Book excerpt: Interfuel substitution is an issue that is — and will likely remain — an important topic of inquiry for many years, as governments around the world seek to set policies that are intended to restrain carbon emissions or steer economies toward or away from certain fuels. This book contributes to this issue by estimating short- and long-term interfuel substitution elasticities, at the aggregate and sector levels, through the use of the latest advances in microeconometrics as well as recent international data for a number of OECD and non-OECD countries.

Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2005 in the subject Business economics - Industrial Management, grade: Very Good (Sehr Gut), University of Vienna, course: International Energy Management, language: English, abstract: South Korea, the Asian peninsula of Manchuria separating the Yellow Sea and the Sea of Japan, once known to be one of the world’s poorest agrarian societies, has undertaken economic development since 1962 what has become known as the “economic miracle on the Hangang River”. Nevertheless, Korea’s remarkable economic achievements were threatened by the Asian crisis beginning in late 1997 when the Asian tiger nations suffered from overvalued currencies and a lack of regulation in the financial system led to business incest, inflated asset values, high foreign debt and many other problems. But thanks to successful foreign debt restructuring with creditor banks, the nation is currently on track to resume economic growth. “Korea’s macroeconomic performance since the crisis has been impressive, with strong real growth, low inflation, and rapidly growing official foreign reserves.” Furthermore, since the onset of the crisis, Korea has been rapidly integrating itself into the world economy. To visualize this performance Figure 1 shows the impressive economic development of Korea since 1980 and displays the differences in growth to Taiwan and Austria. With this history as one of the fastest growing economies in the world, Korea is working to become the focal point of a powerful Asian economic bloc. As a result of this overwhelming development within the last two decades, the Korean economy, as well as many other representative developing countries, has experienced both a dramatic increase in oil consumption and an upward shift in wage rates. From a general scientific point of view the relationship between energy consumption and economic growth has been the subject of intense research over the past three decades. However, the empirical evidence is ambiguous. Although numerous studies including all different parts of the world into their analysis have investigated the causal relationship between economic development and energy consumption, it is still hard to say that findings from these studies have reached an overall consensus. However, following a recent study from Wankeun Oh from the Department of Economics at the Hankuk University of Foreign Studies in Seoul, “the empirical results for the case of Korea suggest the existence of a long run bidirectional causal relationship between energy and GDP”.

Book excerpt: We investigate the demand for energy and the degree of substitutability among fossil fuels in the United States using the Normalized Quadratic (NQ) expenditure function and (to our knowledge) the longest span prices and quantities that have ever been studied before, from 1919 to 2012. In doing so, we merge the empirical energy demand systems literature with the recent financial econometrics literature, relaxing the homoskedasticity assumption and instead assuming that the covariance matrix of the errors of the flexible demand system is time-varying. We generate inference, in terms of a full set of elasticities, consistent with neoclassical microeconomic theory and the data generating process. Our results are in line with earlier findings in the literature based on shorter duration samples and different methodologies. They have important implications for climate policy intervention designed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. We show that there is a small but statistically significant substitution possibility between crude oil and natural gas, but not between crude oil and coal. We also provide evidence that natural gas is a substitute for coal when the price of coal changes, but coal is not a substitute for natural gas when the price of natural gas changes.

Book excerpt: Abstract This paper provides the first meta-analysis of the interfuel substitutability literature. The sample includes 47 studies of interfuel substitution in the industrial sector, in manufacturing industry or manufacturing sub-industries, or in the macro-economy of a variety of developed and developing countries. Meta-regressions are estimated for the six shadow elasticities of substitution between coal, oil, gas and electricity. I find that at the level of the industrial sector as a whole the oil-coal, oil-gas, oil-electricity and gas-electricity shadow elasticities of substitution are significantly greater than unity. The remaining elasticities - between coal and gas and coal and electricity - are insignificantly different from unity or zero due to their large standard errors. Substitution possibilities seem more constrained at the macro level and less constrained at lower levels of aggregation. Estimates of the elasticities of substitution from cross-section regressions are generally largest whereas fixed effects panel estimates are intermediate in magnitude, and time-series estimates are mostly much smaller. In order to obtain more precise and less biased estimates of long-run elasticities of substitution, there is a need for additional primary studies using large samples and/or the between estimator which econometric research suggests is likely to provide the best estimates of long-run elasticities.

Book excerpt: Alex Cowie As the twentieth century draws to a close, one of our greatest problems is the availability of energy. One way to study the energy problem is to resolve it into four areas; energy demand, energy sources, transportation of energy from sources to demand centers, and the optimal allocation of energy forms to demands. Each of these areas is extremely complex by itself. When efforts are made to tie them together, for example, to produce a National Policy, the complexities are compounded. Another way to study the energy problem, because of its political and so cial consequences, is to resolve it into geographical areas. Individual prov inces of Canada or states of the United States will have their concerns about energy within their geographical boundaries. As producer, consumer, or both, each wants to ensure an energy development program which will work to the maximum benefit of its citizens. Similarly, countries endeavor to pro tect their citizens and undertake energy policies that will assure either a con tinuation of the existing quality of life or - particularly in the case of "Third World" countries - a marked improvement in quality of life. These competing and conflicting goals call for a study which encompasses the whole world. Again, complexity is piled upon complexity. If the prob lem is not yet sufficiently complex, there is an equally complex question of the effect of energy production and use on the ecology.

Book excerpt: This book provides an updated and expanded overview of basic concepts of energy economics and explains how simple economic tools can be used to analyse contemporary energy issues in the light of recent developments, such as the Paris Agreement, the UN Sustainable Development Goals and new technological developments in the production and use of energy. The new edition is divided into four parts covering concepts, issues, markets, and governance. Although the content has been thoroughly revised and rationalised to reflect the current state of knowledge, it retains the main features of the first edition, namely accessibility, research-informed presentation, and extensive use of charts, tables and worked examples. This easily accessible reference book allows readers to gain the skills required to understand and analyse complex energy issues from an economic perspective. It is a valuable resource for students and researchers in the field of energy economics, as well as interested readers with an interdisciplinary background.
