Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this volume is to further develop the relationship between culture and manifold phenomena of creativity, innovation and entrepreneurship in order to promote further and better understanding how, why, and when these phenomena are manifested themselves across different cultures. Currently, cross-cultural research is one of the most dynamically and rapidly growing areas. At the same time, creativity, inventiveness, innovation, and entrepreneurship are championed in the literature as the critical element that is vital not just for companies, but also for the development of societies. A sizable body of research demonstrates that cultural differences may foster or inhibit creative, inventive, innovative and entrepreneurial activities; and each culture has its own strengths and weaknesses in these regards. Better understanding of cultural diversity in these phenomena can help to build on strengths and overcome weaknesses. Cross-cultural studies in this field represent a comparatively new class of interdisciplinary research. This is a field where cultural, sociological, psychological, historical, economic, management, technology and business studies closely intersect. In this book, a global team of researchers representing Europe, Asia, and the Americas review, analyze, structure, systematize and discuss various concepts, assumptions, speculations, theories, and empirical research which focus on the effect of national cultures on creativity, invention, innovation, and entrepreneurship. They argue that national culture is not only an extremely important determinant of innovation and business development, but also demonstrate that some aspects relating to these phenomena may be universal among all cultures, thereby identifying those factors that may easily be transferred across cultures from those that are unique to their specific context.

They pursue several different perspectives and focus on the key issues and most significant developments in the field. The authors illustrate current conceptions of entrepreneurship research and identify critical methodological and theoretical questions. They also discuss innovations in European research methodologies which often result from holistic and systemic approaches, as well as from multi-disciplinary research. They move on to study entrepreneurship, innovation and culture as a set of interrelated fields, highlighting the role of culture in the growing phenomenon of entrepreneurship. They demonstrate how culture has to be understood in a broad sense and at different levels, such as professional culture, corporate culture and national culture. In this way, the book provides powerful tools to help identify, elaborate and understand the importance of European cultural roots within the international entrepreneurship landscape. Including detailed comparative studies at both the national and corporate level, this book will be informative reading for researchers, students and practitioners interested in the education, management issues and practices surrounding entrepreneurship. It will also be of value to those working in the fields of technology and innovation policy, and to anyone wanting to understand the unique European notions of entrepreneurship, which are often quite distinct from current American views.

Domingo Ribeiro Soriano, Academy of Management Learning & Education . . . a commendable source of reference for entrepreneurship education researchers and practitioners alike, and would make a worthy addition to a library s collection. David Douglas, International Journal of Entrepreneurial Behaviour and Research In this, the second volume of the Handbook of Research in Entrepreneurship Education, leading international scholars highlight the unique characteristics and rich variety of research in entrepreneurship education. They adopt several different perspectives, focusing on key issues and significant developments in the field, and highlighting emergent new insights. The 35 contributors span 11 countries and three continents, demonstrating not only the richness but also the complexity of the field in terms of culture, geography and institutional, ethical and political systems. Book excerpt: Collectively, the authors present an informative overview of some of the best European research in entrepreneurship that exists at present. In addition, the variation in research traditions and approaches offer the reader an interesting insight into the various disciplinary perspectives that can shed light on entrepreneurial activities, including insights from psychology, sociology, finance and strategy. The attempt to examine both individual and firm-level analysis is also a strength of this book, given that the majority of entrepreneurship research tends to focus on just one of these streams and there is a dearth of work that is able to integrate and understand both dimensions simultaneously. . . the book provides value for money for those whom entrepreneurship research within a European context is a particular interest. Jean Clarke, International Journal of Entrepreneurial Behaviour and Research This book brings together some of Europe s finest scholars, showcasing the richness, diversity and quality of European entrepreneurship research. Collectively, the authors present an authoritative overview of state-of-the-art research on current entrepreneurship themes. This book is a must read for scholars, policymakers, and students interested in staying updated about the current state of entrepreneurship research. Roy Thurik, Erasmus University Rotterdam, The Netherlands This book provides an invaluable, state-of-the-art overview of current European research in the field of entrepreneurship. It focuses on four themes, each of which illustrates a key dimension in the overall theme: entrepreneurs and their role in entrepreneurship entrepreneurship in family businesses performance of new ventures and entrepreneurial processes. Nevertheless, much of the research and scholarship in entrepreneurship has remained elusive to academics, policymakers and other researchers, in large part because the field is informed by a broad spectrum of disciplines, including management, finance, economics, policy, sociology, and psychology, often pursued in isolation from each other. Since its original publication in 2003, the Handbook of Entrepreneurship Research has served as the definitive resource in the field, bringing together contributions from leading scholars in these disciplines to present a holistic, multi-dimensional approach. This new edition, fully revised and updated, and including several new chapters, covers all of the primary topics in entrepreneurship, including entrepreneurial behavior, risk and opportunity recognition, equity financing, business culture and strategy, innovation, and the impact of entrepreneurship on economic growth and development. Featuring an integrative introduction, extensive literature reviews and reference lists, the Handbook will continue to serve as a roadmap to the rapidly evolving and dynamic field of entrepreneurship.

Book excerpt: The tradition of European scholars on entrepreneurship has been consolidated during the last three decades and an increasingly distinct European school of thought has emerged as a consequence. This development provides as solid base for the future development of the field where Europe and its entrepreneurship scholars will play an increasingly prominent role in the development of the field. The distinct focus of the book is key European features – ‘contexts matter’ – to promote and stimulate what ‘European’ might mean in any given context. The book valorizes different contexts and key strengths of the European perspective.

Book excerpt: This open access book covers the main issues, challenges and techniques concerning the application of qualitative methodologies to the study of migration. It discusses theoretical, epistemological and empirical questions that must be considered before, during, and after undertaking qualitative research in migration studies. It also covers recent innovative developments and addresses the key issues and major challenges that qualitative migration research may face at different stages i.e. crafting the research questions, defining approaches, developing concepts and theoretical frameworks, mapping categories, selecting cases, dealing with concerns of self-reflection, collecting and processing empirical evidence through various techniques, including visual data, dealing with ethical issues, and developing policy-research dialogues. Each chapter discusses relative strengths and limitations of qualitative research. The chapters also identify the main drivers for qualitative research development in migration studies. It is a unique volume as it brings together a multidisciplinary perspective as well as illustrations of different issues derived from the research experience of the recognized authors. One additional value of this book is its geographic focus on Europe. It seeks to explore theoretical and methodological issues that are raised by distinctive features of the European context. This volume will be a useful reference source for scholars and professionals in migration studies and in social sciences as well. The publication is also addressed to graduate and post-graduate students and, more generally, to those who embark on the task of doing qualitative research for the first time in the field of migration.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inhaltsangabe:Introduction: From the 1940s to the 1980s large enterprises in Europe was clearly the dominant form of business organisation. Small businesses were believed to be less efficient than their larger counterparts and only marginally involved in innovative activities. This has gradually changed to the extent that, at present, national and supranational policy-makers have given strong priority to entrepreneurship and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Scholars argue that the outlook of the European economies has undergone a transformation from the managed to the entrepreneurial economy. This sharp change of direction has been primarily driven by a combination of factors including: the growing importance of the knowledge-economy in terms of occupational choices, factors of production and changing patterns of commercial activities; concerns for high unemployment rates, declining international competitiveness in comparison to the USA and Japan and rates of economic growth as well as an evidence of shifting patterns of consumer demand. Evidently, a new vision of the EU s economic strategy has been conceived in terms of the belief that economic, social and environmental goals must go hand in hand in the 21st century. In the centre of this vision is the innovative entrepreneur who is believed to be a major ingredient for the revitalisation of European economies. The subject of entrepreneurship has been the topic of scholarship and research in a variety of academic fields. The interdisciplinary nature of scholarship reflects the subject as entrepreneurship itself is a multifaceted social and economic phenomenon. However, since there is no explicit horizontal entrepreneurship policy domain at the European level, the topic has not caught sufficient attention from European Union public policy analysts. The main purpose of the dissertation is to discuss how the EU accommodates the image of entrepreneurial economy within its policy-making apparatus. A generalisation of European entrepreneurial economy has been made which underlines the supranational level of analysis and gives more attention to what has been undertaken collectively rather than individually by Member States. The dissertation begins in the following chapter by addressing the question of how entrepreneurship is understood and defined at the conceptual level. While it is clear that no specific definition of entrepreneurship exists, most studies conclude that it centres [...]
