Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

This book was released on 2002 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Synopsis English as a Lingua Franca among Adolescents by : Katharina Beuter
Download or read book English as a Lingua Franca among Adolescents written by Katharina Beuter and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2023-07-03 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is not only the first book-length investigation into adolescents’ use of English as a Lingua Franca (ELF), it also explores ELF in an African-European context, which has received little attention in ELF research so far. The book examines the interplay between language, culture and identity in adolescents’ ELF interactions. It combines quantitative and qualitative approaches to explore strategies secondary school students employ in a German-Tanzanian student exchange in order to reach their communicative goals. Introducing and drawing on the TeenELF corpus, the book investigates the speaker- and situation-specific potential of repetition and repair, complimenting, laughter and humour as well as various practices of translanguaging. The study reveals ELF as a transcultural space, in which different linguacultural influences meet and merge, while meaning, rapport and identity are interactionally negotiated. In the face of an increasing interest in ELF-informed pedagogy, the present approach investigates the communicative needs and competences of school students and derives both theoretical as well as classroom implications from its linguistic findings.

Book Synopsis Adverbial Relations in Turkish-German Bilingualism by : Seda Yilmaz Wörfel
Download or read book Adverbial Relations in Turkish-German Bilingualism written by Seda Yilmaz Wörfel and published by Waxmann Verlag. This book was released on 2022 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Turkish language in diaspora is in process of change due to different language constellations of immigrants and the dominance of majority languages. This led to a great interest in various research areas, particularly in linguistics. Against this background, this study focuses on developmental change in the use of adverbial clause-combining constructions in Turkish-German bilingual students' oral and written text production. It illustrates the use of non-finite constructions and some unique alternative strategies to express adverbial relations with authentic examples in Turkish and German. The findings contribute to a better understanding of how bilingual competencies vary in expressing adverbial relations depending on language contact and extra-linguistic factors. Dr. Seda Yilmaz Wörfel completed a Ph.D. in German linguistics at the University of Potsdam, Germany. She works as a research associate at the Mercator-Institute for Literacy and Language Education at the University of Cologne. Her research interests are Turkish-German Bilingualism, Second Language Acquisition, Multiliteracy and Language Contact.

Download or read book Language written by Annikki Koskensalo and published by LIT Verlag Münster. This book was released on 2012 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As speakers of different languages interact, language contact will occur. Language contact will necessarily lead to language change for both parties involved in such contact. As languages change, the issue of competence becomes problematic. Who has the right to say what language will be taught in schools, or what kind of language will be published in the press and spoken in the media in a world where languages constantly change? The articles in this collection refer to several language areas in Europe, from the North (Scandinavia), the South (Spain / Balkan), the East (Ukraine / Russia), as well as the Center (Austria / Germany) and includes one contribution on Canada. They present different cases of language competence and assessment, languages in contact in different settings, and language changes which are related to applied linguistics, both from a sociolinguistic and an educational linguistic point of view. Book Synopsis The Habsburg Monarchy's Many-Languaged Soul by : Michaela Wolf
Download or read book The Habsburg Monarchy's Many-Languaged Soul written by Michaela Wolf and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2015-05-28 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the years between 1848 and 1918, the Habsburg Empire was an intensely pluricultural space that brought together numerous “nationalities” under constantly changing – and contested – linguistic regimes. The multifaceted forms of translation and interpreting, marked by national struggles and extensive multilingualism, played a crucial role in constructing cultures within the Habsburg space. This book traces translation and interpreting practices in the Empire’s administration, courts and diplomatic service, and takes account of the “habitualized” translation carried out in everyday life. It then details the flows of translation among the Habsburg crownlands and between these and other European languages, with a special focus on Italian–German exchange. Applying a broad concept of “cultural translation” and working with sociological tools, the book addresses the mechanisms by which translation and interpreting constructs cultures, and delineates a model of the Habsburg Monarchy’s “pluricultural space of communication” that is also applicable to other multilingual settings. Book Synopsis Literacy Development in A Multilingual Context by : Aydin Y. Durgunoglu
Download or read book Literacy Development in A Multilingual Context written by Aydin Y. Durgunoglu and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-12-16 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the past decades, literacy has gradually become a major concern all over the world. Though there is a great diversity in both the distribution and degree of literacy in different countries, there has been an increasing awareness of the number of illiterates and the consequences of being illiterate. However, literacy is no longer seen as a universal trait. When one focuses on culturally-sensitive accounts of reading and writing practices, the concept of literacy as a single trait does not seem very feasible. A multiplicity of literacy practices can be distinguished which are related to specific cultural contexts and associated with relations of power and ideology. As such, literacy can be seen as a lifelong context-bound set of practices in which an individual's needs vary with time and place. This volume explores the use of literacy outside the mainstream in different contexts throughout the world. It is divided into four sections. Section 1 presents an anthropological perspective--analyzing the society and the individual in a society. Section 2 presents a psychological perspective--focusing on the individuals themselves and analyzing the cognitive and affective development of young children as they acquire literacy in their first and second languages. Section 3 presents an educational perspective--highlighting the variations in educational approaches in different societies as well as the outcomes of these approaches. Section 4 summarizes the studies presented in this volume. Both theoretical issues and educational implications related to the development of literacy in two languages are discussed. An attempt is also made to open up new directions in the study of literacy development in multilingual contexts by bringing these various disciplinary perspectives together.
