Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Transboundary transport of air pollution has been a topic of scientific research for several decades and has also been addressed already by environmental policies. However, the importance of air pollution transport on the largest - intercontinental - scales, has been recognized only recently. It was soon found that the meteorological and chemical processes involved in intercontinental pollution transport are distinctly different from those occurring during regional-scale transport, and thus new scientific methodologies are required for their study. In this book, leading scientists review the current state of knowledge in this emerging field of research, providing the reader with a process understanding of global-scale transport and its influence on the atmosphere's chemical composition. Long-range transport of anthropogenic pollution is contrasted with that of pollution produced by natural processes such as dust storms or forest fires. Furthermore, the prospects for international management of intercontinental transport of anthropogenic pollution are discussed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent advances in air pollution monitoring and modeling capabilities have made it possible to show that air pollution can be transported long distances and that adverse impacts of emitted pollutants cannot be confined to one country or even one continent. Pollutants from traffic, cooking stoves, and factories emitted half a world away can make the air we inhale today more hazardous for our health. The relative importance of this "imported" pollution is likely to increase, as emissions in developing countries grow, and air quality standards in industrial countries are tightened. Global Sources of Local Pollution examines the impact of the long-range transport of four key air pollutants (ozone, particulate matter, mercury, and persistent organic pollutants) on air quality and pollutant deposition in the United States. It also explores the environmental impacts of U.S. emissions on other parts of the world. The book recommends that the United States work with the international community to develop an integrated system for determining pollution sources and impacts and to design effective response strategies. This book will be useful to international, federal, state, and local policy makers responsible for understanding and managing air pollution and its impacts on human health and well-being.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes current scientific understanding of European transboundary air pollution starting with an historical account. The way science has become a driving force for policy action, including the models used, the economic instruments and the complexity of science-policy interaction, are dealt with in some detail. The book closes by treating expected future trends, including the accumulating evidence of intercontinental transport of air pollutants and the globalisation of air pollution management related to its strong links with climate change. The primary target group of this book is university students in environmental science and related areas. It is also likely to be of interest to professionals working in environmental administration, in particular those with emphasis on air pollution.

Book excerpt: The 2007 interim assessment report provides a first report from the Task Force, which was mandated to obtain a better understanding of intercontinental transport of air pollution and to provide estimates of source-receptor relationships for intercontinental air pollution. The report aims to provide the Convention with necessary information for its first review of the 1999 Gothenburg Protocol. It is based on written contributions from 50 international experts and the deliberations of the Task Force at its third meeting in 2007 in Reading, United Kingdom, and addresses important aspects of assessment of intercontinental transport of air pollution.

This book was released on 2005 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The development of European policies on air pollution prevention is currently in an intensive phase. The European Commission Clean Air for Europe (CAFE) programme is preparing an air pollution strategy and the Convention on Long-range Air Pollution may start a review of the Gothenburg Protocol during 2005. On the 25th-27th of October 2004 a workshop on review and assessment of the scientific basis and tools employed in this policy work was held to provide guidance to the policy development. Future needs of scientific support in a longer perspective were also discussed. A large part of the workshop was focussed on the role of airborne particles. Human health effects caused by exposure to airborne particles have received increasing attention in recent years and concerns of health effects are today the main driving force for air pollution prevention and research. In addition to this, new concepts for describing effects of acidification and ozone are being introduced, providing more accurate and relevant descriptions of ecosystem effects to changes in air pollution levels. The needs for considering air pollution on a hemispheric scale were also highlighted. This workshop was organised by the ASTA programme, the Swedish research programme on air pollution, in co-operation with the Nordic Council of Ministers, the EU CAFE programme and CLRTAP.
