Book excerpt: XXIIIrd International Congress of Pure and Applied Chemistry, Volume 7 contains the lectures presented at the 23rd International Congress of Pure and Applied Chemistry, held at Boston, USA in July 1971. This volume is organized into two parts. The first part presents papers discussing structure determination by the use of spectroscopy. Topics covered under this section include ion cyclotron resonance, some aspects of photoelectron spectroscopy, and the LASER-Raman spectroscopy of biological macromolecules. The second part provides the advances in conformational analysis. This section considers the study of small model molecules by NMR, the conformational analysis of polymers and their model compounds using spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and energy calculations, and the theoretical and experimental studies which are being carried out to determine the factors which affect the folding of polypeptide chains in proteins. Chemists will find this text highly invaluable and insightful.

Book excerpt: 25th International Congress of Pure and Applied Chemistry presents a compilation of papers covering a wide range of topics on applied and pure chemistry. This book discusses the challenges in the field of aromatic photosubstitution. Organized into six chapters, this book begins with an overview of the diverse reactions of aromatic molecules. This text then examines the pattern of specific RNA found in the human tumors, which showed a notable concordance with the predictions deducible from the animal system. Other chapters consider the methods of estimation of chemical fuels and describe the greenhouse effect arising from the burning of coal. This book presents as well an assessment of some features of the impact of quantum mechanics on chemistry. The final chapter deals with molecular beam and spectroscopic methods that allow a detailed investigation of several dynamical properties of single reactive collisions. This book is a valuable resource for chemists, theoreticians, research workers, and scientists.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anomalous electron-spin state populations in the Electron Paramagnetic Re sonance (EPR) spectra of radicals formed during radio lysis experiments were observed in 1963 by FESSENDEN and SCHULER [170a]. This phenomenon did not receive much attention at the time. In 1967, BARGON, FISCHER, and JOHNSEN [5] and independently WARD and LAWLER [7,8] reported a similar phenomenon for Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectra taken during radical reactions: emission or enhanced absorption, or both. The earliest attempts to explain this new NMR phenomenon treated these effects in a way similar to that of Dynamic Nuclear Polarization (DNP) or the Overhauser effect. Although the polarization has a completely different origin, DNP gave its name to this effect: Chemically Induced Dynamic Nuclear Polariza tion (CIDNP). [The name Chemically Induced Dynamic Electron Polarization (CIDEP) was introduced later by analogy with CIDNP]. After the initial publica tions, all the new data demonstrated that the first theory could not be correct. In 1969, a new theory was proposed by CLOSS [18] and independently by KAPTEIN and OOSTERHOFF [23] and called the radical-pair theory. This mechanism was proposed to account for the observations of polarization in both NMR and EPR. The radical-pair theory is based on weak interactions in a pair of radicals: the strength of interaction between the electronic states of the radicals depends in particular on the nuclear-spin states.

This Specialist Periodical Report reflects the growing volume of published work involving NMR techniques and applications, in particular NMR of natural macromolecules which is covered in two reports: "NMR of Proteins and Acids" and "NMR of Carbohydrates, Lipids and Membranes". For those wanting to become rapidly acquainted with specific areas of NMR, this title provides unrivalled scope of coverage. Seasoned practitioners of NMR will find this an in valuable source of current methods and applications. Specialist Periodical Reports provide systematic and detailed review coverage in major areas of chemical research. Compiled by teams of leading authorities in the relevant subject areas, the series creates a unique service for the active research chemist, with regular, in-depth accounts of progress in particular fields of chemistry. Subject coverage within different volumes of a given title is similar and publication is on an annual or biennial basis.

Book Synopsis Pyrolytic Methods in Organic Chemistry by : Roger Brown
Download or read book Pyrolytic Methods in Organic Chemistry written by Roger Brown and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pyrolytic Methods in Organic Chemistry: Application of Flow and Flash Vacuum Pyrolytic Techniques is concerned with the use of flow pyrolysis and flash vacuum pyrolysis in preparative organic chemistry. Topics covered include pyrolytic generation and reactions of free radicals, arynes, and cyclobutadienes; elimination reactions; rearrangements of carbenes and nitrenes in the gas phase; and fragmentation of cyclic and acyclic structures. Examples of the types of reaction for which flow and flash pyrolytic methods are well suited are provided. This book is comprised of nine chapters and begins by discussing the place of flow and flash vacuum pyrolytic methods in organic chemistry. The next chapter gives an account of apparatus and experimental methods, while the remaining chapters focus on pyrolytic reactions that are grouped together according to the nature of the overall process, the formal structure of the starting material, and mechanistic type. Reactions that are formally related because they involve elimination of a small fragment molecule X-X or X-Y from a larger molecular framework are examined, along with cleavage of carbocyclic systems. The final chapter presents examples of high-temperature rearrangements, focusing on electrocyclic reactions and cycloadditions involving mainly four or six electrons; reactions that proceed through diradical intermediates; and isomerizations of heterocyclic rings. This monograph is intended mainly for practicing academic and industrial organic chemists and for advanced and graduate students.
