Book excerpt: Antarctica's ice shelves, the floating extensions of the ice sheet, exert an important dynamic constraint on the flow of ice from the grounded ice sheet to the ocean, and hence on changes in global sea level. Thinning of an ice shelf reduces its ability to restrain the ice discharge from the grounded ice-sheet interior. Since the grounded ice sheet responds to perturbations in the ice shelves, predicting sea-level rise requires that we understand the processes that determine ice-shelf response to climate variability. Our understanding of these processes is, however, still too rudimentary to allow prediction of ice-sheet change under projected future climate states. This dissertation presents improved procedures to construct 18-year time series (1994-2012) of ice-shelf height around the entire Antarctic continent by merging data from multiple overlapping satellite radar altimeter missions (ERS-1, ERS-2, and Envisat). The resulting data set has a temporal resolution of 3 months and a spatial resolution of ~ 30 km. Improved procedures for trend analysis are introduced, and a more accurate alternative for uncertainty estimation to the standard error propagation approach is proposed. Ice-shelf height variability is analyzed using orthogonal-component decomposition of multivariate time series, spectral estimation and background-noise statistical tests. The derived data set and method allow to estimate, reliably and with defined formal uncertainties, the temporal progression and spatial structure of changes in ice-shelf height and volume in Antarctica between 1994 and 2012. The results reveal that, overall, Antarctic ice-shelf volume loss is accelerating. Furthermore, significant interannual variability in the Amundsen Sea ice shelves is strongly correlated with the low-frequency mode of El Niño-Southern Oscillation. These findings may ultimately allow us to understand the processes driving ice-shelf changes sufficiently to improve our models for predicting future ice loss.

Uncertainties in model projections of Antarctic Ice Sheet mass represent a major contribution to uncertainties in projected sea level rise. Many modelling studies have identified the important role of climate variability in driving ice sheet change; however, there have not been sufficient observational studies on the impact of this variability on the ice sheet. The Antarctic Ice Sheet is vast, and remote; therefore, satellites are the only feasible instruments with which we can measure changes in ice mass. In particular, satellite radar and laser altimeter measurements of changes in ice sheet height are a valuable tool to monitor changes in mass of both grounded ice and floating ice shelves. In this dissertation, we use satellite altimetry together with other ancillary datasets to identify the influences of variability in atmospheric and oceanic conditions on ice sheet mass. We demonstrate of how satellite radar altimetry data can be used to identify the climate drivers ice shelf change during 1994-2016 in the Antarctic Peninsula, a region that has changed rapidly during that period. In the western Antarctic Peninsula, the rates of ocean-driven basal melting exceeded values required to maintain constant mass. Extending this analysis to all Antarctic ice shelves, we find large interannual variability in the total volume flux of freshwater due to basal melting exported into the Southern Ocean, with the highest values occurring during the late 2000s from ice shelves in West Antarctica. Finally, we demonstrate how laser altimetry can be used to monitor large changes in snowfall at seasonal time scales over the grounded portion of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet during the 2019. The results described in this dissertation together highlight the value of satellite altimetry in observing variability in ice sheet mass at seasonal to interannual time scales. We expect that they will help improve model projections of sea level rise through a better understanding of the processes driving ice sheet change, and by providing improved constraints on the current state of the atmosphere-ice-ocean system.

As Earth warms, sea levels are rising mainly because ocean water expands as it warms; and water from melting glaciers and ice sheets is flowing into the ocean. Sea-level rise poses enormous risks to the valuable infrastructure, development, and wetlands that line much of the 1,600 mile shoreline of California, Oregon, and Washington. As those states seek to incorporate projections of sea-level rise into coastal planning, they asked the National Research Council to make independent projections of sea-level rise along their coasts for the years 2030, 2050, and 2100, taking into account regional factors that affect sea level. Sea-Level Rise for the Coasts of California, Oregon, and Washington: Past, Present, and Future explains that sea level along the U.S. west coast is affected by a number of factors. These include: climate patterns such as the El Niño, effects from the melting of modern and ancient ice sheets, and geologic processes, such as plate tectonics. Regional projections for California, Oregon, and Washington show a sharp distinction at Cape Mendocino in northern California. South of that point, sea-level rise is expected to be very close to global projections. However, projections are lower north of Cape Mendocino because the land is being pushed upward as the ocean plate moves under the continental plate along the Cascadia Subduction Zone. However, an earthquake magnitude 8 or larger, which occurs in the region every few hundred to 1,000 years, would cause the land to drop and sea level to suddenly rise.

Although this increasing trend is modest, it is surprising given the overall warming of the global climate and the region. Indeed, climate models, which incorporate our best understanding of the processes affecting the region, generally simulate a decrease in sea ice. Moreover, sea ice in the Arctic has exhibited pronounced declines over the same period, consistent with global climate model simulations. For these reasons, the behavior of Antarctic sea ice has presented a conundrum for global climate change science. The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine held a workshop in January 2016, to bring together scientists with different sets of expertise and perspectives to further explore potential mechanisms driving the evolution of recent Antarctic sea ice variability and to discuss ways to advance understanding of Antarctic sea ice and its relationship to the broader ocean-climate system. This publication summarizes the presentations and discussions from the workshop.

In East Antarctica, the Aurora Subglacial Basin is drained by Totten Glacier and is one of the world’s largest and most rapidly-changing ice catchment systems. In recent decades, Totten Glacier has exhibited variability in its flow rate, mass balance, and ice thickness, each led by changes at the ice sheet margin. Totten Glacier dynamics are linked to processes in the Totten Ice Shelf, which buttresses the flow of grounded ice while being subjected to variable ocean forcing from below. Understanding the stability of the Aurora Subglacial Basin in a changing climate requires an understanding of how Totten Ice Shelf responds to changes in its environment. This dissertation investigates ice shelf processes on spatial scales of 1 km to 100 km, that act on sub-annual to decadal time scales. The independent roles of channelized basal melt and large-scale basal melt resulting from a variable supply of oceanic heat content are examined using surface elevation changes measured by airborne laser altimetry, satellite laser altimetry, and a new method of photometry applied to satellite images. A new method of satellite image template matching is also developed to understand ice shelf velocity response to several environmental forcing mechanisms. On the interannual time scale, Totten Ice Shelf is seen accelerating in response to nearby upwelling of warm circumpolar deep water that enhances basal melt rates. On the subannual time scale, Totten Ice Shelf exhibits winter slowdown as buttressing from seasonal landfast sea ice at the ice shelf front slows the flow of the glacier. These findings show that the Totten Glacier catchment is sensitive to changes in its environment, and may be susceptible to changes in the coastal wind stress projected for the 21st century.

Book excerpt: In this research, we estimated the decadal mass balance of the Antarctic ice sheet using the European Space Agency's ERS-1 and ERS-2 satellite radar altimeter data over the time period of 1992 - 2003. Several techniques are developed to improve the processing and analysis of both low and high resolution elevation change time series. Our research results show that the majority of the East Antarctica interior regions are thickening, and this is probably caused by increased precipitation. Finally, many coastal areas, especially in West Antarctica, are experiencing strongly negative elevation change. These thinning trends are probably due to high heat fluxes, ocean warming, and/or basal melting. The overall estimate of Antarctic elevation change north of 81.6°S corresponds to global sea level increase of 0.07 mm/yr based on the high-resolution interior and coastal results.
