Based on known terrestrial reserves, and growing consumption in both developed and developing countries, key elements needed for modern industry and food production could be exhausted on Earth within 50 to 60 years. In response, it has been suggested that platinum, cobalt and other valuable elements from asteroids may be mined and sent to Earth for profit, used to build solar-power satellites and space habitats, and water processed from ice to refuel orbiting propellant depots. Looking beyond the Milky Way, there are at least 2 trillion other galaxies in the observable universe. Space colonization can roughly be said to be possible when the necessary methods of space colonization become cheap enough to meet the cumulative funds that have been gathered for the purpose, in addition to estimated profits from commercial use of space. Intergalactic travel would either have to involve voyages lasting millions of years, or a possible faster than light propulsion method based on speculative physics, such as the Alcubierre drive. There are, however, no scientific reasons for stating that intergalactic travel is impossible in principle. Uploaded human minds or AI may be transmitted to other galaxies in the hope some intelligence there would receive and activate them.

For thousands of years, humans have looked up to the skies and wondered what was beyond the stars. Once telescopes were invented, astronomers were able to gather vague information about the astronomical bodies in the solar system, but their understanding was very basic. As far back as the 1600's, authors were writing fictitious accounts about traveling to other planets as well as the life forms they encountered. It wasn't until the early 1900's that space exploration became a possibility. Since that time, drastic advances have been made, and now nothing seems impossible when it comes to space travel.The history of space exploration began when scientists developed robots and machines to gather data about planets, moons and asteroids. Since the mid-1900's, scientists have perfected their work so that they have a better idea of what our solar system is composed of. The history of space exploration began with telescopes and robots, and it has progressed to providing humans with the ability to travel through space.Mining Asteroids - Asteroids are made mostly of rock and metal, and range from a few meters wide to nearly 10 miles long. Water can be broken down in space to liquid oxygen and liquid hydrogen for rocket fuel. However, water is very expensive to get off the ground, so the plan is to take it from an asteroid to a spot in space where it can be converted into fuel.
