Following the previous ETC meeting in Lyon (1986), Berlin (1988), Stockholm (1990) and Delft (1992), the Fifth ETC was aimed at providing a review of the fundamental aspects of turbulence from a theoretical, numerical and experimental point of view. In the magnificent town of Siena, more than 250 scientists from all over the world, spent four days discussing new ideas on turbulence. As a research worker in the field of turbulence, I must say that the works presented at the Conference, on which this book is based, covered almost all areas in this field. I also think that this book provides a major opportunity to have a complete overview of the most recent research works. I am extremely grateful to Prof. C. Cercignani, Dr. M. Loffredo, and Prof. R. Piva who, as members of the local organizing committee, share the success of the Conference. I also want to thank Mrs. Liu' Catena, for her invaluable contribution to the work done by the local organizing committee and the European Turbulence Committee in the scientific organization of the meeting. The "Servizio Congressi" of the University of Siena provided perfect organization in Siena and wonderful hospitality. Book excerpt: This experiment studied the effect of streamwise vortices on unsteady turbulent boundary-layer separation. The objectives were to document the flow field, to characterize the time response of the boundary layer, and to understand the actual mechanisms by which the streamwise vortices modify boundary-layer behavior. A new configuration for non-obtrusive three-component Laser Doppler Anemometry (LDA) determined the phase averaged velocity and Reynolds stress components, in an unsteady water tunnel, at a momentum thickness Reynolds number of 1840. The streamwise vortices were created by three pairs of half-delta wing vortex generators, while the boundary-layer separation was controlled through impulsively initiated opposite-wall suction, which created a strong adverse pressure gradient. The time response of the freestream velocity demonstrates that convection is the primary mechanism by which vortex generators modify the response of the boundary layer. There is an initial fast response throughout the boundary layer which is unaffected by the presence of vortex generators, followed by a slow or convective response, the magnitude of which is substantially modified by the presence of the vortex generators. Book excerpt: Several experiments have suggested that the streamwise vortices, with their accompanying low momentum streaks, in a turbulent boundary layer have a characteristic spanwise wavelength of approximately lambda (superscript + subscript z) = 100. A mechanism is proposed which selects a comparable spanwise wavelength and produces counterrotating streamwise vortices in a turbulent boundary layer. Examining the equations which describe the small deviation of the velocity field from its time-average, it is found that the Benney-Gustavsson resonance (Studies in Applied Mathematics 3, 1981) occurs with such a boundary layer velocity profile. It is shown that, as an integral part of this resonance, there is a mean secondary flow which has a spanwise wavelength lambda (superscript +, subscript z) = 90 and whose velocities exhibit a counter-rotating streamwise vortex structure.
