Book excerpt: Essay from the year 2017 in the subject Economics - Finance, grade: MA, Yale University, language: English, abstract: International Finance Center (IFC) are an integral part of the modern international financial economy. One of its basic components is the availability of developed national financial markets, actively interacting with similar markets in other countries. As an example, the United States can lead the UK, Japan, in economic development which play an important role the financial markets, and the major cities of these countries (New York, London, Tokyo), are the major international financial centers. Cities can be seen as the gateway to the global economy. They are important for the functioning of both national and global economy, since they are concentrated huge financial, informational and intellectual resources, based most of the major industrial, commercial, financial and service companies, specialized credit and financial institutions and banks. In addition to traditional MFC in the last decades of the 20th century a number of new financial centers competing for the role of international. The acceleration of globalization and especially its financial component, led to an increase in strength and influence regional financial centers, in particular, such as Hong Kong (Hong Kong). The financial market of China, which is traditionally considered to be emerging financial markets have long been a mature international financial centers that have an impact not only on the regional economy, but also in the distribution of global capital flows. The study of the functioning of the MFC, their development trends is the most important area for the understanding of the new global economy, its characteristics and movement mechanisms. At the same time identifying new trends in the development of Asian financial centers, particularly their inclusion in the competition for international corporations have mastered the financial market, is both scientific and practical interest. This makes it possible to identify local features of financial globalization as a result of the connection and the active development of the Asia-Pacific Economic Space with new financial centers, show their role, prospects and competitiveness in the global economy. Of particular importance is the study of the development of Chinese financial market, especially given the fact that the IMF has recognized the yuan a freely usable currency, reflecting the expanding role of China in world trade, a significant increase in the use of the yuan in the international scale and the growth of operations with it.

Book excerpt: Ever since the Great Recession, the global financial regulatory system has undergone significant changes. But have these changes been sufficient? Have they created a new problem of over-regulation? Is the system currently in a better position than in the pre-Recession years, or have we not adequately addressed the basic causes of the financial crisis and resulting Great Recession? These were the questions and issues addressed in the seventeenth annual international banking conference held at the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago in November 2014. In collaboration with the Bank of England, the theme of the conference was to examine the state of the new global financial system as it has evolved in response to significant market changes and regulatory reforms triggered by the global financial crisis. The papers from that conference are collected in this volume, with contributions from an international array of government officials, regulators, industry practitioners and academics.

Book excerpt: Essay from the year 2003 in the subject Business economics - Banking, Stock Exchanges, Insurance, Accounting, grade: 1,9 (B+), Oxford Brookes University (Business School), course: Practise of International Banking, language: English, abstract: Derivatives trading is now the world's biggest business, with an estimated daily turnover of over US$2.5 trillion and an annual growth rate of around 14 per cent (Swan, 1999). Derivatives markets have ancient origins, and a long and complex history of trading and regulation. This work examines the history of derivatives and their impacts on the structure of international banks in order to show the implications of modern international banking in comparison to domestic banking. Mishkin (2003) describes banks as financial institutions that accept deposits and grant loans. In this definition banks are the financial intermediaries that the average person contacts most frequently for its financial dispositions, savings, investments and payments. The structure of a bank therefore seems to be adjusted to the purpose of its business activity. Mishkins traditional definition of a bank includes to those financial institutions we refer to as mutual savings banks, savings and loan associations, commercial banks and credit unions. Their traditional core business is to provide the settlement of national payments and to transform funds from savers over time as well as to process market information (Canals, 1997). They focus on domestic or regional, eventually even local markets and realize their profits from interest margins and balance sheet activities. Therefore they employ an asset- and liability management in order to avoid liquidity and credit risks.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "'History has a way of repeating itself in financial matters because of a kind of sophisticated stupidity,' John Kenneth Galbraith once wrote. In a powerful demonstration of how we can learn from history, Professor Buckley analyses in depth the most devastating financial crises of the last quarter-century. He identifies the factors that can coalesce to trigger a financial crash. He then offers well-thought through legal measures to regulate these factors so as to prevent or minimise crises and to better protect those most vulnerable to international financial volatility: the poor in poor countries. In the course of the discussion he covers such topics as: the roles of the Bretton Woods institutions; global capital flows; debtor nation policies; the effects of the Brady restructurings of the 80s and 90s; the benefits of fixed versus floating exchange rates; the social costs of IMF policies; recent debt relief initiatives; a currency transactions tax; debt-for-development exchanges; the need for a global sovereign bankruptcy regime; and 'original sin', the national balance sheet problem. Professor Buckley's far-reaching recommendations include the details of much-needed tax, regulatory, banking, and bankruptcy regulation at a global level. As a general introduction to the international financial system and its regulation; as a powerful critique of the current system's imperfections; and most of all as an insightful work that identifies the principal lessons to be drawn from the past quarter century of international financial history, International Financial System: Policy and Regulation shows how to reconceive a system that has repeatedly sacrificed the lives of thousands and the futures of millions."--Cover.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This text provides a modern statement of the theory and practice of domestic and international banking and finance. Today, banks are no longer limited to retail deposit-taking and lending operations; they engage in wholesale banking activities, off-balance sheet business, and activities beyond domestic markets. The principles of all these types of bank services are lucidly discussed. Separate chapters provide general background on payments systems, Eurocurrency markets, bank safety and depositor protection. The authors' conception is unique in providing a comparative study in a geographical sense (they deal with banking in the U.S., Britain, and Australia) and in an institutional sense, tracing parallels between operations of banks and other financial institutions, particularly insurance companies. With the growing impact of financial innovations and the internationalization of financial markets, Domestic and International Banking is the innovative text needed for courses on monetary and banking policy and on capital markets and financial institutions. Mervyn K. Lewis is Midland Bank Professor of Money and Banking at the University of Nottingham, and Kevin T. Davis is Professor of Finance at the University of Melbourne.

Book excerpt: A Brookings Institution Press, the World Bank, and the International Monetary Fund publication The extensive reforms and liberalization of financial services in emerging markets worldwide call for cutting-edge strategies to capture the benefits of new investment opportunities. In Open Doors, a volume of papers from the third annual Financial Markets and Development conference, multidisciplinary financial sector experts analyze current economic and political trends and prescribe practical advice to the financial development community. The book addresses the key issues of concern regarding the emerging markets, including the trends, motivations, and scope of FDI in finance; policy options that will best capture the opportunities of foreign entry; and the role of foreign institutions in e-finance innovation. The authors focus on specific topics such as foreign participation in emerging market banking systems and securities industries, WTO policies and enforcement, the role of foreign banks, liberalization of insurance markets, the need for capital markets, and the policy, regulatory, and legal issues associated with e-finance. For policymakers and financial practitioners affected by the WTO's Financial Services Agreement, this timely book should be of particular interest. Contributors include Donald Mathieson (International Money Fund), Pierre Sauvé (Trade Directorate, OECD), George J. Vojta (formerly with Bankers Trust and Citibank), Harold D. Skipper (J. Mack Robinson College of Business, Georgia State University), Benn Steil (Council on Foreign Relations), Morris Goldstein and Edward M. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ongoing globalization of financial markets has increased the import ance to users of financial services, policy-makers and financial analysts of understanding the structure and operation of banking systems in other countries as well as that in their own country. This volume contributes to such an understanding. The structure and operation of the banking system are described for 10 important countries, plus the European Economic Community, under one cover. The contributing authors are knowledgable and widely respected experts. The author, or at least one of the coauthors, of each chapter is a resident of the country described. Each chapter follows a broadly similar outline, although the attention devoted to any particular area varies substantially according to authors' perceptions of its relative importance in the particular country. The chapters spotlight the similarities and differences among the structures. The volume should serve as both a handy and authoritative reference guide for practitioners, regulators and students of international banking. An early benefit of the book was an international conference held in Chicago in the fall of 1989 on the world integration of financial markets. A number of the authors of the chapters presented brief versions of their papers. The conference was sponsored jointly by the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago and the MidAmerica Institute. The audience was primarily senior officers and regulators of financial institutions in the midwest. The conference generated considerable interest in both the subject matter and the contents of this book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'The Handbook is especially recommended to MBA students and faculty and belongs in the reference collections of academic and research libraries. Although each chapter may serve as a self-contained unit, readers will want to look at the larger picture by comparing and contrasting articles found in each part of the work. It should prove to be a helpful source for those studying international banking, economics and finance, and international business.' – Lucy Heckman, American Reference Books Annual 2004 The Handbook of International Banking provides a clearly accessible source of reference material, covering the main developments that reveal how the internationalization and globalization of banking have developed over recent decades to the present, and analyses the creation of a new global financial architecture. The Handbook is the first of its kind in the area of international banking with contributions from leading specialists in their respective fields, often with remarkable experience in academia or professional practice. The material is provided mainly in the form of self-contained surveys, which trace the main developments in a well-defined topic, together with specific references to journal articles and working papers. Some contributions, however, disseminate new empirical findings especially where competing paradigms are evaluated. The Handbook is divided into four areas of interest. The first deals with the globalization of banking and continues on to banking structures and functions. The authors then focus on banking risks, crises and regulation and finally the evolving international financial architecture. Designed to serve as a source of supplementary reading and inspiration, the Handbook is suited to a range of courses in banking and finance including post-experience and in-house programmes for bankers and other financial services practitioners. This outstanding volume will become essential reference for policymakers, financial practitioners as well as academics and researchers in the field.
