Book excerpt: The book you are just going to read represents the greater part of the papers presented at the International Conference on Industrial and En vironmental Xenobiotics, held in Prague, 1980, and some contributions by those who could not come. The first aim of the meeting was to fol low the tradition set up by the first conference in 1977. Again, we in vited biochemists, pharmacologists, and toxicologists from both East and West, who were involved in the study of disposition, biotransforma tion, and toxicity of important kinds of industrial and environmental pollutants, to promote the exchange of ideas and opinions on priorities in this area of the study of human environment. The invited contributions offer an excellent survey of and pro found insight into specific areas of toxicology and disposition of metals and organic chemicals, and the series of papers on specific subjects bring fresh information on the biotransformation and mechanisms of toxic action of several industrially important solvents tmd monomers of plastics. Rather than from the Preface, the reader should seek guidance from the Index, which clearly shows the overlapping of this area of toxicology with the latest results in biochemistry. We gratefully acknowledge the understanding, care, and preciSion of the publisher that made this book possible. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Capturing the growth of the global medical device market in recent years, this practical new guide is essential for all who are responsible for ensuring safety in the use and manufacture of medical devices. It has been extensively updated to reflect significant advances, incorporating combination products and helpful case examples of current real-life problems in the field. The Third Edition explores these key current trends: global device markets continually advancing technology the increasing harmonization of device safety regulation worldwide Each aspect of safety evaluation is considered in terms of International Standards Organization (ISO), US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), European Union (EU), and Japanese Ministry of Health and Welfare (MHW) perspectives. In addition, the book reflects the role of the continuing growth of technology in the incorporation of science, particularly in the areas of immunotoxicology and toxicokinetics.

Book excerpt: Drug Safety Evaluation presents an all-inclusive, practical guide for those who are responsible for ensuring the safety of drugs and biologics for patients, for health care providers, for those involved in the manufacture of medicinal products, and for all those who need to understand how the safety of these products is evaluated. Individual chapters address specific approaches to evaluating hazards, including problems that are encountered and their solutions. Author Shayne Gad draws upon over twenty years of experience in toxicology, drug development, and risk assessment, explaining the scientific and philosophical bases for evaluating specific concerns (carcinogenicity, development toxicity, etc.) to provide both understanding and guidance for approaching new problems. Containing information specifically relevant to the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries, Drug Safety Evaluation covers a wide variety of topics, including: Acute toxicity testing in pharmaceutical safety evaluation Genotoxicity Safety assessment of inhalant drugs Immunotoxicology in pharmaceutical development Large animal studies Evaluation of human tolerance and safety in clinical trials Drug Safety Evaluation provides a road map for safety assessment as an integral part of the development of new drugs and therapeutics.

Book excerpt: While the safety assessment (“biocompatibility”) of medical devices has been focused on issues of local tissue tolerance (irritation, sensitization, cytotoxicity) and selected quantal effects (genotoxicity and acute lethality) since first being regulated in the late 1950s, this has changed as devices assumed a much more important role in healthcare and became more complex in both composition and in their design and operation. Add to this that devices now frequently serve as delivery systems for drugs, and that drugs may be combined with devices to improve device performance, and the problems of ensuring patient safety with devices has become significantly more complex. A part of this, requirements for ensuring safety (once based on use of previously acceptable materials – largely polymers and metals) have come to requiring determining which chemical entities are potentially released from a device into patients (and how much is released). Then an appropriate and relevant (yet also conservative) risk assessment must be performed for each identified chemical structure. The challenges inherent in meeting the current requirements are multifold, and this text seeks to identify, understand, and solve all of them. • Identify and verify the most appropriate available data. • As in most cases such data is for a different route of exposure, transform it for use in assessing exposure by the route of interest. • As the duration (and rate) of exposure to moieties released from a device are most frequently different (longer) than what available data speaks to, transformation across tissue is required. • As innate and adaptive immune responses are a central part of device/patient interaction, assessing potential risks on this basis are required. • Incorporating assessments for special populations such as neonates. • Use of (Q)SAR (Quantitative Structure Activity Relationships) modeling in assessments. • Performance and presentation of integrative assessments covering all potential biologic risks. Appendices will contain summarized available biocompatibility data for commonly used device materials (polymers and metals) and safety assessments on the frequently seen moieties in extractions from devices.

Book excerpt: On the occasion of the 450th anniversary of Philipp University, the porphyrin research group of. the Department of Clinical Biochemistry in the Faculty of Medicine organized an international symposium. This was held between June 28 and July 1, 1977, under the joint chairman ship of Professor Samuel Schwartz and the editor. The organizers and chairmen of the symposium wish to thank the Sozialminister of Hessen, Armin Clauss, the President of the German Society for Clinical Chemis try, Professor A. Delbrlick, and the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine of Philipp University, Professor F. Neurath, for their support and patronage. We are also grateful to Professor A. Treibs of the Institute of Organic Chemistry, Technical University of Munich. Professor Treibs, a former pupil, co-worker and now successor to the Nobel laureate Hans Fischer, kindly accepted the honorary presidency of this international symposium. The opening ceremony was inaugurated by the chairmen, with welcoming speeches by the President of Philipps University, Mr. Rudolf Zingel and patrons of the university. The editor outlined the 10 years of development of clinical biochemistry at Philipp University and traced in detail the continual development of its chief research effort in porphyria. It was pointed out that following the first international symposium on the regulation of porphyrin and heme biosynthesis in 1973 at Marburg (Doss, M.
