Book Synopsis The Tribological and Structural Behavior of Untextured and Textured Plain Bearings by : Nadia Bendaoud
Download or read book The Tribological and Structural Behavior of Untextured and Textured Plain Bearings written by Nadia Bendaoud and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2022-12-13 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hydrodynamic bearings and aerodynamic bearings are components which ensure the guiding of rotating machines, such as turbines and reactors. This equipment operates under very severe operating conditions, with a high rotational speed and high radial load. In order to improve the hydrodynamic performance of these rotating machines, manufacturers specializing in the manufacture of hydrodynamic plain bearings have designed a bearing model with its textured interior surface. This book provides a numerical analysis carried out to observe the effect of a turbulent fluid flow in a non-textured and textured plain bearing and to see the improvement in hydrodynamic and tribological performance on both un-textured and textured surfaces of plain bearings, under severe operating parameters. It also presents an analysis of the structural behavior of a hydrodynamic and aerodynamic bearing with a non-textured and textured surface.

Book Synopsis Advanced Surface Coating Techniques for Modern Industrial Applications by : Roy, Supriyo
Download or read book Advanced Surface Coating Techniques for Modern Industrial Applications written by Roy, Supriyo and published by IGI Global. This book was released on 2020-09-18 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In engineering, there are often situations in which the material of the main component is unable to sustain long life or protect itself from adverse operating environments. Moreover, in some cases, different material properties such as anti-friction and wear, anti-corrosive, thermal resistive, super hydrophobic, etc. are required as per the operating conditions. If those bulk components are made of such materials and possess those properties, the cost will be very high. In such cases, a practical solution is surface coating, which serves as a protective barrier to the bulk material from the adverse environment. In the last decade, with enormous effort, researchers and scientists have developed suitable materials to overcome those unfavorable operating conditions, and they have used advanced deposition techniques to enhance the adhesion and surface texturing of the coatings. Advanced Surface Coating Techniques for Modern Industrial Applications is a highly sought reference source that compiles the recent research trends in these new and emerging surface coating materials, deposition techniques, properties of coated materials, and their applications in various engineering and industrial fields. The book particularly focuses on 1) coating materials including anti-corrosive materials and nanomaterials, 2) coating methods including thermal spray and electroless disposition, and 3) applications such as surface engineering and thin film application. The book is ideal for engineers, scientists, researchers, academicians, and students working in fields like material science, mechanical engineering, tribology, chemical and corrosion science, bio-medical engineering, biomaterials, and aerospace engineering.

Book Synopsis In Defense of Disciplines by : Jerry A. Jacobs
Download or read book In Defense of Disciplines written by Jerry A. Jacobs and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2014-02-05 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Calls for closer connections among disciplines can be heard throughout the world of scholarly research, from major universities to the National Institutes of Health. In Defense of Disciplines presents a fresh and daring analysis of the argument surrounding interdisciplinarity. Challenging the belief that blurring the boundaries between traditional academic fields promotes more integrated research and effective teaching, Jerry Jacobs contends that the promise of interdisciplinarity is illusory and that critiques of established disciplines are often overstated and misplaced. Drawing on diverse sources of data, Jacobs offers a new theory of liberal arts disciplines such as biology, economics, and history that identifies the organizational sources of their dynamism and breadth. Illustrating his thesis with a wide range of case studies including the diffusion of ideas between fields, the creation of interdisciplinary scholarly journals, and the rise of new fields that spin off from existing ones, Jacobs turns many of the criticisms of disciplines on their heads to mount a powerful defense of the enduring value of liberal arts disciplines. This will become one of the anchors of the case against interdisciplinarity for years to come.
Download or read book Biotribology written by J. Paulo Davim and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2013-03-04 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tribology is the “science and technology of interacting surfaces in relative motion” and encompasses the study of friction, wear and lubrication. By extension biotribology is usually defined as the tribological phenomena occurring in either the human body or in animals. Therefore, it is possible to consider tribological processes that may occur after implantation of an artificial device in the human body and the tribological processes naturally occurring in or on the tissues and organ of animals. Animals, including humans, possess a wide variety of sliding and frictional interfaces. The authors aim to provide some advances in research in biotribology. They cover several aspects of biotribology such as tribology of synovial joints and artificial replacements; wear of screws and plates in bone fractures repair; wear of denture and restorative materials; friction of the skin and comfort of clothing; wear of replacement heart valves; tribology of contact lenses and ocular tribology; biotribology on the microscale and nanoscale levels, etc. This book can be used as a research text for final undergraduate engineering courses (for example, materials, biomedical, etc.) or for those studying the subject of biotribology at the postgraduate level. It can also serve as a useful reference for academics, biomechanical researchers, biologists, chemists, physicists, biomedicals and materials engineers, and other professionals in related engineering, medicine and biomedical industries.
