Die Arbeit beschäftigt sich mit dem Vergleich der deutschen und chinesischen Kultur, erklärt den Kulturbegriff und verschiedene Kulturmodelle. Außerdem wird ein Kulturvergleich anhand von Hofstedes Kulturdimensionen durchgeführt. Im letzten Abschnitt der Arbeit werden Herausforderungen bei der Hofstede Kulturdimension Machtdistanz, sowie Kontextuierung nach Hall und der Kontrollüberzeugung von Rotter, zwischen China und Deutschland beschrieben. Im Rahmen der ethnozentrischen Personalstrategie des Unternehmens, gehen Führungskräfte aus Deutschland nach China, um dort die Expansion zu begleiten. Eine sogenannte Entsendung ist in persönlicher und beruflicher Hinsicht eine sehr bereichernde Erfahrung. Entsendete Personen aus der Muttergesellschaft sind der verlängerte Arm des Stammhauses und mitverantwortlich für die Durchsetzung der Unternehmenspolitik im Ausland. Zu erwähnen ist auch die persönliche und familiäre Situation, die durch vielerlei Möglichkeiten wie eine internationale Schulbildung für Kinder gekennzeichnet ist und eine einzigartige Erfahrung einer neuen Kultur ermöglicht. Es handelt sich bei aller Abenteuerlust aber auch um eine nicht zu unterschätzende Umstellung der persönlichen Situation und markiert nicht selten einen neuen Lebensabschnitt, den es zu gestalten gilt. Vor diesem Hintergrund ist es von größter Bedeutung, sich intensiv auf die Aufgaben im Ausland vorzubereiten. Die Personalabteilung stellt dafür diesen Leitfaden zur Verfügung, der das Basisfundament für kulturelles Verständnis sein soll. In dieser Arbeit wird beschrieben, was Kultur ist, wo es Unterschiede und Gemeinsamkeiten gibt und wie man sich den Eigenschaften anderer Kulturen anhand von kulturvergleichenden Modellen nähert. Der Leitfaden wird außerdem auf die großen Unterschiede zwischen der chinesischen und deutschen Kultur eingehen und die damit verbundenen Herausforderungen erklären, um vermeidbare Missverständnisse und Fehler zu umgehen.

Zur Beantwortung dieser Frage ist es wichtig, im Laufe der Arbeit die folgenden Aspekte zu behandeln und abzuklären: Welche Faktoren beeinflussen die Anpassung an eine fremde Kultur? Was sind die Merkmale und Eigenheiten von Expatriates im Allgemeinen und von deutschen Expatriates in China im Speziellen? Welche inneren und äußeren Bedingungen führen zu einer besseren Integration von Expatriates? Abschließend stellt sich die Frage: Wie kann man mithilfe dieser Erkenntnisse die Anpassung der übrigen Expatriates vorantreiben oder erleichtern? Mit fortschreitender Globalisierung müssen Mitarbeiter in Unternehmen immer flexibler werden. Manche Arbeitgeber entsenden ihre Mitarbeiter ins Reich der Mitte, um eine gute Marktstellung zu erreichen. Expatriates können jedoch nur gute Arbeitsergebnisse liefern, wenn sie sich im fremden Land wohlfühlen und gut in ihr Umfeld integriert sind. Auf diesem Gebiet ist mittlerweile ein breites Spektrum an Fachliteratur verfügbar. Häufig werden die Entsendungsziele der Mitarbeiter und Unternehmen, die Vorbereitung der Mitarbeiter auf den Auslandseinsatz, die Betreuung vor Ort und die Probleme bei der Rückkehr des Mitarbeiters in die Heimat thematisiert. Das Themengebiet wird oft unter betriebswirtschaftlichen Aspekten betrachtet. Ein anderer großer Bereich der Forschung befasst sich allgemein mit Kulturunterschieden und Anpassungsprozessen. In dieser Arbeit steht jedoch der Expatriate als Individuum während seines Auslandsaufenthaltes im Mittelpunkt der Untersuchung. Somit dient diese als Schnittstelle folgender Themenbereiche: Mitarbeiterentsendung ins Ausland, Anpassung des Einzelnen sowie Leben in einer fremden Kultur. Eine Besonderheit dieser Ausführung ist ferner, dass durch den Länderfokus auf Deutschland und China sowie die spezielle Zielgruppe der Expatriates die Resultate greifbar gemacht werden. Vor allem frühere Studien konzentrieren sich beispielsweise auf Studenten im Ausland.
