Book Synopsis Kinetic Processes in Gases and Plasmas by : A Hochstim
Download or read book Kinetic Processes in Gases and Plasmas written by A Hochstim and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 473 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kinetic Processes in Gases and Plasmas provides a survey of studies on transport and chemical kinetic processes in high temperature gases and plasmas. The book is concerned with conditions produced by the interaction of an object with the atmosphere at hypersonic velocities. The text also provides a foundation for the flow field equations which include chemical reactions and other transport processes, and to present in some detail the microscopic considerations underlying these calculations. Chapters are devoted to the discussion of topics such as the molecular theory of transport equations; transport processes in ionized gases; and inelastic energy transfer processes and chemical kinetics. Aerospace engineers, physicists, chemists, and astrophysicists will find the book a good reference material.
Book Synopsis An Introduction to Plasma Physics by : W. B. Thompson
Download or read book An Introduction to Plasma Physics written by W. B. Thompson and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An Introduction to Plasma Physics, Second Edition focuses on the processes, reactions, properties, and approaches involved in plasma physics, including kinetic theory, radiation, particle motions, and oscillations. The publication first offers information on the introduction to plasma physics and basic properties of the equilibrium plasma. Discussions focus on the occurrence of plasma in nature, technological aspects of plasma physics, quasi-neutrality and plasma oscillations, transmission of electromagnetic radiation through plasma, production of plasma by shock waves, and degree of ionization in a thermal plasma. The text then ponders on arc plasma, magnetohydrodynamics, and magnetohydrodynamic stability. The manuscript takes a look at plasma dynamics and particle motions and kinetic theory of the plasma. Topics include dielectric behavior of a magnetized plasma, approximate treatment of particle orbits, formal derivation of the drifts, macroscopic effects of particle motion, consequences of the magnetic moment, and transport equations and hydrodynamics. Low-frequency oscillations of a uniform magnetized plasma, stability and perturbation theories, and approximate procedure for solving the transport equations are also discussed. The publication is a highly recommended source material for readers interested in plasma physics.

Download or read book Fusion written by Joan Lisa Bromberg and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 1982 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For more than thirty years, the prospect of unlimited fusion energy has attracted scientists and the public. Joan Lisa Bromberg's book documents the history of the American magnetic fusion reactor program. It is also a lively account that will inform interested citizens of limited technical background who are concerned with the nation's energy strategy. The book carries the story from the program's inception under the auspices of the Atomic Energy Commission in 1951 to its operations under the then-new Department of Energy in 1978. Fusion concentrates on the four federally funded laboratories where most of the money has been spent (about $2 billion so far): Oak Ridge, Los Alamos, Lawrence Livermore, and Princeton. It recounts the crucial experiments along the way - the ones that succeeded, the ones that failed, the ones that showed promise. And it explains and diagrams the various magnetic configurations and devices that were developed and tested: the stellarator, the pinch, the mirror, the tokamak. With the government and the public constantly looking over the scientists' shoulders, it is no surprise that research directions were heavily influenced by extrascientific pressures: the major decisions in fusion research have always emerged from a medley of technical, institutional, and political considerations. The intermingling of science and politics is demonstrated in specific detail. The magnetic fusion reactor project is, of course, ongoing. Latest target date for producing commercial power: 2050. Estimated total cost: $15 billion. Dr. Bromberg has written extensively on topics in the history of modern science.

Book Synopsis Engineering Magnetohydrodynamics by : George W. Sutton
Download or read book Engineering Magnetohydrodynamics written by George W. Sutton and published by Courier Dover Publications. This book was released on 2006-07-07 with total page 571 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Suitable for advanced undergraduates and graduate students in engineering, this text introduces the concepts of plasma physics and magnetohydrodynamics from a physical viewpoint. The first section of the three-part treatment deals mainly with the properties of ionized gases in magnetic and electric fields, essentially following the microscopic viewpoint. An introduction surveys the concepts of ionized gases and plasmas, together with a variety of magnetohydrodynamic regimes. A review of electromagnetic field theory follows, including motion of an individual charged particle and derivations of drift motions and adiabatic invariants. Additional topics include kinetic theory, derivation of electrical conductivity, development of statistical mechanics, radiation from plasma, and plasma wave motion. Part II addresses the macroscopic motion of electrically conducting compressible fluids: magnetohydrodynamic approximations; description of macroscopic fluid motions; magnetohydrodynamic channel flow; methods of estimating channel-flow behavior; and treatment of magnetohydrodynamic boundary layers. Part III draws upon the material developed in previous sections to explore applications of magnetohydrodynamics. The text concludes with a series of problems that reinforce the teachings of all three parts.
