Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Because of the magnificent response to the call for papers for the 7th International Biodeterioration Symposium held at Cambridge, UK, some difficulties have been experienced in the editing of these proceedings. The numbers of papers submitted exceeded expectation and because of this it has been necessary to accommodate those not actually in the proceedings into the International Biodeterioration journal. A small number of papers were not suitable for publication and were therefore eliminated. Many authors disregarded the guidelines laid down for the length of submitted papers. However, every attempt has been made to accommodate the maximum number of contributions in the proceedings. The original selection included those which most nearly conformed to the length requirement. Even so this has meant, in many cases, cutting down the text, eliminating tables and/or illustrations and pruning the reference list. When references have been trimmed a note has been included to the effect that an extended list may be obtained from the author/senior author. Where it was not possible to carry out these procedures without seriously altering the text and the import of the paper they have been included amongst those to be published in the journal International Biodeterioration. The exceptions to the procedures outlined above are the invited review papers which have been presented in full. Happily, the authors have been conscientious in keeping to the guidelines laid down for these contributions.

Book Synopsis Marine Biodeterioration: An Interdisciplinary Study by : J.D. Costlaw
Download or read book Marine Biodeterioration: An Interdisciplinary Study written by J.D. Costlaw and published by Springer. This book was released on 1984-06-07 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biodeterioration held April 20-23, 1981, at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences, Bethesda, Maryland. The symposium was sponsored by the Office of Naval Research to provide an organized forum for the discussion of progress in basic and applied research con cerning marine biodeterioration. The symposium was structured to cover interdisciplinary topics of interest both to the basic research community and the applied science and engineering communities. In each major topic area, a comprehensive overview paper summarizing highlights of the past two decades of research is followed by current technical papers concerning both basic and applied re search. Authors were urged to provide extensive refer ences, and their papers were subjected to external peer review. In some respects, the symposium was structured to pro vide a reference tool for the marine engineering com munity that would supplement the excellent monograph entitled "Marine Fouling and Its Prevention" prepared for the U.S. Navy Bureau of Ships in 1952 by the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. While these proceedings can not begin to update that work, they can, by presenting the in research direction, recent workers in the field, changes ac and current references, give the interdisciplinary user cess to the current literature in key topic areas.

Book excerpt: This book contains the proceedings of a symposium on freshwater and marine algal biofouling sponsored by the Phycological Society of America in conjunction with the American Institute of Biological Sciences (AIBS). The book brings together for the first time, a selection of contributions reflecting current research in this field. The book is primarily directed to researchers at all levels in the field of freshwater and marine algal biofouling, and is intended to provide the basis for the development of a greater awareness between the work of the two groups, to their mutual benefit. Knowledge of the common ground and underlying similarities should also be beneficial to workers in both fields. Each chapter is self-contained, with its own list of references etc., and several chapters are extensively illustrated with original high-quality photographs and micrographs. The volume is also indexed.

Book Synopsis Biodeterioration of Concrete by : Thomas Dyer
Download or read book Biodeterioration of Concrete written by Thomas Dyer and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2017-07-12 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Awareness of the importance of ensuring durability of concrete has been a growing concern of engineers, and there is now considerable understanding of the mechanisms, which cause its deterioration, and means of limiting such damage through the use of appropriate materials and approaches to design. Many of the deterioration mechanisms, which affect concrete, are the result of interaction with the non-living environment – chlorides in seawater, carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, cyclic freezing and thawing. However, living organisms can also cause damage – through both chemical and physical processes - which under the right conditions, can be severe. This book looks at all forms of concrete biodeterioration together for the first time. It examines, from a fundamental starting point, biodeterioration mechanisms, as well as the conditions which allow living organisms (bacteria, fungi, plants and a range of marine organisms) to colonise concrete. A detailed evaluation of chemical compounds produced by living organisms with respect to their interaction with the mineral constituents of concrete, and the implications it has for the integrity of structures, is also included. Approaches to avoiding biodeterioration of concrete are also covered, including selection of materials, mix proportioning, design, and use of protective systems.

Book Synopsis Fouling Organisms of the Indian Ocean by : Rachakonda Nagabhushanam
Download or read book Fouling Organisms of the Indian Ocean written by Rachakonda Nagabhushanam and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2020-08-14 with total page 564 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Marine fouling organisms attach permanently to ship hulls and underwater parts of offshore structures. All maritime nations spend millions, even billions of dollars to get rid of them. Believing that a pooling of knowledge of all aspects of the basic biology of fouling organisms and a re-examination of control technology methods are steps needed for the solution of this problem, the aim of the book is to highlight recent advances in fouling control technology and, at the same time, provide basic information on the biology of fouling organisms found in the Indian Ocean. The book begins by presenting an overview of research done in India on the marine fouling organisms and wood-borers of the Indian Ocean. It them moves through chapters dealing with the seccession of fouling communities, chemical cues in larval settlement, epibiosis, methods of fouling prevention, functional morphology, and distribution of foulers in Indian waters.
