This book was released on 1994-06-30 with total page 526 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The current vigour in separations research principally derives from the need for pioneering separations processes in an emerging technology (biotechnology), from new societal emphases (reduction of chemical emissions into the environment), as well as from opportunities for achieving dramatic improvements in the efficiency of a number of manufacturing technologies through the development of a new generation of membranes (novel membrane applications). Accordingly, the contributions to this volume are grouped into `Membranes in Biotechnology' (11 papers), `Membranes in Environmental Technology' (6 papers), and `New Concepts' (4 papers). This is followed by one contribution each on `Energy Requirements' and `Education', i.e. membrane processes within an academic curriculum. The book thus amounts to a state-of-the-art review of applied membrane processes. Even though other texts have appeared in recent years, a more documented, practical book is needed, with a strong interaction with the collateral disciplines of materials sciences, life sciences and environmental science. This book emphasizes the need for such an integrated approach to membrane processes.

Book excerpt: Increasingly, utilities are using membrane technology to solve a wide array of water treatment challenges. The current state of knowledge regarding different aspects of membrane integration is thought to be in development, as evidenced by the continued research efforts by utilities, manufacturers, engineers, and academia. The water industry lacks specific guidance on how membranes can be integrated into a treatment process to improve treatment or capacity. The findings of this project focused on key issues of membrane integration: the benefits of pilot testing and planning, design considerations, and operation and maintenance needs. All of the participating utilities conducted pilot evaluations of membrane technologies and some continued those studies after commissioning to optimize system performance.Several of the participating utilities embarked on a comprehensive planning and approval program, which included community outreach efforts, budget planning, and scheduling for pilot testing before design. In terms of design considerations, many of the utilities experienced unique design challenges that were specific to the system being installed.

Book excerpt: Synthetic Membrane Processes: Fundamentals and Water Applications presents a summary of some of the theoretical developments in membrane and fluid transport. The book reviews water and wastewater hyperfiltration, ultrafiltration, and electrodialysis, as well as the economics of these processes. The text approaches the topics from the standpoint of chemical engineering. It provides a description of procedures for maintaining reasonable fluxes with a balanced pretreatment, cleaning, and fluid management program. The different structures of water and aqueous systems, hyperfiltration membranes, and the polarization phenomena in membrane processes are also discussed. The text provides concrete examples of the desalting experience and water and wastewater treatment in the United States, Europe, and Japan. The book targets those in the water and wastewater field and is also generally useful for teaching and for anyone interested in adapting membrane technology to separation or concentration applications.

Membranes are among the most important engineering components in use today, and each year more and more effective uses for membrane technologies are found - for example: water purification, industrial effluent treatment, solvent dehydration by per-vaporation, recovery of volatile organic compounds, protein recovery, bioseparations and many others. The pace of change in the membrane industry has been accelerating rapidly in recent years, occasioned in part by the demand of end-users, but also as a result of the investment in R&D by manufacturers. To reflect these changes the author has obtained the latest information from some of the leading suppliers in the business. In one complete volume this unique handbook gives practical guidance to using selected membrane processes in individual industries while also providing a useful guide to equipment selection and usage.
