It extends from disciplines of geophysics and astrophysics through chemistry and physics to those of modern biology, electrical and chemical engineering. This breadth has been recognized for some time, but it was not until the early 1960's that an international group of scientists and engineers established the Association Internationale for Research and Advancement of High Pressure Science and Technology (AIRAPT) for bringing these various aspects of high pressure together at an international conference. The First AIRAPT International High Pressure Conference was held in 1965 in France and has been convened at approximately two to three year intervals since that time. The past four AIRAPT International High Pressure Conferences have been held in Germany, Scotland, Japan and the U.S.S.R. Since the first meeting of this kind, our understanding of high pressure behavior of physical systems has increased greatly.

The high pressure technique has become a powerful tool for both the study and preparation of materials. In spi. te of the many high pressure conferences held in recent years, I felt that there was a need for scientists within a well-defined area (not bound merely by the common experimental technique) to meet in an atmosphere conducive to frank exchange and close interaction. In this spirit, the Cleveland State University hosted such a conference from July 20 to 22, 1977, in which the physics of solids under high pressures and at low tempera tures was specifically examined. Both the original and review papers presented at the conference and the candid discussions following their presentations appear in this volume. They clearly cover a rather complete spectrum of current research in the physics of solids at high pressures and low temperatures. I wish to thank the National Aeronautics and Space Administra tion, the Office of Naval Research and the National Science Founda tion for their financial support of the conference. It was intended that the summer school should devote itself exclusively to the description and discussion of the effects of pressure in chemistry. Besides typical effects on matter, the application of high pressure techniques to existing research methods were to be treated, as well as pressure effects on reaction rates and equilibria. According to the concept of the Advanced Study Institute Program, the Summer School proceedings were meant to be a high level teaching activity. It was emphasized that the contributions should have the character of surveys rather than of highly specialized reports on recent research results. NOw, following the successful completion of the summer school, which involved very close cooperation with my colleagues during its preparation, it is my sincere wish to thank all the lecturers and contributors to this volume for the extreme care they used in preparing the lectures and manuscripts. I am especially grateful to the members of the organizing committee for their valuable assistance. This book is not an introduction to the dynamic behavior of materials, and general information available in other books is not included. The material herein is presented in a form I hope will make it useful not only for researchers working in related areas, but also for graduate students. I used it successfully to teach a course on the dynamic behavior of materials at the University of California, San Diego. Another course well suited to the topic may be nonlinear wave dynamics in solids, especially the part on strongly nonlinear waves. About 100 problems presented in the book at the end of each chapter will help the reader to develop a deeper understanding of the subject. I tried to follow a few rules in writing this book: (1) To focus on strongly nonlinear phenomena where there is no small parameter with respect to the amplitude of disturbance, including solitons, shock waves, and localized shear. (2) To take into account phenomena sensitive to materials structure, where typical space scale of material parameters (particle size, cell size) are presented in the models or are variable in experimental research.
