Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interfuel substitution is an issue that is — and will likely remain — an important topic of inquiry for many years, as governments around the world seek to set policies that are intended to restrain carbon emissions or steer economies toward or away from certain fuels. This book contributes to this issue by estimating short- and long-term interfuel substitution elasticities, at the aggregate and sector levels, through the use of the latest advances in microeconometrics as well as recent international data for a number of OECD and non-OECD countries.

Book excerpt: Abstract This paper provides the first meta-analysis of the interfuel substitutability literature. The sample includes 47 studies of interfuel substitution in the industrial sector, in manufacturing industry or manufacturing sub-industries, or in the macro-economy of a variety of developed and developing countries. Meta-regressions are estimated for the six shadow elasticities of substitution between coal, oil, gas and electricity. I find that at the level of the industrial sector as a whole the oil-coal, oil-gas, oil-electricity and gas-electricity shadow elasticities of substitution are significantly greater than unity. The remaining elasticities - between coal and gas and coal and electricity - are insignificantly different from unity or zero due to their large standard errors. Substitution possibilities seem more constrained at the macro level and less constrained at lower levels of aggregation. Estimates of the elasticities of substitution from cross-section regressions are generally largest whereas fixed effects panel estimates are intermediate in magnitude, and time-series estimates are mostly much smaller. In order to obtain more precise and less biased estimates of long-run elasticities of substitution, there is a need for additional primary studies using large samples and/or the between estimator which econometric research suggests is likely to provide the best estimates of long-run elasticities.
Book Synopsis The Future of Electricity Demand by : Tooraj Jamasb
Download or read book The Future of Electricity Demand written by Tooraj Jamasb and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2011-09-15 with total page 507 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What will electricity and heat demand look like in a low-carbon world? Ambitious environmental targets will modify the shape of the electricity sector in the twenty-first century. 'Smart' technologies and demand-side management will be some of the key features of the future of electricity systems in a low-carbon world. Meanwhile, the social and behavioural dimensions will complement and interact with new technologies and policies. Electricity demand in the future will increasingly be tied up with the demand for heat and for transport. The Future of Electricity Demand looks into the features of the future electricity demand in light of the challenges posed by climate change. Written by a team of leading academics and industry experts, the book investigates the economics, technology, social aspects, and policies and regulations which are likely to characterize energy demand in a low-carbon world. It provides a comprehensive and analytical perspective on the future of electricity demand.
Book Synopsis Inter-Fuel Substitution, Industrial Energy Demand and Carbon Emissions by : Anoop Singh
Download or read book Inter-Fuel Substitution, Industrial Energy Demand and Carbon Emissions written by Anoop Singh and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Economic and environmental aspects of energy use continue to hold the attention of the industry as well as policy makers. Relative energy prices are often used as a policy tool to influence energy demand, inter-fuel substitution and energy efficiency, thus also addressing climate change. This book presents an analysis of the inter-fuel substitution in industrial sectors in India using Translog cost functions. Energy use behaviour across industrial sectors can be inferred from the estimated price and substitution elasticities. This work is perhaps the first attempt to use a unique disaggregated energy consumption data for over 1350 firms/plants across 14 industrial sectors. The analysis precedes a review of literature and theoretical models. We estimate separate models for the basket of energy purchased and that finally used in the production process. The estimated price and substitution elasticities are used to assess the impact of a change in energy prices on energy demand and carbon emissions in 14 Indian industries. An analysis of energy efficiency in the Indian cement industry highlights the role of energy prices, choice of technology and scale economies.

Book Synopsis ICT Investment for Energy Use in the Industrial Sectors by : Nabaz T. Khayyat
Download or read book ICT Investment for Energy Use in the Industrial Sectors written by Nabaz T. Khayyat and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-06-20 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book investigates the impact of production input factors on the market, consumer and producer energy demand characteristics in 30 industrial sectors for South Korea over the period 1980–2009, and for Japan over the period 1973-2006, with special emphasis placed on the effects of ICT investment on the demand for energy. A dynamic factor demand model is developed, accounting for the adjustment costs that are defined in terms of forgone output from current production. It addresses four key aspects of production and energy demand in manufacturing: first, it establishes the various relationships between different factors of production. Second, it investigates whether the energy demand in the industrial sectors in South Korea would be decreased or increased by substituting/complementing with other input factors such as ICT capital and labor. Third, it looks at sources of growth in the industrial sectors through decomposing the Divisia index based total factor productivity (TFP). Finally it provides appropriate policy recommendations based on these findings. The results of this study may provide industrial sectors’ stakeholders and environmental and industrial policy makers with a flexible model that has the capacity to assess outcomes of various policies under certain scenarios. The factor demand methodology described in this book is very advanced and up-to-date. It can be used when teaching advanced graduate courses and in empirically advanced research. Therefore, it is highly relevant in both teaching as a main or supplementary text and in particular as a reference handbook in conducting empirical research. The focus on ICT effects on energy use makes this book an important addition to the existing literature on industrial development.
