Book Synopsis Interkulturelle Kommunikation im globalen Bildungsraum by : Vasiliy Kovalev
Download or read book Interkulturelle Kommunikation im globalen Bildungsraum written by Vasiliy Kovalev and published by Anchor Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2017-03-16 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. This anthology adresses the topic of interculturality and, therefore, includes articles in English, German and Russian. In the context of the ongoing globalization, intercultural communication becomes increasingly important: global mobility and division of labour, free travelling combined with new communication technologies encourages exchange between people from different cultures. This requires intercultural competence and communication skills not only in private contexts but on the labour market as well. From different points of view the authors of this book discuss the relevance of intercultural communication. By showing how different disciplines deal with this topic the book gives the reader a multiperspective insight on the discourse of interculturality.
Book Synopsis The Discourse of Ethics and Equity in Intercultural Communication by : Shanta Nair-Venugopal
Download or read book The Discourse of Ethics and Equity in Intercultural Communication written by Shanta Nair-Venugopal and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-10-02 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the notions of ethics and equity in relation to language and communication in intercultural relations. Although these notions are often discussed, they are not always addressed with regard to specifi c subjects. Much intercultural discourse and dialogue in recent times has been coloured by the clash of civilizations (as described by Samuel Huntington), terrorist attacks such as 9/11, and the indelible effects which these events have had on dealings between different peoples, cultures and religions. This book discusses ethics and equity with regard to marginalized and privileged minorities, victims of abuse and of confl ict, researchers and practitioners, and language learners and speaker/users. It opens up spaces for a critical discourse of ethics and equity in language and intercultural communication as ‘new’ knowledge. This book was originally published as a special issue of Language and Intercultural Communication.

Book excerpt: With the rapidly developing globalization of various sectors of modern life, individuals, organizations, and nations are becoming increasingly aware of the ways in which cultural diversity may not only be a potential cause of conflict but also a source of growth, creativity, and inspiration. If, traditionally, intercultural mediation has been understood as a conflict-solving strategy or as a means to facilitate communication between individuals from different cultural backgrounds, Bridging Culture aims at providing a framework and a set of theoretical reflections towards a larger vision of the field, presenting mediation as a particular form of critical intervention within the different domains of the humanities. The contributions in the present volume take intercultural mediation to be a multifaceted, interdisciplinary phenomenon, impacting upon the fields of linguistics and literature as well as translation and cultural studies, where themes such as interculturality, multilingualism, and cultural transfer are continual and urgent features of contemporary discourse and debate.
Book Synopsis The Role of Religion in Shaping Politeness During Greeting Encounters in Arabic. A Matter of Conflict Or Understanding by : Abdelaziz Bouchara
Download or read book The Role of Religion in Shaping Politeness During Greeting Encounters in Arabic. A Matter of Conflict Or Understanding written by Abdelaziz Bouchara and published by Anchor Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2016-07 with total page 89 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Politeness is one of the very important issues in the field of sociolinguistics and pragmatics, as it can be seen in almost every type of our interactions. Since the evolving of the politeness theory (Brown and Levinson 1978), cross-cultural pragmatics has gained the attention of many researchers in this field. However, the Arab society has been far less investigated. Therefore, this book widens the scope of cross-cultural pragmatics by investigating politeness in (Moroccan) Arabic and contrasting the behavior of Arab and German speakers with regard to one type of politeness, namely the speech act of greeting. Furthermore, the implications of this study for foreign language teaching and cross-cultural training indicate that politeness and face concerns in different cultures should be part of any learning process. Hopefully, besides being informative, especially to scholars from other fields of intercultural communication research, this study should contribute to raise the awareness of sociolinguists in particular with respect to the role of religion in shaping politeness in Arabic and to serious confusion and misunderstandings that may come into being, when communicators from different cultural backgrounds cannot identify the pragmatic (implicit or indirect) meaning of their interlocutor’s utterance.

This new and huge market is drawing increasing attention from the event industry worldwide. The aim of this handbook is to analyse the Chinese event market, reflect on emerging trends, scrutinise the key players and identify the implica-tions for the education of future professionals in this industry. This handbook is the first of its kind on the Chinese event market written in English. It is a collection of 27articles written by 39 authors from China, Germany, Malaysia, South Africa, the United Kingdom and the United States. The contributions embrace a mix of theoretical and practical reflections, written by academics/lecturers and practitioners alike. The focus lies on business events, such as trade fairs, conventions and corporate events. Some very specifically describe a certain trend or development; others focus on overall trends. The handbook is divided into four chapters. Following an introductory chapter on the event market, the second chapter focuses on the event market in China from a global perspective. The third chapter reflects on management aspects in China’s event industry. The fourth and final chapter addresses the issue of educating professionals for the event industry.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Synopsis The German Language in British Higher Education by : Sylvia Jaworska
Download or read book The German Language in British Higher Education written by Sylvia Jaworska and published by Otto Harrassowitz Verlag. This book was released on 2009 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The discipline of German Studies in English-speaking countries is in crisis and the situation in British Higher Education can be seen as a paradigmatic example. Symptoms of the crisis are a dramatic decrease in the number of students, financial difficulties and the resulting closures of German Departments. Furthermore, the language skills which finally emerge from universities are not always satisfactory. The present book sheds light on key aspects of the institutionalised teaching and learning of German language in the UK. The first part - the macro-context - surveys the socio-political developments that have recently affected the sector of modern languages and specifically the discipline of German Studies. The second part - the micro-context -, zooms in to the teaching and learning as experienced from both students' and teachers' perspective. Ultimately, by linking the macro-analysis with the micro findings, the present book proposes a number of strategies which could contribute to the optimisation and enhancement of teaching and learning German in British Higher Education.

Book Synopsis Elemente Einer Kulturkontrastive Linguistik by : Hannes Kniffka
Download or read book Elemente Einer Kulturkontrastive Linguistik written by Hannes Kniffka and published by Peter Lang Gmbh, Internationaler Verlag Der Wissenschaften. This book was released on 1995 with total page 476 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The papers in this volume document about a decade of teaching experience in the fields of linguistics and foreign languages (German, English as a foreign language) in different cultures (Saudi Arabia, PR China, Morocco). There is no attempt to introduce yet another branch of modern linguistics. Rather, the old theme of the cultural embeddedness of verbal (and non-verbal) behavior is discussed from various perspectives. All papers are based on a large amount of authentic data of culture-specific and intercultural behavior, gathered by participant observation, interviews, tests etc. in the different settings over a long period of time. The main objective is to contribute to an extensional definition of «culture-contrastive linguistics» by a discussion of descriptive and didactic issues in an empirical fashion.
Book Synopsis Kommunikation über Grenzen by : Gerhard Stilz
Download or read book Kommunikation über Grenzen written by Gerhard Stilz and published by Universitätsverlag Göttingen. This book was released on 2010 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Vor diesem Hintergrund organisierte die German Section of the Department of Foreign Languages, University of Pune, eine internationale interdisziplinäre Konferenz in Pune (7.-9.

Download or read book Pursuit of Meaning written by Jürgen Straub and published by transcript Verlag. This book was released on 2015-07-31 with total page 519 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fields of cross-cultural and cultural psychology both acknowledge the role of `culture' for the constitution of a meaningful practice. There are notable differences as well as remarkable commonalities between nomologically oriented cross-cultural psychology on the one hand and interpretive cultural psychology on the other. Contributions to this book discuss recent theoretical and methodological approaches from both fields in order to explore their joint potential for an advancement of the concept of culture, for the theoretical conceptualization and methodical completion of comparative cultural studies and the scientific understanding of cultural difference. This volume includes contributions by Ernest E. Boesch, Kenneth J. Gergen, Rom Harré, Gustav Jahoda and Jaan Valsiner.
