This book was released on 2016 with total page 115 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sexual harassment is an issue that occurs in healthcare professions and on college campuses nationwide. Athletic trainers employed at the collegiate setting are healthcare professionals who work in close conjunction with student-athletes, which may predispose a risk of a sexual harassment occurrence. A study was conducted to investigate the sexual harassment of athletic trainers and athletic training students by student athletes at the collegiate setting. A Qualtrics survey, containing closed- and open-ended questions, was sent out to 297 CAATE-accredited athletic training program directors; the athletic training staff at these institutions were also sent the survey as well. The program directors were asked to send the survey to the students currently enrolled in the program. Quantitative data were analyzed using Qualtrics and the qualitative data were analyzed using themes and coding. The study revealed that athletic trainers and athletic training students were sexually harassed by student-athletes on at least one occasion. 40% of the respondents stated being sexually harassed by a student-athlete, and 59% observed sexual harassment of a member of the athletic training staff on at least one instance.

Book excerpt: Researchers and administrators have investigated the educational and developmental outcomes of participation in college and university sport for over 80 years (Curtis & McTeer, 1990). Unfortunately, empirical results are negligible, even contradictory. Some findings support the educational and developmental value of university sport (Curtis & McTeer, 1990; Henschen & Fry, 1984; Pascarella & Smart, 1991; Ryan, 1989), others oppose it (Adler & Adler, 1985, 1987, 1991; Blinde, 1989; Danylchuk, 1995; Eitzen & Purdy, 1986; Leonard, 1986; Martens, 1985). The purpose of the current study was to explore the psychosocial development of Canadian student-athletes across university using a qualitative methodology. Multiple in-depth interviews were conducted with eight male and female university athletes. Inductive analysis following procedures outlined by Côté, Salmela and Russell (1995) was conducted and revealed two higher order categories, developmental processes and developmental outcomes. Developmental processes described the change and interrelationships between three major spheres in the lives of the participants: the athletic, academic and social spheres. Developmental outcomes reflected the participants' progress or lack thereof on a range of age-appropriate developmental challenges. Both are reviewed in relation to the educational and developmental literature related to intercollegiate athletics. Implications for youth sport in Canada are discussed.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to determine how conflict was perceived among intercollegiate athletes. This study measured conflict as the difference between how an individual perceived his/her athletic performance and how he/she perceived the team's view of his/her athletic performance among individuals with Type A and non-Type A personalities and team or individual sport participants. The results of this study indicated that there were some individual question differences between Type A and non-Type A personality athletes and team and individual sport athletes regarding how they perceived themselves athletically, how they viewed their teammates' perceptions of their athletic ability, and their perception of their coaches.
Book Synopsis Using Sport Psychology in the Athletic Training Room by : Karin J. Schult
Download or read book Using Sport Psychology in the Athletic Training Room written by Karin J. Schult and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Certified Athletic Trainers (ATC) have a critical role in collegiate athletic settings and are in close contact with athletes. Psychology plays an important role in the lives of athletes, yet ATCs may not have the training to differentiate between normal stress in athletes and real psychological problems. The primary purpose of this study was to describe perceptions of ATCs regarding their qualifications to use psychological techniques when dealing with athletes, in addition to describing accessibility and incidence of referral to psychological services. Two hundred schools from two NCAA Divisions (I and II) were randomly selected and sent a questionnaire to be completed by a certified staff athletic trainer. The results indicated Division I schools have greater access and referrals to sport psychologists than do Division II schools. It was also evident that athletic trainers knew they need more education to properly implement certain psychological techniques when dealing with their athletes.
Book Synopsis Psychological Impact of Injury by : Laura L. Harris
Download or read book Psychological Impact of Injury written by Laura L. Harris and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: Pain, limited range of motion, and decreased strength are signs and symptoms that are commonly suffered by student-athletes following injury. However, denial, depression, anger, anxiety, and fear can also occur as a result of injury. Although most athletic trainers are well prepared to care for the physical ailments associated with injury, some are much less adept at designing rehabilitation and treatment programs aimed at addressing psychological reactions. The potential for helping athletic trainers recognize both the physical and psychological ramifications of injury begins with academic preparation. Currently, undergraduate athletic training students are expected to complete course work that addresses twenty different subject matter areas. Yet, only one of the twenty subject matter areas addresses the psychological component of health care. This apparent under-representation of psychosocial intervention in the curricular preparation of athletic trainers may not adequately address the complex nature of injury and its effect on student-athletes.
