Book excerpt: The International Handbook of Psychology is an authoritative resource covering all the main areas of psychological science and written by an outstanding set of authors from around the world. The 31 chapters cover not only scientific but also applied cross-disciplinary aspects. Supervised by an International Editorial Advisory Board (IEAB) of 13 eminent psychologists and edited by Professors Kurt Pawlik and Mark R Rosenzweig, it is being published under the auspices of the International Union of Psychological Science (IUPsyS) by SAGE Publications Ltd in London. The International Handbook of Psychology will be invaluable to advanced undergraduates, graduate students and academics in psychology, and will also be of interest to students of education, sociology, political science, humanities, philosophy, informatics, cognitive sciences, neuroscience, legal sciences and criminology, and will serve as a general resource reference text, written at a level comparable to Scientific American. `This impressive volume covers a tremendous amount of work. It is well organized: authors have generally kept to a standard brief. It is also truly international both in authorship and the origin of the work referenced. This will provide a very useful reference book for undergraduate and post-graduate students′ - British Journal of Educational Psychology

Book excerpt: It gives me immense pleasure to welcome all to explore/publish/ comment in/on our journal, The International Journal of Indian Psychology (IJIP). There are a lot of challenges which the growing psychological face in the realms of basic necessities in life. Psychological thoughts can play a very distinct role in bringing about this change. One of the key objectives of research should be its usability and application. This journal attempts to document and spark a debate on the research focused on psychological research and ideas in context of emerging geographies. The sectors could range from psychological education and improvement, mental health, environmental issues and solution, health care and medicine and psychological related areas. The key focus would however be the emerging sectors and research which discusses application and usability in social or health context. We intended to publish case reports, review articles, with main focus on original research articles. Over objective is to reach all the psychological practitioners, who have knowledge and interest but have no time to record the interesting cases, research activities and new innovative procedures which helps us in updating our knowledge and improving our treatment. Finally, I would like to thank RED’SHINE International Publications, Inc for this keepsake, and my editorial team, technical team, authors and well wishers, who are promoting this journals. With these words, I conclude and promise that the standards policies will be maintained. We hope that the research featured here sets up many new milestones. I look forward to make this endeavour very meaningful.

Book excerpt: This special issue of the International Journal of Psychology had its origins in the Quebec 98 Conference on Short-Term Memory, held in Quebec City, Canada, in June 1998. Following this conference, participants were invited to submit contributions based on, and expanding upon, their presentation at this conference. The enthusiastic response made it possible to collect the exciting selection of articles that you will find herein. It must be noted that because of the finite journal space available, the editors and reviewers were faced with the difficult problem of selecting only a limited number of the excellent articles that were submitted. The outcome of this process is this special issue, which we believe provides an up-to-date overview of current research on short-term/working memory, including the challenges, controversies, and recent theoretical advances in this field.

It is based on laboratory research and in conceptualizations from distinguished figures of the discipline, such as Skinner, Pavlov, Mach, and even Watson and Thorndike. It has generated a science (the experimental analysis of behaviour), a philosophy (behaviourism), and numerous practical applications (applied behaviour analysis). For several decades it was even considered to be the dominant paradigm in psychology. This special issue contains scientific articles in the main areas of behaviour analysis, both as a laboratory science and as an applied discipline. It covers representative research and applications of behaviour analysis at the beginning of the 21st century. The authors come from countries including the United States, China, Mexico, Spain, Belgium, France, Switzerland, Belgium, Colombia, Poland, Greece. This special issue is an indication of the international relevance of this area of psychology, and its current state.

Book excerpt: Complex Trauma Syndrome covers over a decade of research and clinical experience of complex psychological trauma. This book provides a concept: a practical framework and therapy model in treating complex trauma syndrome. The heart of this book is made up of the practical steps of using the Dynamic Therapy Model of which the author is a founder. This is a patient-oriented, holotropic and phased-therapy model designed to integrate the shattered personality caused by diverse, long-lasting, and pervasive effects of the psychological trauma. Dr Zepinic defines complex trauma syndrome as involving traumatic events that (1) are repetitive and prolonged; (2) have involved direct harm and/or direct threat to the trauma victim; (3) occur at a vulnerable time in the victim's life; and (4) have a severe impact upon the victim's entire life and personality, causing social and cognitive dysfunctions. This book not only covers unique matters of clinical expertise in research and therapy of the complex trauma syndrome, but also provides a guideline in treating other complex mental health disorders. Multimodal and phase-oriented treatments of complex mental health disorders, as described in this book, are practical guidelines to those professionals who are dealing with mental health issues.

This book was released on 2005-08-18 with total page 451 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes the present status and the history of the International Union of Psychological Science (IUPsyS) -- the most representative international psychological body. The IUPsyS includes national psychological associations from 66 countries, with more joining every year, and it has formal relations with the United Nations, UNESCO, the World Health Organization, the International Council for Science, and the International Social Science Council. Many well known psychologists have played important roles in this international organization, and the text and many photographs bring the story to life. IUPsyS was organized formally at the 14th international Congress of Psychology at Stockholm in 1951, so the 27th International Congress of Psychology at Stockholm in 2000 marks a half-century of its existence. But the history of the IUPsyS goes back to the first International Congresses of Psychology, 1889, and to the International Congress Committee which foreshadowed the organization of the International Union. After describing the present status of the IUPsyS in Chapter 1, the book traces briefly the early development of scientific societies and organizations. Chapter 3 tells how the first International Congress of Psychology was organized in Paris in 1889 and what it accomplished. Successive international congresses and the growth of psychology during the next sixty years are treated in chapters 4-6. The founding and development of the International Union in the last half of the 20th Century are described in the remaining chapters. International Congresses organized by the IUPsyS have taken place regularly since 1951, and the IUPsyS has steadily gained in the scope and influence of its activities. The congresses, long restricted to western Europe and North America, became more representative geographically, moving to Moscow, Tokyo, Leipzig, Acapulco, and Sydney, with the 28th congress planned for Beijing in 2004. The history shows how the IUPsyS has become increasingly able to face the problems and opportunities of the 21st century.
