromosomes are composed of a single, linear, double helix of DNA. The elementary helical structure involves nucleosomes, comprised of histones around which the DNA is wrapped. A hierarchy of higher order of chromosomal architecture may possibly be responsible for the regulation of gene helical structures expression. The localized condensations of DNA constitute chromomeres. Uncoiled structures sometimes extending from chromomeres, which form loops, is the result of discontinuities in the regular coiling of the DNA in the chromosome.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advances in Cell Biology has been initiated as a continuing, multi-volume series to report on the progress of a wide spectrum of problems of cell structure and cell function. Jn arranging these volumes individual contributors are asked not only to review the major new information, but especially to present the state of a given problem or area by discussing the current central issues, speculations, concepts, hypotheses, and technical problems. We intend, in addition, that these volumes will not be concerned with comprehensive reviews of the recent literature but will consist rather of presentations of an interpretive and integrative nature, based on selection of major research advances. It is our aim that these volumes should provide the means whereby cell biologists may keep themselves reasonably well informed about the current progress in research areas in cell biology in which they are not immediately or directly involved themselves. The articles, nevertheless, are expected to bring into focus the experimental objectives of the specialists in a given research area. D. M.P. L. G. E.M. vii Contents Contributors v Preface vii 1 1.
