It is written with singular quietude, with the most entire negation of the merely rhetorical; but each word, each phrase, is selected with perfect judgment, is the fittest that could be found for the expression of the thought which it carries. Evidently this strange and beautiful book is one to whose production many hours Of patient labour have been unsparingly given, - and given wisely, for they have turned it into an exquisitely polished work of art. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memoir and Remains, Vol. 1 of 2 This little book is the outcome of a desire on the part of his friends for some per manent memorial of thelife and work of one who was not only regarded by them with feelings of high esteem, but whose attractive personality inspired warm affec tion in those who knew him best. The few pages which deal with his biography are the brief record of a career cut short before it had attained the plenitude of its power: still, there was more than promise; there was performance of a very substantial kind, performance which would certainly have led to wider recognition and higher preferment had life been spared. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memoirs, Vol. 1 of 2 It happened once in Boston, in the year 1861 or 1862, that I was at a dinner of the Atlantic Club, such as was held every Saturday, when the question was raised as to whether any man had ever written a complete and candid autobiography. Emerson, who was seated by me at the right, suggested the "Confessions" of Rousseau. I objected that it was full of untruths, and that for plain candour it was surpassed by the "Life of Casanova." Of this work (regarding which Carlyle has said, "Whosoever has looked therein, let him wash his hands and be unclean until even") neither Emerson nor Lowell, nor Palfrey nor Agassiz, nor any of the others present seemed to have any knowledge, until Dr. Holmes, who was more adventurous, admitted he knew somewhat thereof. Now, as I had read it thrice through, I knew it pretty well. I reflected on this, but came to the conclusion that perhaps the great reason why the world has so few and frank autobiographies is really because the world exacts too much. It is no more necessary to describe everything cynically than it is to set forth all our petty diseases in detail. There are many influences which, independent of passion or shame, do far more to form character. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Grant, Vol. 1 of 2 In preparing these volumes for the public, I have entered upon the task with the sincere desire to avoid doing injustice to any one, whether on the National or Confederate side, other than the un avoidable injustice of not making mention often where special mention is due. There must be many errors of omission in this work, because the subject is too large to be treated of in two volumes in such way as to do justice to all the officers and men en gaged. There were thousands of instances, during the rebellion. Of individual, company, regimental and brigade deeds of heroism which deserve special men tion and are not here alluded to. The troops en gaged in them will have to look to the detailed reports of their individual commanders for the full history of those deeds. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memoirs of Benjamin Franklin, Vol. 1 of 2 Observations such as these, by the London editor, carry in themselves the evi dence of being written by some. Person intimately conversant with Franklin and his contemporaries, and with the history of the memorable period in which he held a place so pre-eminent. Before proceeding in the regular order proposed for this preface, it may be proper to dispose of the whole of this subject in a con nected form, and to exhibit the matter offered in his defence by W. T. Franklin, as well as some facts not before published. The vicissitudes of the revolution, particularly the occupation of Philadelphia by the British army in 1777, had exposed the papers and the library, which was ample and abundantly curious, and the manuscripts of Dr. Franklin, to dispersion; the family of Dr. F., after the peace, had not been successful in collecting much of the dispersed matter; and to a certainty much is still unrecovered; the frag ments of the library which remained in America was most remarkably neglected, and unappreciated; in 1805, the remains of what had been unappropriated by the legatee, were thrown, like lumber, into the hands of a foreign bookseller, to be disposed of among the mass of second-hand books; some few parcels were caught at by curious and studious individuals, and a few transferred with a niggardly and shabby parsimony to some libraries which should have taken means to secure the whole - for there were no books collected by Franklin which had not some pecu liar value ih relation to universal knowledge. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memoirs of Remarkable Misers, Vol. 1 of 2 It cannot be denied that in detailing the history of the different individuals in this col lection of the brotherhood, there are in the main points of great similarity. Though many of the acts of this class of persons are hid from the view of the stranger, yet there is enough in the differences of selfish display herein related to excite interest in the reader, and impart a lesson to those who feel a tendency to gratify avaricious desires. One or two foreign examples more might have been added, but the main features are essentially the same as those which are here detailed, avarice being a disease common to all natures, but most so to those in which the necessity for its existence is least apparent. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Diplomatic Memoirs, Vol. 1 of 2 The spirited political campaign of 1872 closed with the triumphant reelection of General Grant as President of the United States. Indiana was classed as one of the doubtful States, and the result of the October election was looked forward to with anxiety by both political parties as indicating the trend of public sentiment. Oliver P. Morton, the leader of his party in the State and one of the foremost statesmen of his day, was a candidate for reelection to the Senate of the United States, and he felt that his political life was at stake in the contest. As Chairman of the Republican State Committee, I conducted the campaign which resulted in the choice of a Republican majority in the legislature, and pointed unmistakably to the success of President Grant. Senator Morton was greatly pleased, and when the returns were all in, he invited Mrs. Foster and myself to a private dinner at his residence in Indianapolis. When it was concluded, I accompanied the Senator to his private office, and he at once said that to me more than any one else was due the decisive party victory, and that he personally felt under great obligations to me which he desired to discharge. He told me to take the "Blue Book" (the register of federal officers of the United States) and select the office I wanted, and that without further trouble on my part he would see that it was given me. SO I one day gave a marvellous account of the great Volatile Chelidonian or Flying Turtle of Surinam, of which a specimen had just arrived in New York. It had a shell as of diamonds blent with emeralds and rubies, and bat-like wings of iridescent hue surpassing the opal, and a tail like a serpent. Our contemporary, nothing doubting, at once published this as original matter in a letter from New York, and had to bear the responsibility. But I did not invest my inventiveness wisely; I should have shared the idea with Barnum. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memoirs of a Revolutionist, Vol. 1 of 2: With Portraits The Autobiographies which we owe to great minds have in former times generally been of one of three types: So far I went astray, thus I found the true path' (st. Augustine); or, So bad was I, but who dares to consider himself better!' (rousseau); or, 'this is the way a genius has slowly been evolved from within and by favourable surroundings (goethe). Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Memoir of Ralph Waldo Emerson, Vol. 1 of 2 My object in this book has been to offer to the readers and friends of Emerson some further illustrations, some details of his outward and inward history that may fill out and define more closely the image of him they already have, rather than to attempt a picture which should make him known to strangers, or set him forth in due relation to his surroundings or to the world at large. The position of literary executor to which he appointed me, and the desire of his family that I would write a memoir of him, have given me access to his unpublished writings (including many letters confided to me by some of his most valued correspondents, to whom I render hearty thanks), and to sources of information in the memories of persons who knew him in his early years and in his home. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memoirs and Letters of Cardinal De Bernis, Vol. 1 of 2 I have totally abandoned poetry for the last eleven years, he writes to Voltaire in 1761. I knew that my little talent injured me in my profession and at Court; I ceased to prac tise it without regret, because I did not think much of it, and I have never liked whatever was mediocre. I write no more verses and I read few, unless they are, like yours, full of soul, strength, and harmony; I prefer history. It is necessary, therefore, in speaking of Bernis to mark his epochs distinctly, if we desire to be just towards one Of the most graceful and most polished minds of the last century, towards a man Of real capacity more extensive than people think, a man who knew how to redeem his literary weaknesses and his political pliancy by a decent and useful middle-age and by an honour able end. Documents recently issuing from the archives of the Vatican cast light upon the second half Of his career, while he was ambassador Of France in Rome. To these I shall presently refer; but first I desire to speak of the more frivolous Abbé de Bernis, from whom we shall see the serious man insensibly emerging.
