Book excerpt: Symposium N, "Intermetallic-Based Alloys for Structural and Functional Applications," was held Nov. 29-Dec. 3 at the 2010 MRS Fall Meeting in Boston, Massachusetts. Intermetallics for functional and structural applications were covered, and topics ranged from first-principles calculations and the investigation of thermodynamics of intermetallic alloy systems, through characterizing defect structures to the evaluation of mechanical properties, corrosion behaviour, and processing of intermetallic alloys. Within the realm of functional applications, investigations on NiTi-based shape memory alloys, intermetallic-related alloys for hydrogen storage, and intermetallic phases with thermoelectric or catalytic properties, were of major interest. For structural applications, aluminides of titanium, iron, nickel, and a variety of silicides were covered. Besides research on these more established intermetallic phases, recent advances in novel Co-based superalloys and basic research on Laves phases were presented. This volume presents a representative overview of the current state of research on intermetallic phases, providing an insight into the current state of development of individual intermetallic alloy systems and identifying areas for future research.

This book was released on 2014-06-05 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The increasing demand for materials which enable a more efficient energy conversion - materials allowing higher operating temperatures and a lower weight of the components with preferably better corrosion resistance- has put intermetallic-based alloys back into focus. For example, the recent use of light weight, TiAl-based alloys for automotive and aerospace applications has spurred research on other intermetallic-based alloys. In addition to structural intermetallics for extreme environments encountered in advanced energy systems, this book also focuses on fundamental and interdisciplinary aspects of novel intermetallic-metal systems (e.g., Co-based superalloys) and functional intermetallics that can store energy, generate power and enhance reliability. Topics include: intermetallics for hydrogen storage and thermoelectric applications; iron aluminides - physical metallurgy; titanium aluminides - physical metallurgy; titanium aluminides - structure, properties and coatings; iron aluminides, titanium aluminides, nickel aluminides and silicides; nickel/cobalt superalloys and nickel aluminides; niobium and molybdenum silicide-based alloys; laves phases and fundamental aspects of intermetallics - phase stability, defects and theory.

Book excerpt: Defects such as dislocations, antiphase domains and grain boundaries, interstitials/substitutionals, and vacancies affect many physical and mechanical properties of ordered intermetallics. As a result, they often play a decisive role in determining the macroscopic behavior of not just structural intermetallics but also 'functional' intermetallics such as shape memory alloys and hydrogen storage materials. This book follows in the general tradition of the highly successful series of MRS symposia titled High-Temperature Ordered Intermetallic Alloys. However, it also represents a significant departure from its predecessors: it includes papers on functional intermetallics in addition to papers on structural intermetallics; and focuses on defects and how they affect various properties of interest in structural and functional intermetallics. Roughly 30 percent of the papers in the book are on functional intermetallics, including materials for hydrogen storage, magnetic, and shape memory applications. The remaining papers deal with structural intermetallics, including the still active areas of nickel-, iron-, and titanium-aluminides, as well as the newer materials for ultrahigh-temperature applications.

Book excerpt: The overarching theme of this book is the critical importance of microstructure and defects on the physical and mechanical properties of ordered intermetallics. These compounds have great promise for a variety of diverse and important applications such as high-temperature structural materials, 'smart' shape memory alloys, hydrogen storage media, thermoelectric power sources, and magnetic applications. The integrative aspects of this topic are highlighted to encourage a common platform for the presentation of intermetallics research that may have very different technological backgrounds and objectives, yet in all cases require a sound understanding of the elementary processes that govern structural and functional properties - from the atomistic through microstructural scales. The book brings together researchers from around the world and underscores the tremendous progress in the field. Topics include iron aluminides, nickel aluminides, titanium aluminides, silicides, functional intermetallics (for shape memory, thermoelectric, magnetic and hydrogen storage applications) and more generic modeling of intermetallic compounds.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anelastic Relaxation in Crystalline Solids provides an overview of anelasticity in crystals. This book discusses the various physical and chemical phenomena in crystalline solids. Comprised of 20 chapters, this volume begins with a discussion on the formal theory of anelasticity, and then explores the anelastic behavior, which is a manifestation of internal relaxation process. This text lays the groundwork for the formal theory by introducing the postulates. Other chapters explore the different dynamical methods that are frequently used in studying anelasticity. The reader is then introduced to the physical origin of anelastic relaxation process in terms of atomic model. This text also discusses the various types of point defects in crystals, including elementary point defects, composite defects, and self-interstitial defects. The final chapter provides relevant information on the various frequency ranges used in the study. This book is intended for crystallographers, mechanical engineers, metallurgical engineers, solid-state physicists, materials scientists, and researchers.
