Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The volume includes a collection of peer-reviewed contributions from among those presented at the FNE, the main conference organized every two years by the Mexican Statistical Society (AME), and the 2020 AME Virtual Meeting. Statistical research in Latin America is prolific and research networks span both within and outside the region. As much of the work is typically carried out and published in Spanish, a large portion of the interested public is denied access to interesting findings, and the goal of this volume is therefore to provide access to selected works from Mexican collaborators and their international research networks to a wider audience. It may be especially attractive to academics interested in the latest methodological advances, while professionals from other disciplines may also find value in these new tools for data analysis. In 2021, the conference broadly focused on the interdisciplinary aspects of Statistics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this history of childbirth and contraception in Mexico, Nora E. Jaffary chronicles colonial and nineteenth-century beliefs and practices surrounding conception, pregnancy and its prevention, and birth. Tracking Mexico's transition from colony to nation, Jaffary demonstrates the central role of reproduction in ideas about female sexuality and virtue, the development of modern Mexico, and the growth of modern medicine in the Latin American context. The story encompasses networks of people in all parts of society, from state and medical authorities to mothers and midwives, husbands and lovers, employers and neighbors. Jaffary focuses on key topics including virginity, conception, contraception and abortion, infanticide, "monstrous" births, and obstetrical medicine. Her approach yields surprising insights into the emergence of modernity in Mexico. Over the course of the nineteenth century, for example, expectations of idealized womanhood and female sexual virtue gained rather than lost importance. In addition, rather than being obliterated by European medical practice, features of pre-Columbian obstetrical knowledge, especially of abortifacients, circulated among the Mexican public throughout the period under study. Jaffary details how, across time, localized contexts shaped the changing history of reproduction, contraception, and maternity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Geopolitical Landscapes of Donald Trump examines the role that local actors in Mexico, Central America and the United States have played in shaping the Mexico-Guatemala transborder region. From governments to business and organized crime, scholars from both Mexico and the United States introduce a sophisticated approach beyond diplomatic communiqués to tell the story of how Mexico became the wall that Donald Trump promised to build. This is a story of how governments defended their sovereignty in their discourse, only to pave the way for punitive policies that hurt their fellow citizens. The inequalities brought by the extractive economy, the homicides and displacement wrought by the systemic violence, the exodus pushed by environmental degradation and the political crisis generated by economic, political, and military elites need to be addressed to make the transborder region livable for its own population. Geopolitical Landscapes of Donald Trump will be of interest to scholars and students of international relations and Latin American Studies. It will also be of interest to policymakers, practitioners, and general readers who are following US-Mexico and US-Central America relations.

Although the United States has witnessed a sharp drop in illegal border crossings in the past decade alongside an enormous increase in government activities to prevent illegal immigration, there remains little understanding of the role enforcement has played. Better data and analyses to assist lawmakers in crafting more successful policies and to support administration officials in implementing these policies are long overdue.
