Book Synopsis Toxic Chemicals in America [2 volumes] by : Kelly A. Tzoumis
Download or read book Toxic Chemicals in America [2 volumes] written by Kelly A. Tzoumis and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2020-12-02 with total page 746 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This one-stop resource is ideal for understanding the extent to which toxic chemicals are used in U.S. industry and agriculture—impacting public health and the environment through everything from industrial solvents to children's toys. Every year, about 4 billion pounds of toxic chemicals are generated and released by U.S. industries. Do these chemicals pose a potential health threat to American families, including vulnerable groups like children and the elderly? Is their manufacture and use adequately regulated to protect both human and environmental health? Is the Chemical Safety for the 21st Century Act, signed in June 2016 by President Barack Obama with bipartisan support, truly the first major overhaul of toxic chemical regulation in 40 years to put human health first, as its supporters asserted? Or is it a fatally flawed bill that does the bidding of industry by undermining strong state environmental and public health laws, as some detractors claim? This two-volume set addresses all of those questions. Moreover, it presents and examines arguments marshaled by business interests, community leaders, scientists, activists, and lawmakers alike. It thus provides users with the information they need to accurately assess the impacts—pro and con—that industrial chemicals are having in shaping the world in which we work, eat, drink, breathe, and play.

Book excerpt: A concise assessment of the risks to human health posed by exposure to azodicarbonamide, a chemical mainly used as a blowing agent in the rubber and plastics industries. The compound is used in the expansion of a wide range of polymers, including polyvinyl chloride polyolefins and natural and synthetic rubbers. Although no data on environmental levels are available, the report cites limited evidence suggesting rapid biodegradation in soil. Azodicarbonamide released to surface waters is expected to partition to the hydrosphere with no signification sorption to particulates. No data on exposure of the general population could be identified. Concerning kinetics and metabolism, limited animal studies of exposures via inhalation and ingestion indicate that substantial quantities remain unabsorbed and are rapidly eliminated in the faeces. Studies further suggest that most systemic exposure is to the breakdown product, biurea, and not to the parent compound. Toxicity studies conducted in experimental mammals demonstrate low acute toxicity and no irritation of skin, eye, or respiratory tract. Although azodicarbonamide was found to be a mutagen in bacterial systems, the report found no evidence that this effect would occur in vivo. No adequate studies of carcinogenicity and reproductive toxicity in animals or in humans could be identified. Case reports and epidemiological studies in humans have produced abundant evidence that azodicarbonamide can induce asthma, other respiratory symptoms, and skin sensitization in exposed workers. Adverse effects on other systems have not been studied.

Book excerpt: A concise assessment of the risks to human health and the environment posed by 3 3 -dichlorobenzidine, a chemical used primarily as an intermediate in the manufacture of pigments for printing inks, textiles, paints, and plastics. The document is part of a new series of brief reports aimed at the characterization of hazards and dose-response for exposure to selected industrial chemicals. With this goal in mind, documents in the series focus on studies and findings considered critical for risk characterization. Several properties of 3 3 -dichlorobenzidine, including its relatively low volatility, very short persistence, and low concentrations in the atmosphere support the conclusion that the chemical will not contribute to the greenhouse effect depletion of the ozone layer or the formation of ground-level ozone. The assessment of toxic effects in experimental animals found sufficient evidence of carcinogenicity in several species, and substantial evidence of genotoxicity. The very limited epidemiological studies were considered inadequate to access the chemical's carcinogenicity to humans."
