Book Synopsis Drugs and Money by : Robert E. Grosse
Download or read book Drugs and Money written by Robert E. Grosse and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2001-03-30 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Money laundering has been around as long as there have been illicit businesses, since criminals have always had to convert their ill-gotten gains into clean financial instruments in order to utilize them in legitimate business. Grosse explores how drug traffickers turn profits from street sales of cocaine and crack into bank accounts, airplanes, securities investments, and other uses. These schemes are both creative and extensive, from shipping suitcases of dollars to Mexico, to buying gold with drug cash in California, to faking the export of clothing from Colombia to Panama. The amounts of money involved are often staggering--hundreds of millions of dollars in most cases. Grosse also considers some of the issues raised by money laundering. He offers advice to banks and other financial institutions that hope to avoid becoming involved in a money laundering process. He examines the social costs and benefits of money laundering, in particular the charge that the rapid development of Miami in the 1980s was due directly to the hundreds of millions of cocaine dollars invested in real estate and businesses by the cocaine cowboys. Increasing law enforcement has, in Grosse's opinion, only resulted in more clever laundering schemes, and recent discussion about legalizing narcotics will prove even more costly for the United States.

Download or read book Drugs and Money written by Michael Levi and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2005-07-15 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The phenomenon of psycho-active drugs, and our reactions to them, is one of the most fascinating topics of the social history of mankind. Starting with an analysis of the 'policy of fear' in which law enforcement is 'haunted' by drug money, Drugs and Money offers a radical reconsideration of this highly contentious issue. In this intriguing book, Petrus C. van Duyne and Michael Levi expose an ever-unfolding series of problems: the proliferation of mind-influencing substances the complications of international drug regulation the interaction between markets and economic actors, with the consequent amassing of huge amounts of crime-money. The social, cultural and economic aspects of this crime-money are explored, alongside the ongoing threat it poses to the legitimate economy and the state.

This book was released on 2001-02-05 with total page 9 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The global explosion of organized crime over the past two decades has lent urgency to the need for anti-money laundering initiatives as part of a concerted campaign to combat international crime. This study outlines the evolution of anti-money laundering initiatives as an international tool to combat organized crime in several arenas, including narcotic trafficking, terrorism, arms dealing, kidnapping, disabling of government programs through extortion and corruption and the penetration by criminal groups into legitimate financial systems. It reviews the legislative and regulatory programs implemented by various nations in their efforts to fight organized crime. Other aspects discussed include the "extraterritorial reach" (international reach) of the US money laundering laws, the principal alternative remittance systems used by international drug traffickers to launder billions of dollars in drug proceeds, and some identified money laundering schemes actively used in the world of international finance. For effective anti-money laundering initiatives, it is imperative to pass laws prohibiting the laundering of the proceeds of crime and the concealment of assets acquired through international criminal activity, and also to enact strict regulatory requirements for financial institutions to report suspected criminal activity as well as extraordinary and dubious financial transactions. Additionally, the development and structuring of a national Financial Investigation (or Intelligence) Unit (FIU) is an essential element for success. The FIU will undertake the task of monitoring reports and financial intelligence while managing financial information consistent with the country's privacy and regulatory protocols. At the regulatory level, the study suggests several practical measures that will enable financial institutions to protect themselves from penetration and utilization by criminal organizations for money laundering purposes. In particular, emphasis is placed on the Financial Action Task Force's list of recommendations for the development of sound anti-money laundering programs.

Book excerpt: Responding to Money Laundering has its origin in the International Conference on Preventing and Controlling Money Laundering and the Use of Proceeds of Crime: A Global Approach organised by ISPAC, the International Scientific and Advisory Board of the United Nations in co-operation with the Crime and Justice Branch of the United Nations under the auspices of the Italian Government. This conference has been a milestone in the recent international debate on money laundering. Some of the main papers presented are substantially revised and collected in this book making a major contribution to the development of expertise in the field. Divided into two sections -- "Trends and Implications" and "Tuning the Instruments" -- the chapters develop an analysis of the different aspects of the money laundering problem and attempt to tune the instruments for combating them. Globalization of the problem calls for globalization of the responses. By presenting a wide range of different approaches and
