IEEE is currently revising the interconnection Standard 1547 and in its project P1547 it is anticipated that the new version will include ride through requirements for distributed generation to enhance the stability of the system. Extending existing Wind and PV models with next generation controls evaluate the effectiveness of these new requirements. The extended PV model is added to an IEEE 34-node test feeder and the active distribution network’s fault response is compared to the WECC simplified model for distributed PV system used for bulk system stability studies. It was found the draft IEEE P1547 ride-through requirements increase the amount of PV systems that remain connected post fault. The parameters of the WECC simplified model for distributed PV systems are optimized to match the results from the IEEE-34 node test system with distributed PV. This allows the active distribution system to be simplified for bulk system stability studies and improves the computational performance.

Book excerpt: While distributed energy resources (DER) may provide benefits to the user, environment, and electric utility, the fundamental paradigm for connection with the existing electric system is unknown. To determine the relevant challenges and opportunities associated with this interconnection, the impact of DER on the electric distribution system is assessed through theory, simulation in Matlab/Simulink, and experiment. In all aspects, DER addition without control can result in nuisance behavior such as harmonics, sags, overvoltages, and increased system stress. Yet proper attention, control, and communication can avoid these conditions and even improve system characteristics, thus enabling the DER to become a system asset. The generator-load interaction is simulated by combining measured data from the built environment with a dynamic fuel cell model. An active power filter (APF) capability is deemed necessary at the interconnection because the inverter follows the voltage and does not provide current harmonics directly. With APF and energy storage, the connection can exhibit ideal behavior from all perspectives. When the source and generator-load bus are separated by a line, the inverter-APF can additionally prevent voltage sags and harmonics. This benefit is observed experimentally by combining several common non-linear loads with an APF. The effect of DER on an entire distribution circuit is simulated by adding generation to four sample distribution circuits that each capture behavior found in existing systems. The effects vary with location, but overvoltages can occur with generation as low as 10% of the rated circuit load. Existing local control strategies, such as local voltage regulation (LVR) and real power curtailment can avoid many of these overvoltages, but neither control strategy addresses all of the challenges. The location-based effect of DER can be predicted be linearizing its impact into a voltage change potential (VCP) associated with those circuit parameters. The VCP linearization well captures the modeled behavior of the circuit and is used to create a VCP-based control strategy, which provides voltage regulation for all cases. With additional communication, other functions such as reactive power support, voltage support, capacitor protection, and sharing between multiple DER can be implemented.

Book excerpt: This thesis investigates the impact of: i) the low voltage ride-through and dynamic voltage support capability; ii) the active current recovery rate; iii) the local voltage control; and iv) the plant-level voltage control of large-scale photovoltaic systems on short-term voltage stability and fault-induced delayed voltage recovery as well as transient and frequency stability. The power system dynamic performance is analysed using state-of-the-art methods, such as phasor mode time-domain simulations and the calculation of the critical clearing time that determines the stability margin. Moreover, the recently developed Kullback-Leibler divergence measure is applied to assess the quality of the voltage recovery. Drawbacks of this metric are outlined and a novel metric, the so-called voltage recovery index, is defined that quantifies the delayed voltage recovery more systematically. The studies are performed with a generic photovoltaic system model and typical model parameters are used that were determined in collaboration with a manufacturer. The stability analysis is performed in DIgSILENT PowerFactory using: i) a one-load infinite-bus system; and ii) an IEEE multi-machine voltage stability test system, namely the Nordic test system. The results show that with the adequate control of photovoltaic systems, power system dynamic performance can be significantly improved.
