Book Synopsis Elliptic Equations: An Introductory Course by : Michel Chipot
Download or read book Elliptic Equations: An Introductory Course written by Michel Chipot and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-03-29 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this book is to introduce the reader to different topics of the theory of elliptic partial differential equations by avoiding technicalities and refinements. Apart from the basic theory of equations in divergence form it includes subjects such as singular perturbation problems, homogenization, computations, asymptotic behaviour of problems in cylinders, elliptic systems, nonlinear problems, regularity theory, Navier-Stokes system, p-Laplace equation. Just a minimum on Sobolev spaces has been introduced, and work or integration on the boundary has been carefully avoided to keep the reader's attention on the beauty and variety of these issues. The chapters are relatively independent of each other and can be read or taught separately. Numerous results presented here are original and have not been published elsewhere. The book will be of interest to graduate students and faculty members specializing in partial differential equations.
Book Synopsis Periodic Homogenization of Elliptic Systems by : Zhongwei Shen
Download or read book Periodic Homogenization of Elliptic Systems written by Zhongwei Shen and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-09-04 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph surveys the theory of quantitative homogenization for second-order linear elliptic systems in divergence form with rapidly oscillating periodic coefficients in a bounded domain. It begins with a review of the classical qualitative homogenization theory, and addresses the problem of convergence rates of solutions. The main body of the monograph investigates various interior and boundary regularity estimates that are uniform in the small parameter e>0. Additional topics include convergence rates for Dirichlet eigenvalues and asymptotic expansions of fundamental solutions, Green functions, and Neumann functions. The monograph is intended for advanced graduate students and researchers in the general areas of analysis and partial differential equations. It provides the reader with a clear and concise exposition of an important and currently active area of quantitative homogenization.
Book Synopsis Elliptic Partial Differential Equations of Second Order by : D. Gilbarg

This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is intended as an essentially self contained exposition of portions of the theory of second order quasilinear elliptic partial differential equations, with emphasis on the Dirichlet problem in bounded domains. It grew out of lecture notes for graduate courses by the authors at Stanford University, the final material extending well beyond the scope of these courses. By including preparatory chapters on topics such as potential theory and functional analysis, we have attempted to make the work accessible to a broad spectrum of readers. Above all, we hope the readers of this book will gain an appreciation of the multitude of ingenious barehanded techniques that have been developed in the study of elliptic equations and have become part of the repertoire of analysis. Many individuals have assisted us during the evolution of this work over the past several years. In particular, we are grateful for the valuable discussions with L. M. Simon and his contributions in Sections 15.4 to 15.8; for the helpful comments and corrections of J. M. Cross, A. S. Geue, J. Nash, P. Trudinger and B. Turkington; for the contributions of G. Williams in Section 10.5 and of A. S. Geue in Section 10.6; and for the impeccably typed manuscript which resulted from the dedicated efforts oflsolde Field at Stanford and Anna Zalucki at Canberra. The research of the authors connected with this volume was supported in part by the National Science Foundation.
Book Synopsis Elliptic Regularity Theory by : Lisa Beck
Download or read book Elliptic Regularity Theory written by Lisa Beck and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-04-08 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These lecture notes provide a self-contained introduction to regularity theory for elliptic equations and systems in divergence form. After a short review of some classical results on everywhere regularity for scalar-valued weak solutions, the presentation focuses on vector-valued weak solutions to a system of several coupled equations. In the vectorial case, weak solutions may have discontinuities and so are expected, in general, to be regular only outside of a set of measure zero. Several methods are presented concerning the proof of such partial regularity results, and optimal regularity is discussed. Finally, a short overview is given on the current state of the art concerning the size of the singular set on which discontinuities may occur. The notes are intended for graduate and postgraduate students with a solid background in functional analysis and some familiarity with partial differential equations; they will also be of interest to researchers working on related topics.

Book Synopsis Direct Methods in the Theory of Elliptic Equations by : Jindrich Necas
Download or read book Direct Methods in the Theory of Elliptic Equations written by Jindrich Necas and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-10-06 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nečas’ book Direct Methods in the Theory of Elliptic Equations, published 1967 in French, has become a standard reference for the mathematical theory of linear elliptic equations and systems. This English edition, translated by G. Tronel and A. Kufner, presents Nečas’ work essentially in the form it was published in 1967. It gives a timeless and in some sense definitive treatment of a number issues in variational methods for elliptic systems and higher order equations. The text is recommended to graduate students of partial differential equations, postdoctoral associates in Analysis, and scientists working with linear elliptic systems. In fact, any researcher using the theory of elliptic systems will benefit from having the book in his library. The volume gives a self-contained presentation of the elliptic theory based on the "direct method", also known as the variational method. Due to its universality and close connections to numerical approximations, the variational method has become one of the most important approaches to the elliptic theory. The method does not rely on the maximum principle or other special properties of the scalar second order elliptic equations, and it is ideally suited for handling systems of equations of arbitrary order. The prototypical examples of equations covered by the theory are, in addition to the standard Laplace equation, Lame’s system of linear elasticity and the biharmonic equation (both with variable coefficients, of course). General ellipticity conditions are discussed and most of the natural boundary condition is covered. The necessary foundations of the function space theory are explained along the way, in an arguably optimal manner. The standard boundary regularity requirement on the domains is the Lipschitz continuity of the boundary, which "when going beyond the scalar equations of second order" turns out to be a very natural class. These choices reflect the author's opinion that the Lame system and the biharmonic equations are just as important as the Laplace equation, and that the class of the domains with the Lipschitz continuous boundary (as opposed to smooth domains) is the most natural class of domains to consider in connection with these equations and their applications.

Download or read book Numerical Methods for Partial Differential Equations written by Seymour V. Parter and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2014-05-10 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Numerical Methods for Partial Differential Equations is a collection of papers dealing with techniques and practical solutions to problems concerning continuum mechanics, fluid dynamics, and plasma physics. One paper discusses the important considerations that lead to an efficient nonlinear dynamic finite element analysis using improved analysis techniques. Another paper describes the results obtained from fully discrete methods of higher order in time (order 3 and 4) for second order parabolic initial boundary value problems in which the equations have time dependent (or nonlinear) coefficients. Another paper reviews concepts of ellipticity of finite-difference approximations to general elliptic partial differential systems, with examples utilizing Cauchy-Riemann equations or Navier-Stokes equations. One paper describes fluid-dynamic computing using basic equations, boundary conditions, time dependent gas dynamics, shock waves, stream-function-vorticity methods, and an example on the formation of a spherical vortex. Another paper evaluates a specific problem arising in the study of the equilibrium of plasma confined in a machine of the Tokomak type. The collection is suitable for mathematicians, physicists, and investigators in the field of continuum mechanics, fluid dynamics, plasma physics.
