This book was released on 1993 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report summarizes the papers and associated discussion presented at the Senior Policy Seminar held in Santiago, Chile between 25th and 28th of May, 1992. The seminar involved ministers, central bank governors and senior officials from several Latin American and Asian economies as well as several representatives of international organizations. The central purpose of the seminar was to comparatively assess the wide range of country experiences with financial reform in the two regions, with a view to distilling general lessons. The materials presented were oriented mainly around the diverse experiences of financial policy formulation and implementation during the 1980s and early 1990s. These materials supported discussion of a variety of subthemes, including the management of financial crises, the interaction of financial liberalization with more general economic reforms, the industrial policy aspects of financial reform, and the roles of governments in stimulating the development of specific types of financial markets and institutions. The presentation during the four days included country papers as well as a variety of more general and synoptic papers included in this publication.
Book Synopsis Global Shock, Risks, and Asian Financial Reform by : Iwan Jaya Azis
Download or read book Global Shock, Risks, and Asian Financial Reform written by Iwan Jaya Azis and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The growth of financial markets has clearly outpaced the development of financial market regulations. With growing complexity in the world of finance and the resultant higher frequency of financial crises, all eyes have shifted toward the current inadequacy of financial regulation. This book expertly examines what this episode means for Asia's financial sector and its stability, and what the implications will be for the region's financial regulation. By focusing on legal and institutional frameworks the book also elaborates on various issues and challenges in terms of how financial liberalization can maximize the benefits and minimize the risks of crisis.
Book Synopsis Liberalization, Growth, and the Asian Financial Crisis by : Mohamed Ariff
Download or read book Liberalization, Growth, and the Asian Financial Crisis written by Mohamed Ariff and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2000 with total page 552 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ariff (finance, Monash U., Australia) and Khalid (economics, National U. of Singapore) examine the effects of financial deregulation in the more advanced economies of southeastern Asia, and analyze the degree to which emerging and transitional economies of the region can benefit from their example. The currency crisis they attribute to simple weaknesses of the banking sector, and point out policies to avoid a similar episode in the future. Documenting the individual steps taken to deregulate the economies over a period of about two or three decades in several countries, they reveal that those countries that adopted such policies were rewarded with high growth and those unwilling to do so suffered poor growth and hence low social development. Therefore, they conclude, deregulation could not have led to the financial crisis, as so many have mistakenly suspected, and vulnerable poor countries should not hesitate to embrace it. Book Synopsis An Opportunity for a Different Peru by : Marcelo Giugale
Download or read book An Opportunity for a Different Peru written by Marcelo Giugale and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2007 with total page 860 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the first time in the republican history of Peru, the presidential transition takes place in democracy, social peace, fast economic growth and favorable world markets. In other words, there has never been a better chance to build a different Peru - a richer country, more equal and governable. There are multiple ways to achieve that goal. New reforms must stem from a widespread and participatory debate, one of a common vision conceived for and by Peruvians. This book aims at making a technical and independent contribution to such debate; it summarizes the knowledge available about the challenges to be faced by the new administration. The study does not recommend silver bullets, but suggests policy options. It is based on the analysis of the current reality and in six decades of relationships with Peru, in which the Bank has implemented more than 100 projects and prepared more than 500 technical reports covering the wide range of development topics. When necessary, the study provides lessons that the Bank has learned elsewhere. The study provides a conceptual framework to the analysis of the country's 34 economic sectors and the two historical perspectives behind them. In doing so, it offers a comprehensive reform agenda that sheds light on possible priorities and courses of action.
Book Synopsis Ensuring Quality to Gain Access to Global Markets by : Martin Kellermann
Download or read book Ensuring Quality to Gain Access to Global Markets written by Martin Kellermann and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2019-04-09 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a modern world with rapidly growing international trade, countries compete less based on the availability of natural resources, geographical advantages, and lower labor costs and more on factors related to firms' ability to enter and compete in new markets. One such factor is the ability to demonstrate the quality and safety of goods and services expected by consumers and confirm compliance with international standards. To assure such compliance, a sound quality infrastructure (QI) ecosystem is essential. Jointly developed by the World Bank Group and the National Metrology Institute of Germany, this guide is designed to help development partners and governments analyze a country's quality infrastructure ecosystems and provide recommendations to design and implement reforms and enhance the capacity of their QI institutions.
