Book Synopsis Interaction of a Swirling Jet with a Free Surface by : Michael S. Feyedelem
Download or read book Interaction of a Swirling Jet with a Free Surface written by Michael S. Feyedelem and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The turbulent flow field of a swirling jet issuing from a nozzle, beneath and parallel to a free surface has been studied in as much detail as possible using a three-component laser Doppler velocimeter and flow visualization. The results have shown that the swirl leads to the faster spreading and quicker mixing of the jet. For strongly swirling jets (S = 0.522), the similiarity is not reached within ten diameters downstream. The results have also shown that both the acial and tangential velocity components decrease outward from the jet axis, naturall leading to centrifugal instabilities. This, in turn, leads to the creation of large scale coherent structures at the periphery of the jet, particularly when it is in the vicinity of the free surface. The turbulent shear stresses exhibit anisotropic behavior, the largest always being in the plane passing through the jet axis. The change of TKE with S is not monotonic. It is maximum for S - 0.265, smallest for S = 0.50, and has an intermediate value for S - 0.522. This is due to the occurrence of vortex breakdown and the resulting intensification of the turbulence within the jet prior to its exit from the nozzle.

Book Synopsis Theoretical Approaches to Turbulence by : D.L. Dwoyer
Download or read book Theoretical Approaches to Turbulence written by D.L. Dwoyer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Turbulence is the lIDst natural nDde of fluid lIDtion, and has been the subject of scientific study for all Dst a century. During this period, various ideas and techniques have evolved to nDdel turbulence. Following Saffman, these theoretical approaches can be broadly divided into four overlapping categories -- (1) analytical lIDdelling, (2) physical lIDdelling, (3) phenomenologicalllDdelling, and (4) nurerical lIDdelling. With the purpose of stmtnarizing our =ent understanding of these theoretical approaches to turbulence, recognized leaders (fluid dynamicists, mathematicians and physicists) in the field were invited to participate in a formal workshop during October 10-12, 1984, sponsored by The Institute for CooIputer Applications in Science and Engineering and NASA Langley Research Center. Kraiciman, McCcxnb, Pouquet and Spiegel represented the category of analytical nDdelling, while Landahl and Saffman represented physical lIDdelling. The contributions of Latmder and Spalding were in the category of phenanenological lIDdelling, and those of Ferziger and Reynolds in the area of nurericalllDdelling. Aref, Cholet, Lumley, Moin, Pope and Temam served on the panel discussions. With the care and cooperation of the participants, the workshop achieved its purpose, and we believe that its proceedings published in this vol\. llre has lasting scientific value. The tone of the workshop was set by two introductory talks by Bushnell and ChaImm. Buslmell presented the engineering viewpoint while Chapman reviewed from a historical perspective developments in the study of turbulence. The remaining talks dealt with specific aspects of the theoretical approaches to fluid turbulence.
Book Synopsis Counterflows by : Vladimir Nikolaevich Shtern
Download or read book Counterflows written by Vladimir Nikolaevich Shtern and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2012-10-15 with total page 485 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses the physical mechanisms that drive counterflows, examining how they emerge, develop, become double and multiple counterflows and comprise both global and local circulations. Counterflows play an important role in nature and technology. A natural example is the Gulf Stream and the opposite flow in the ocean depths. Technological applications include hydrocyclones, vortex tubes and vortex combustors. These elongated counterflows are wildly turbulent but survive intense mixing, a seeming paradox. Local counterflows, whose spatial extent is small compared with that of surrounding flows, occur behind bluff bodies and in swirling streams. The latter are often referred to as vortex breakdown bubbles, which occur in tornadoes and above delta wings. Most scale counterflows are cosmic bipolar jets. Most miniature counterflows occur in capillary menisci of electrosprays and fuel atomisers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Under the auspices of the Euromech Committee, the Fifth European Turbulence Conference was held in Siena on 5-8 July 1994. Following the previous ETC meeting in Lyon (1986), Berlin (1988), Stockholm (1990) and Delft (1992), the Fifth ETC was aimed at providing a review of the fundamental aspects of turbulence from a theoretical, numerical and experimental point of view. In the magnificent town of Siena, more than 250 scientists from all over the world, spent four days discussing new ideas on turbulence. As a research worker in the field of turbulence, I must say that the works presented at the Conference, on which this book is based, covered almost all areas in this field. I also think that this book provides a major opportunity to have a complete overview of the most recent research works. I am extremely grateful to Prof. C. Cercignani, Dr. M. Loffredo, and Prof. R. Piva who, as members of the local organizing committee, share the success of the Conference. I also want to thank Mrs. Liu' Catena, for her invaluable contribution to the work done by the local organizing committee and the European Turbulence Committee in the scientific organization of the meeting. The "Servizio Congressi" of the University of Siena provided perfect organization in Siena and wonderful hospitality. The Conference has been supported by CNR, Cira, Alenia, the Universities of Rome "Tor Vergata" and "La Sapienza".
