Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past 20 years the global political economy has experienced its most profound shifts since the onset of the industrial revolution. In South Africa and the World, Mills Soko reflects on some of the salient issues that have pervaded public discourse during this time, analysing them within the context of the contemporary South African political economy and of the country's position in the world. Arranged thematically, the essays were all written during a defining period in recent history, a period that has witnessed, among others, the accession of China to the WTO, the 9/11 terrorist attacks on the US, the invention of the iPad, the birth of Facebook, the 2008/9 global financial crisis, Brexit and the global coronavirus pandemic which began at the end of 2019. The turbulent multipolar world demands visionary political and economic leadership, supported by institutions well attuned to contemporary conditions. Such leadership is in short supply. Nor is the existing institutional architecture sufficiently equipped to deal with a complex array of economic, social, environmental, technological and demographic challenges. Mills Soko highlights what has not worked in terms of politics, leadership, foreign policy, the economy, the African development trajectory, corporate ethics, international trade, global governance, and the thread which underlies all these issues – the importance of strong, decisive and accountable leadership. He counters his criticism with what has worked and offers views on how some of the problems that have constrained progress in South Africa and the world can be solved. A central message emerges from his writings: leadership and governance matter, whether in the national or international context. It is a message that permeates all the chapters in the book. And it goes to the heart of what South Africa has gone through over the past two decades and where it is today.

His emphasis is on the debates between liberals, Marxists, and to a lesser extent "post-structuralists" about the origins and the course of South Africa′s racial order′ - Tom Lodge, University of Witwatersrand `A well-researched, well-argued, readable, interesting, informative and competent study′ - Capital and Class Providing a wide-ranging and critical introduction to contemporary South Africa, this book uses an interdisciplinary lens to introduce the student to the main debates, historical context, and issues that have characterized the study of South Africa over the last three decades. Key topics include: the role of colonialism, capitalism and modernity in the formation of the racial order; changes in the South African state; questions of class, race and ehtnicity; black resistance; and the transition to democracy. A number of underlying debates are critically evaluated. For exmple, the contribution of materialist and class-analytic approaches, the application of post-structuralism and theories of modernity, and the prospects for democratic liberalism and socialism in post-apartheid South Africa.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An examination of post-apartheid politics This volume explores some of the key features of popular politics and resistance before and after 1994. It looks at continuities and changes in the forms of struggle and ideologies involved, as well as the significance of post-apartheid grassroots politics. Is this a new form of politics or does it stand as a direct descendent of the insurrectionary impulses of the late apartheid era? Posing questions about continuity and change before and after 1994 raises key issues concerning the nature of power and poverty in the country. Contributors suggest that expressions of popular politics are deeply set within South African political culture and still have the capacity to influence political outcomes. The introduction by William Beinart links the papers together, places them in context of recent literature on popular politics and 'history from below' and summarises their main findings, supporting the argument that popular politics outside of the party system remain significant in South Africa and help influence national politics. The roots of this collection lie in post-graduate student research conducted at the University of Oxford in the early twenty-first century.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Political parties and the party system that underpins South Africa’s democracy have the potential to build a cohesive and prosperous nation. But in the past few years the ANC’s dominance has strained the system and tested it and its institutions’ fortitude. There are deeper issues of accountability that often spurn the Constitution and there is also a clear need to foster meaningful public participation and transparency. This volume offers a different and detailed assessment of the health of South Africa’s political system. This study intends to unravel the condition of the party system in South Africa and culminates in the question: Do South African parties promote or hinder democracy in the country? The areas of the party system that are known to require continued work are the weakness of democratic structures within parties, the perceived lack of responsibility of elected parliamentarians towards voters, non-transparent private partner financing structures and a lack of attractiveness of party-political commitment, especially for women. Experts in the respective fields address all of these areas in this book.

Book excerpt: Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2018 im Fachbereich Sozialwissenschaften allgemein, Note: 1,0, Pädagogische Hochschule Karlsruhe (Mehrsprachigkeit), Veranstaltung: South Africa: Culture, Literature, Language, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: South Africa is a developing country with a history characterized by constitutional racial segregation and prejudice in the form of Apartheid through white supremacy that gave way to a non-racial democracy only in 1994. South Africa does not just reflect the nature and diversity of challenges globally, but also the strategies pursued by countries to address these issues. Government institutions, campaigns and local communities have been looking for innovative ways to improve problems of all South Africans they are dealing with. Social and economic determinants of violence and a legacy of apartheid policies such as racism, segregation, injustice and inequality must be addressed to reduce inequalities in society and build community cohesion. In the following section, I would like to give a short insight into my research. The central question of the paper is to expose, how South Africa has changed after Apartheid and what the New South Africa looks like? In order to evaluate the way in which post-Apartheid South Africa deals with the issues, challenges and problems and accommodated its population diversity, this paper is organized in four parts. The first chapter of this paper will give a rough outline of the most important historic events in South Africa during Apartheid. The second chapter deals with internal political transformations after the end of apartheid. This part provides a context on the land issue and to the challenges post-apartheid has to address with unemployment, poverty and inequality. The third part focuses on political processes and debates about the spread of HIV/AIDS in South Africa. The last chapter is about the culture of violence against African migrants, called "Xenophobia". At the very end, there will be a final conclusion which illustrates the question and the aspects which emphasize the results regarding to the hypothesis that are made.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents applications of the Analytic Hierarchy Process developed by Thomas L. Saaty to deal with unstructured decision problems, together with case histories developed by him and in collaboration with others in areas of current societal concern. Its purpose is to provide the reader with examples of how to deal with unstructured problems, particularly ones involving socio economic and political issues with qualitative and intangible factors. These examples show how to use judgment and experience to analyze a com plex decision problem by combining its qualitative and quantitative aspects in a single framework and generating a set of priorities for alternative courses of action. The process has inherent flexibilities in structuring a problem and in taking diverse judgments from people, whether singly, in a group working together, or by questionnaire. Decisionmakers will profit from this approach. It makes accessible to them a framework for understanding the complexity of the system they are in as it impinges on the surrounding environment. To deal with complexity, we must first understand it. Systems thinking is necessary if all the important factors are to be considered. Complex systems problems can challenge and tax our logical capability to fully understand their causes and the consequences of any action we may take to solve them. Neverthe less, in time their effects on us tend to become better known than their causes.

Book excerpt: What is South Africa's foreign policy, who makes it and why does it matter? These are the varied questions that scholarship has grappled with following South Africa's triumphant return to the global stage in 1994. In this edited volume, the authors assess the position and input of actors beyond the traditional structures of the Presidency and the department of international relations and cooperation, most notably civil society actors in foreign policy decision-making. In an environment where domestic actors are argued to be found increasingly on the outside of policy decision-making circles, this book brings back into the fold the discussion of the value of participation. In looking at foreign policy through the different standpoints of other government departments, parliament, labour, business, the African National Congress (ANC), civil society and the role of gender, the chapters offer insights into how South Africa's foreign policy is understood and how these actors seek an input in its direction. It is this engagement that ultimately makes foreign policy matter to all South Africans as the country moves forward in a turbid international environment.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These days, politics often seem to be local and global simultaneously, challenging people, politicians, and scholars to sort out what is domestic from what is international and how the two are related. Janice Love demonstrates the complex realities of how local and global politics are intimately interwoven, sometimes inextricably so, specifically in southern Africa. In southern Africa, like many other regions, such linkages have existed for decades, if not centuries. Yet the current era is different from previous times when human communities found themselves closely intertwined. Love examines military, political, and economic changes in recent decades. Students of international relations, comparative politics, and African studies will find the region's experience instructive in understanding larger trends in the world. Students particularly interested in Africa will gain insight not only about this region, but also its significance for the whole continent. Deliberately crosses the boundaries of domestic politics and foreign policy as well as comparative politics and international relations. By taking a globalization approach, connecting the local, regional and global, the book offers fresh insights into the dynamics of war and peace, wealth and poverty as well as local to global governance in southern Africa. Examines globalization in three arenas or domains (military, political, and economic), not only distinguishing them from each other, but also probing what has changed and what has remained the same across time.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The paper was originally intended to contain a general survey of the economic development of the Republic of South Africa, with emphasis on its industrialization, for use in a graduate seminar discussion. However, in the course of assembling data, much of which was generously provided by the South African government's informational services in the United States, it became apparent that it is virtually impossible to consider any human enterprise in South Africa without some reference to the racial issues that are inevitably involved. There is, in addition, the fact that South Africa's racial policies have been the subject of international censure for a number of years. However, while South Africa has been able to largely ignore these pronouncements because of its advanced economy, it appears now that this situation will not be able to continue much longer. In view of the foregoing, an effort has been made to expand upon this summary of South Africa's economy and place it within the context of the internal and external political factors that have influenced its development and will determine its future.
