Book excerpt: This book contains papers presented at the International Symposium on Elect- magnetic Fields in Mechatronics, Electrical and Electronic Engineering ISEF’07 which was held in Prague, the Czech Republic, from September 13 to 15, 2007. ISEF conferences have been organized since 1985 and from the very beginning it was a common initiative of Polish and other European researchers who have dealt with electromagnetic ?eld in electrical engineering. The conference travels through Europe and is organized in various academic centres. Relatively often, it was held in some Polish city as the initiative was on the part of Polish scientists. Now ISEF is much more international and successive events take place in different European academic centres renowned for electromagnetic research. This time it was Prague, famous for its beauty and historical background, as it is the place where many c- tures mingle. The venue of the conference was the historical building of Charles University, placed just in the centre of Prague. The Technical University of Prague, in turn, constituted the logistic centre of the conference. It is the tradition of the ISEF meetings that they try to tackle quite a vast area of computational and applied electromagnetics. Moreover, the ISEF symposia aim at combining theory and practice; therefore the majority of papers are deeply rooted in engineering problems, being simultaneously of a high theoretical level.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Computational intelligence is a component of Encyclopedia of Technology, Information, and Systems Management Resources in the global Encyclopedia of Life Support Systems (EOLSS), which is an integrated compendium of twenty one Encyclopedias. Computational intelligence is a rapidly growing research field including a wide variety of problem-solving techniques inspired by nature. Traditionally computational intelligence consists of three major research areas: Neural Networks, Fuzzy Systems, and Evolutionary Computation. Neural networks are mathematical models inspired by brains. Neural networks have massively parallel network structures with many neurons and weighted connections. Whereas each neuron has a simple input-output relation, a neural network with many neurons can realize a highly non-linear complicated mapping. Connection weights between neurons can be adjusted in an automated manner by a learning algorithm to realize a non-linear mapping required in a particular application task. Fuzzy systems are mathematical models proposed to handle inherent fuzziness in natural language. For example, it is very difficult to mathematically define the meaning of “cold” in everyday conversations such as “It is cold today” and “Can I have cold water”. The meaning of “cold” may be different in a different situation. Even in the same situation, a different person may have a different meaning. Fuzzy systems offer a mathematical mechanism to handle inherent fuzziness in natural language. As a result, fuzzy systems have been successfully applied to real-world problems by extracting linguistic knowledge from human experts in the form of fuzzy IF-THEN rules. Evolutionary computation includes various population-based search algorithms inspired by evolution in nature. Those algorithms usually have the following three mechanisms: fitness evaluation to measure the quality of each solution, selection to choose good solutions from the current population, and variation operators to generate offspring from parents. Evolutionary computation has high applicability to a wide range of optimization problems with different characteristics since it does not need any explicit mathematical formulations of objective functions. For example, simulation-based fitness evaluation is often used in evolutionary design. Subjective fitness evaluation by a human user is also often used in evolutionary art and music. These volumes are aimed at the following five major target audiences: University and College students Educators, Professional practitioners, Research personnel and Policy analysts, managers, and decision makers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The concept of CAST as Computer Aided Systems Theory, was introduced by F. Pichler of Linz in the late 80’s to include those computer theoretical and practical developments as tools to solve problems in System Science. It was considered as the third component (the other two being CAD and CAM) that will provide for a complete picture of the path from Computer and Systems Sciences to practical developments in Science and Engineering. The University of Linz organized the ?rst CAST workshop in April 1988, which demonstrated the acceptance of the concepts by the scienti?c and technical community. Next, the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria joined the University of Linz to organize the ?rst international meeting on CAST, (Las Palmas February 1989), under the name EUROCAST’89, that was a very successful gathering of systems theorists, computer scientists and engineers from most of European countries, North America and Japan. ItwasagreedthatEUROCASTinternationalconferenceswouldbeorganized every two years. Thus, the following EUROCAST meetings took place in Krems (1991), Las Palmas (1993), Innsbruck (1995), Las Palmas (1997), Vienna (1999) and Las Palmas(2001), in addition to an extra-European CAST Conference in Ottawain1994.SelectedpapersfromthosemeetingswerepublishedbySpringer- Verlag Lecture Notes in Computer Science nos. 410, 585, 763, 1030, 1333, 1728 and 2178 and in several special issues of Cybernetics and Systems: an lnternat- nal Journal. EUROCAST and CAST meetings are de?nitely consolidated, as it is demonstrated by the number and quality of the contributions over the years.

Book excerpt: This unique volume is the first publication on software engineering and computational intelligence (CI) viewed as a synergistic interplay of neurocomputing, granular computation (including fuzzy sets and rough sets), and evolutionary methods. It presents a unified view of CI in the context of software engineering. The book addresses a number of crucial issues: what is CI, what role does it play in software development, how are CI elements built into successive phases of the software life cycle, and what is the role played by CI in quantifying fundamental features of software artifacts? With contributions from leading researchers and practitioners, the book provides the reader with a wealth of new concepts and approaches, complete algorithms, in-depth case studies, and thought-provoking exercises. The topics coverage include neurocomputing, granular as well as evolutionary computing, object-oriented analysis and design in software engineering. There is also an extensive bibliography.

Book excerpt: This book comprises a selection of extended abstracts and papers presented at the EVOLVE 2012 held in Mexico City, Mexico. The aim of the EVOLVE is to build a bridge between probability, set oriented numerics, and evolutionary computation as to identify new common and challenging research aspects. The conference is also intended to foster a growing interest for robust and efficient methods with a sound theoretical background. EVOLVE aims to unify theory-inspired methods and cutting-edge techniques ensuring performance guarantee factors. By gathering researchers with different backgrounds, a unified view and vocabulary can emerge where the theoretical advancements may echo in different domains. Summarizing, the EVOLVE conference focuses on challenging aspects arising at the passage from theory to new paradigms and aims to provide a unified view while raising questions related to reliability, performance guarantees, and modeling. The extended papers of the EVOLVE 2012 make a contribution to this goal.
