Book excerpt: "FAO Türkiye’s Women-led cooperatives support programme" booklet offers a multi-faceted look into the role of cooperatives in women’s economic, social, and cultural empowerment. The document is an illuminating exposition on the intersection of gender equality, sustainable development, and agricultural development cooperatives. The booklet dives into FAO's Global Strategy on Women-led Cooperatives, detailing success stories that underscore the transformative power of these cooperatives in rural Turkish communities. The narrative weaves through the framework of FAO's Strategic Objectives, demonstrating how cooperatives serve as a platform for rural women’s empowerment, offering both economic opportunities and a platform for social and cultural engagement. Furthermore, ten of these cooperatives jointly initiated the establishment of a new e-commerce platform, hepyerinden.coop, under the guidance of FAO Türkiye. Hepyerinden.coop aims to enhance market opportunities and contribute to the long-term sustainability of the cooperatives by enabling them to reach a broader customer base by digitalization. This comprehensive resource is designed to appeal to a broad audience, from global development actors to local stakeholders including policymakers, researchers, practitioners in the field of gender and agricultural development, and anyone interested in the intersection of gender equality and sustainable agriculture by illuminating the cooperative model as a force for transformative change. It serves as an educational tool, offering insights into the practical aspects of running and sustaining women-led cooperatives, while also addressing broader themes such as women's rights, economic development, and social justice in the context of Türkiye's evolving cooperative movement. Through its detailed analysis and compelling case studies, the document underscores the vital role of cooperatives in advancing gender equality and women’s empowerment in the agriculture sector.

Book excerpt: The 'Gender in Agriculture Sourcebook' provides an up-to-date understanding of gender issues and a rich compilation of compelling evidence of good practices and lessons learned to guide practitioners in integrating gender dimensions into agricultural projects and programs. It is serves as a tool for: guidance; showcasing key principles in integrating gender into projects; stimulating the imagination of practitioners to apply lessons learned, experiences, and innovations to the design of future support and investment in the agriculture sector. The Sourcebook draws on a wide range of experience from World Bank, Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), and other donor agencies, governments, institutions, and groups active in agricultural development. The Sourcebook looks at: access to and control of assets; access to markets, information and organization; and capacity to manage risk and vulnerability through a gender lens. There are 16 modules covering themes of cross-cutting importance for agriculture with strong gender dimensions (Policy, Public Administration and Governance; Agricultural Innovation and Education; Food Security; Markets; Rural Finance; Rural Infrastructure; Water; Land; Labor; Natural Resource Management; and Disaster and Post-Conflict Management) and specific subsectors in agriculture (Crops, Livestock, Forestry, and Fisheries). A separate module on Monitoring and Evaluation is included, responding to the need to track implementation and development impact. Each module contains three different sub-units: (1) A Module Overview gives a broad introduction to the topic and provides a summary of major development issues in the sector and rationale of looking at gender dimension; (2) Thematic Notes provide a brief and technically sound guide in gender integration in selected themes with lessons learned, guidelines, checklists, organizing principles, key questions, and key performance indicators; and (3) Innovative Activity Profiles describe the design and innovative features of recent and exciting projects and activities that have been implemented or are ongoing.

Book excerpt: People living in context prone to or affected by conflict suffer from many forms of deprivation. The international community plays a crucial role in strengthening the wellbeing of affected populations, including their food security. Unfortunately, quite often people exposed to conflict are not reached by national or international assistance because of targeting, accessibility, and marginalization. This can ultimately translate into a further deterioration of their food security status. This paper combines a geo-referenced household dataset collected in South Sudan in 2017 with the Armed Conflict Location and Events Data (ACLED), including information on conflict events. The collection of a very detailed household questionnaire in areas extensively affected by violence allows the analysis in a country generally unexplored by the empirical literature. We analyze the variation in conflict exposure across different households that live in the same district and we test the link between conflict exposure and humanitarian assistance. We find that those who live in the higher-intensity conflict areas, received less assistance than those less exposed to the conflict. The association is stronger with in kind provision of inputs for agriculture and livestock rather than for direct food assistance. We suggest the presence of social elites and marginalization as a possible explanation. We discuss the advantages of using cash transfers through mobile phones to normatively decided beneficiaries; evidence also supports interventions combining input distribution and markets’ rehabilitation. More evidence is needed on the modalities of delivery of humanitarian assistance in different food crises contexts.

Book excerpt: Reluctant Partners? combines comprehensive empirical insights into NGOs' work in agriculture with wider considerations of their relations with the State and their contribution to democratic pluralism. This overview volume for the Non-Governmental Organizations series contextualizes and synthesizes the case study material in the three regional volumes on Africa, Asia and Latin America, where over sixty specially commissioned case studies of farmer-participatory approaches to agricultural innovation are presented. Specific questions are raised. How good/bad are NGOs at promoting technological innovation and addressing contraints to change in peasant culture? How effective are NGOs at strengthening local organizations? How do/will donor pressures influence NGOs and their links to the State?

Book excerpt: Under its CFS RAI Umbrella Programme, FAO is strengthening the capacities of Liberian state and non-state actors to enhance the enabling environment for responsible investment in agriculture and food systems. This includes the present baseline study, drafted by ZOA with support from FAO; the delivery of blended learning programmes for policymakers; capacity development activities for civil society; and multi-stakeholder policy dialogue which is expected to result in concrete policy recommendations. These activities are carried out under the inter-regional project “Enhancing the enabling environment for responsible investment in agriculture and food systems” (GCP/INT/920/GER), which is funded by Germany. The project operates at global, regional, and country levels (Lao PDR, Liberia, and Sierra Leone).

Book excerpt: The following collection of notes was initially disseminated at the “Private Sector Forum on Food Security in the Southern and Eastern Mediterranean Region” jointly organized by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM) in May 2015. The notes aim to inform EBRD agribusiness investments in the SEMED and disseminate knowledge on current trends in agribusiness and food security. The EBRD called upon FAO’s technical assistance to carry out an analysis of key trends in the agribusiness sector of four specific countries: Egypt, Morocco, Tunisia and Jordan. This process resulted in four country notes with analyses of food consumption patterns, production and trade, as well as agricultural policies. While the individual notes were mostly descriptive, it was felt that a document providing a comparative analysis across countries would add value to the target audience, namely public officials, development experts, the private sector and members of the civil society. This publication thus sought to reframe the analysis of sector trends in the region into a readily-accessible format in order to contribute to more effective and efficient policies for improved food security and nutrition. While the focus of the publication is on four SEMED countries – Egypt, Morocco, Tunisia and Jordan - many of its key findings and conclusions will also be of interest in other regional and country situations, where FAO and the UfM are active.
