Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book covers the basic, mainly classical, physics of the properties of solids and liquids. The main emphasis is on macroscopic characteristics of materials, although their is some discussion of the atomic or molecular phenomena that underlie the macroscopic effects. Topics that are discussed in detail include the elastic properties of solids, with applications to acoustic waves and the deformation and stability of rods and struts; static and dynamic properties of liquids, with applications to interfacial phenomena and fluid flow characteristics; and diffusion in solids and liquids, with applications to Brownian motion, heat conduction and creep. The coverage combines treatments of the more traditional aspects of these topics with details of developments, such as novel materials, catastrophe theory and soliton propagation. This textbook will be suitable for second- and third-year undergraduates in universities and polytechnics taking courses in the properties of condensed matters in departments of physics, materials science and to some extent in engineering.

Book excerpt: This book is the proceedings of the Sixth Battelle Colloquium on the Science of Materials. The Colloquium was devoted to a new field of materials science in which computers are used to conduct the experiments. Although the computer methods used have reached a high degree of sophistication, the underlying principles are relatively straightforward and well understood. The interatomic force laws - a vital input into these computations - however are less well understood. Interatomic Potentials and Simulation of Lattice Defects primarily discusses the validity of a variety of force laws - either from a theoretical point of view or through comparisons of experimental results and those obtained with computer simulation. The format used in previous Battelle Institute Colloquia is followed. The opening session was aimed at providing an overall view of the field of interatomic forces and defect calculations by major contributors. It was led by Dr. G. H. Vineyard, one of the pioneers in this field. The second day was devoted to research papers on theoretical and experimental aspects of interatomic forces. The remaining days were devoted to research papers on computer simulation of the four types of defects: point defects, line defects, surface defects, and volume defects.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This two-volume treatment grew out of lectures the author gave at the "Ecole Poly technique Federale de Lausanne" during the years 1975-1980 for graduate students in experimental physics in their last year of study. It is written by an experimentalist with some interest in theory and is ad dressed mainly to experimentalists, but also to theoreticians interested in experiments. This treatment tries to bridge the gap between theory and experiments; it should assist experimentalists in the interpretation of their data in the vast field of lattice dynamics. An attempt has been made to provide not only the basic concepts but also a working knowledge in this field of solid-state physics. In this first volume, the basic concepts of the physics of phonons are developed and illustrated by many examples; it provides the background necessary for the interpretation of most experimental results. The second volume, which is in preparation, is devoted to experimental techniques, the interpretation of experiments, and discussion of phenomena which are directly related with phonons. The book is designed for introductory courses at the graduate level. It is believed that the book will also prove useful to those graduate students starting research in this or related fields, as well as to many workers already active in this branch of solid-state physics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Existing texts on the statistical mechanics of liquids treat only spherical molecules. However, nearly all fluids of practical interest are composed of non-spherical molecules that are often dipolar or exhibit other kinds of electrostatic forces. This book describes the statistical mechanical theory of fluids of non-spherical molecules and its application to the calculation of physical properties, and is a sequel to Theory of Molecular Fluids. Volume 1: Fundamentals by C.G. Gray and K.E. Gubbins. The emphasis is on the new phenomena that arise due to the non-spherical nature of the intermolecular forces, such as new phase transitions, structural features and dielectric effects. It contains chapters on the thermodynamic properties of pure and mixed fluids, surface properties, X-ray and neutron diffraction structure factors, dielectric properties and spectroscopic properties. The book is aimed at beginning graduate students and research workers in chemistry, physics, materials science and engineering.

Book excerpt: Atomistic simulations of metals under irradiation are indispensable for understanding damage processes at time- and length-scales beyond the reach of experiment. Previously, such simulations have largely ignored the effect of electronic excitations on the atomic dynamics, even though energy exchange between atoms and electrons can have significant effects on the extent and nature of radiation damage. This thesis presents the results of time-dependent tight-binding simulations of radiation damage, in which the evolution of a coupled system of energetic classical ions and quantum mechanical electrons is correctly described. The effects of electronic excitations in collision cascades and ion channeling are explored and a new model is presented, which makes possible the accurate reproduction of non-adiabatic electronic forces in large-scale classical molecular dynamics simulations of metals.

Book excerpt: Message from The Taniguchi Foundation Dr. Kanamori, Distinguished Guests and Friends: The Taniguchi Foundation wishes to welcome the participants of the nine teenth International Symposium on the Theory of Condensed Matter, who have come from within this country and from different parts of the world. The concept of the symposium is unique in that participants, both Japanese and from abroad, are limited in number to small discussion groups, and live together, although for a short period, as a close-knit community. We feel that this kind of environment will assist towards the strengthening of understanding and the fostering of friendship among the attendees. It is easy to talk about, but difficult to realize, the ideal of international friendship and understanding in a world which is steadily growing smaller. So far, the Foundation has invited a total of 149 participants in this division from 24 foreign countries and 299 participants from Japan. And we are all friends. We hope and trust that even after they have reached the heights of academic fame during the coming decades, the participants will continue to join forces and help to forge closer bonds of friendship and cooperation that will make major contributions not only to academia, but also towards world peace and the welfare of mankind. We hope that all the participants will return home with warm memories of both this symposium and the pleasant times that we have shared. Thank you.
